It was not long before David, a young steward of ours was diagnosed with Leukemia, a blood disorder. He was warded at our local hospital.
David, after all the treatment he received, knew his chances of surviving was almost zero.
He had lost a tremendous amount of weight and was on the verge of dying. He was given less than 3 months to live. David did not have enough savings to finance his trip to Sydney's St. Vincent Hospital where he had the confidence he would be cured.
On hearing David's plight, SIA cabin crew, collectively donated almost $70,000 to finance his medical bill at St. Vincent.
In less than a year, David recovered from the dreaded diesease and was back at work.
Thanks to the crew,David is still alive today. All his "batch" Leukemia patients at the local hospital did not make it. I understand there was at least 6 of them.
The above episode happened about 12 years ago (I may not be accurate with the years). Our hospitals at that time do not have the technology and medical skills but today it is as good as St. Vincent, so I was told.
Do you know that our cabin crew donate a considerable amount of money to charities every year for the last umpteen years?
Do you know that our crew also spend hundreds of man hours to organise events to help the less fortunate every year?
In all my years with SIA,I have never seen or heard of anyone who asked for assistance, whether it was financial or the crews' time, were turned away.
Our cabin crew has a big heart, always magnanimous and kind to the poor and less fortunate fellow beings.
If you ask me why is our cabin crew such a bunch of compassionate people, I can only think of one possible answer and that is .. ................... (trade secret lah, cannot divulge or else my ex-employer will hantam me again lor...hehee)

Strike Singapore Sweep (lottery)
There was this guy, working at the SIA Training Center canteen who won the Singapore Sweep a few years ago. Lets say his name is Robin. He was a retired worker of SIA and took the canteen job so to help his family.Like most SIA workers,Robin could just managed to make ends meet.
Every month, Robin's wife would buy 20 lottery tickets, hoping to strike it rich.
She had been doing this for the last 20 years or so.
It was on one evening, after arriving home from work,Robin had a good feeling. He asked his wife for the newspaper to check the results of lottery draw.
Robin almost died when he saw the numbers that appeared as the first prize in the newspaper,to be the same as on one of his tickets.
He and his wife turned hysterical. They couldn't contain their joy and were shouting and yelling on top of their voices. Well, when you live in a HDB flat,no one really care whether you shout for help or for joy.The neighbours would usually turn a deaf ear.
A few days later,Robin and his wife went to collect the cheque for the winnings.
It was a cool $1.5 million. Right after that,Robin went to his bank to deposit the cheque. It was a long queue and might take at least half an hour to reach his turn. He would be late for work that afternoon if he had join in the queue. So instead of queuing up,he asked one of the staff at the bank whether she could help him. When Robin presented the cheque to the lady, she was shocked to see the figures on the cheque. In a much unprofessional manner she loudly congratulated Robin for she knew that was the winner's cheque.
Robin felt embarrassed but nevertheless grateful. The manager of the bank invited Robin and his wife to his office and offered them drinks.
Over the next 15 minutes, Robin and his wife left the bank.
A few months later, Robin sold their old HDB flat and bought a new house in Bedok.
I have not been back at STC for the last 2 years but I believe Robin is still working there. Ask any of the stall operators at STC and they will point you to a small old man called Rob..., who is their source of inspiration to the win the 1st prize of the Singapore Sweep Draw, now at $2 million. You don't believe this but there was another ..................ssh..ssshhh....sorry this one is confidential.....hehehe. Wanna win then Click Here

FISHY BUSINESS FROM SOUTH AFRICA.
Leo Yeo was a CCE (cabin crew executive)when he quit from SIA. He and his family of four left for South Africa at about the same time as Sam. But the main reason Leo wanted to be in S.Africa was to be closer to God.He didn't go there because of the cheap cars or houses. He was not against SIA or Singapore when he left. His reason was more noble than that of Sam's.He was a devout Christian whose roots were in S.A.
One day, while Leo was attending to his garden, the phone rang. It was his former trainee, by the name of Jeffrey, a steward with SIA who rang him.
Jeff was very enterprising and still is to these days. He asked Leo to explore for business opportunities in S. Africa. Leo,reluctanly agreed.
It was from his friends in SA that Leo learned about a business franchise which was prospering there. He made some enquiries and informed Jeff.
Jeff, who was still working for SIA then,as a leading steward, took a flight to meet up with Leo and the people from the franchising business.
Before long, Leo and Jeff bought the franchise for the seafood business from SA and set it up in Singapore.
Today, after almost ten years, this seafood business prospered and made these two gentlemen from SIA cabin crew very, very rich.
Last I heard was ,some rich conglomerate offered to buy over the entire business for S$20 million but Leo and Jeff declined.
Without Leo's migration to South Africa, the two ex SIA crew would not be as successful as they are today.
So,there is also a plus for going to a place like S. Africa.
Sam was just unlucky or shall I say 'sway' in Hokkien.

No Thanks South Africa.
Sam, was totally fed up with the way things were run in Singapore. He was a inflight supervisor with SIA. He would often criticised the management and was very unhappy with SIA. Sam was a negative man and it was upsetting to be in his company.
About 12 years ago,Sam packed up and left for South Africa with his wife. He withdrew all his CPF savings and gave up his Singapore citizenship. He vowed never to step foot in Singapore again.
Life was good in South Africa for Sam and his wife. Houses, cars and everything was cheap including lives.
Sam bought a huge house with a big compound for a mere S$80,000. His house was protected by electrical fencing and 2 fierce German shepherds.
It was not long before his wife gave birth to a son. They rejoiced because having been married for umpteen years, they could not have any children.
A few years after they had settled down, South Africa was returned to the Blacks. Nelson Mandela became the president.
Over the next couple of years things got worse in South Africa. There were more crimes and unemployment.
Daylight robberies were a daily occurrence. Murders were no strangers.
Sam was trading in gold, yes physical gold bars, albeit,on a small scale. He armed himself with 2 fully loaded revolvers when he traveled to the banks or anywhere in the country.Sam was a careful man but did not have friends because of his thrifty nature. There was at that time, a small community of ex SIA crew but Sam did not mix around with them.
One night, Sam and his family was woken up by a gang of black robbers. They had guns with them and they forced Sam to open his safe.In it,were gold bars with the value of S$70,ooo.They took all the gold bars plus whatever cash and jewelries Sam and his family had. At first, Sam resisted but was hit in the head by the robbers until he was almost dead.
The robbers wanted to kidnap their 9 year old son but relented after both Sam and his wife begged them not to.
It was a quick, well executed job and within minutes the robbers, five of them, left in their two stolen Mercedeses.
Heartbrokened and filled with fear, the family decided to return to Singapore.
Sam's wife was still a Singapore citizen but not him and his son. They applied for PR status but was turned down by the Singapore Immigration. However, their son, could live in Singapore with his mother, until a certain age whereby he could undergo national service and become a Singapore citizen.
As for Sam, he could not even get his PR. and he stayed here with his wife and son, under a social pass category.

Pilot in the Toilet with...........
Ray would in 6 months time be promoted to the rank of a SIA captain. He would then be earning around S$12,000 per month including all the extra allowances.
He was a senior first officer on the B747 fleet.Ray was a pilot with an attractive personality. He was always charming but to the girls and the prettier ones only.He was the kind, the crew would brand as"chee hong" ( "pussy crazy"). The stewards loathe him.
Ray had a stewardess wife called Jess. She had left SIA to take care of the family. They had a little boy of 2 years.
When Jess was flying,Ray did not have the freedom to be a 'Romeo'. Jess was fiercely jealous of the other girls whose names Ray so often called in his sleep. After each flight, Jess would check for tell tale signs that could lead to the confirmation of her suspicion that her husband had slept with the other stewardesses. Many times, they quarrelled because of her suspicion.
On one flight back to Singapore from Europe, one set of cockpit and cabin crew 'passenger' back in civis.
On this flight, the crew was allowed to drink alcohol ( they were off duty and not wearing uniform). The cockpit crew sat in the first class cabin while the cabin crew travelled in the economy.Ray, as usual, would spend most of his time in the economy class and you could guess why.
Devi, a gorgeous SIA Indian stewardess was part of the 'passengering' cabin crew. She was also travelling as a passenger.
Throughout the flight, Ray and Devi would drink and behaved intimately with each other, oblivious to the other colleagues and passengers around them.
When Ray and Devi couldn't 'take' it anymore, they both slipped into one of the toilets in the quiet of the night.
The noises from the toilet alerted the operating crew and supervisor Lim was informed.Well, this was the opportunity for Lim to get even with Ray who had been arrogant with him on one flight.
Lim, with two other male crew as witnesses, without any warning, opened the toilet door from the exterior.
Devi and Ray were caught literally with their pants down. They were both pissed and had rough sex in the little cubicle toilet.
The commander of the flight was informed of the misbehavior by Lim and a report was lodged.
Subsequently, a few months down the road and after a disciplinary inquiry, the two crew were dismissed from SIA.
At home, Ray and Jess fought so often over the incidence that they ended up in a divorce.
The last I heard of Ray was,he became a taxi driver. Devi broke up with her steward boyfriend and became a social escort with a local company.

The Hijacking of SQ117!
The leader of the hijacking group took a liking to SIA stewardess Nora. To him, Nora looked and reminded him of his sister. There were times, during the 9 hours of the hijack ordeal that the leader had to deal with his own comrades regarding Nora. One of the hijackers was almost beaten up by the leader when he tried to get "fresh" with Nora.
It was mistake number one for the hijackers to be so distracted and disunited because of one stewardess. I supposed the hijackers were under tremendous pressure and this could have led them to behave irrationally. They even poured alcohol along the ailse and threatened to blow the aircraft.
Mistake number two was when the terrorists threw the two stewards out of the aircraft. These two stewards provided vital information to the authorities regarding the terrorists.
When the commandos killed the 4 hijackers, Nora broke down and cried over the body of the leader. Nora had developed the so called Stockholm syndrome.
I don't think anyone outside of the crew ( selected ones) and the higher management of SIA knew much about the hidden wireless mini microphones that were installed at designated doors of the aircrafts. In a situation like this, the trained cabin crew would whenever convenient, speak into these microphones and relay information about the hijackers to the authorities. We dubbed this action as "saying prayers".
Certain toilets were equipped with tiny plastic like bottles and waterproofed paper. In a situation like this,if the crew had the opportunity to use these toilets, they were trained to write in code form all the information they were able to gather regarding the hijackers eg. how many of them, the nationalities, the colour of their clothing, who was the leader and so forth. The crew would then slipped the information into the little bottles and flush them down. Afterward, when the toilets were overused, the ground staff would empty the toilet bowls by using a suction and the bottles were retrieved for the messages.
SIA was well prepared for any eventualities especially a hijacking back then.I think SIA had discontinued the abovementioned practices. They would, by now have newer and more innovative ways to beat any attempts to cause mischief or havocs on their aircrafts. Do you know that the hijackers did not even have a pistol let alone explosives? They wielded SIA cultery knives and threatened to kill the passengers with these blunt so called weapons. If the hijackers had real explosives and guns, it would not have been that easy for our commandos to kill all the four of them in thirty seconds without causing injuries and death among the passengers.
In conclusion, the hijackers were a bunch of amateurs, bickering over a stewardess, throwing out the two stewards, and trying to bluff the whole world with their faked guns and explosives.

Request for More Entertaining Stories.
A few of my readers had asked me to relate more entertaining stories rather than the ones, I am currently embarking on. Violence related stories are not their cup of tea, they wrote to me. So, I have decided to accede to their requests, at least for now.Below is one of stories I am able to recall right now and I would like to relate it.
The voice of the captain, over the PA, brought gloom to the cabin. He announced there was some problem he was having with the aircraft nose wheels. They couldn't be extended for the landing at Singapore Paya Lebar Airport.Control tower was informed and emergency procedures were reviewed for the oncoming crash landing.
When one looked out of the aircraft windows, one was able to see the thick foam spread over the runway,as though waiting patiently to embrace the Boeing 707.
There was a bit of panic in the cabin as the B707 was dumping its fuel to lighten the load for the crash landing.
Suddenly, in the economy class cabin, an electrifying scream of a lady, pierced through the eerie silence of the graveyard-liked cabin. It was the scream of an uncontrollable stewardess, Irene, who was overwhelmed with fear and panic.
The crew tried consoling her but she was hysterical. This had somewhat caused more panic amongst the already frightened passengers.
The senior steward Roland, went up to Irene and in the presence of the passengers in the cabin, slapped her with a force that could have dislodge the nose wheels, shut her up instantly. Moments later,Irene fainted and remained silent for the rest of the ordeal.
Captain Gurum was an ace pilot in his early thirties. He was calm and a brave man. The co-pilot was Peter Menon. I cannot recall the expatriate flight engineer's name but he was less competent than the 2 pilots. He couldn't crank the nose wheels down and was visibly nervous.
After dumping almost all of 707's fuel, Capt. Gurum informed control that he
would nosedived the 707 and then jack it up into the sky with the speed of lightning and let gravity performed it task.
After obtaining clearance from control tower, Captain Gurum and his crew executed the plan. In less than 20 seconds(I may be incorrect here as to the timing), the Boeing 707 enxtended its stubborn wheels.
There was relief all round. Passengers and crew applauded loudly even before Captain Gurum came on the PA.
In the next couple of minutes, the plane landed safely much to the relief of everybody, including Irene. This incidence happened in 1969.
About 30 years later,Captain Gurum passed away after a long illness.
Senior first officer Peter Menon and Roland have since retired. As for Irene, no one knows of her whereabouts.

Cute Puppy for Adoption ( Free)
My neighbor has a puppy he's giving away (FREE!).
It's a Dachshund, it's toilet trained, and it's great with kids.
He's giving it away because his wife says the dog 'stares' at her when
she is undressing, and that gives her the 'Heebie Jeebies'. I think she
is just weird !
If you're interested, or know someone who is, let me know.

MM Lee and Mrs. Lee, our gracious passengers.
I got up this morning around 6 am.,thinking what would my readers like to know. I still have a lot more stories to relate, after all, 35 years of flying is a long time, almost a generation.
Then, as I was lying on my bed,the memories of mine as well as my crews' encounters with MM Lee came to my mind.
I am not political but I do know one thing, like many older Singaporeans, that without MM Lee, many of us,our children and grandchildren would still be living in squatters without proper sanitations, electricity or clean running water. For, this I salute the great man Mr. Lee Kuan Yew! It is better to give him a bouquet now than when he is gone.
It was way back in the 1970s and 1980s when MM used to travel much more than these days and in the capacity of the Prime Minister of Singapore that we were privileged to have served him and his lovely wife.
It was an unwritten SIA policy that whenever MM flew with us, we would discourage the other first class passengers from smoking. We were told he had sinus problem.
On one flight,I politely told an American first class passenger to refrain from smoking too much(he was a chain smoker) and he graciously complied with my request. I think MM must have overheard my conversation with this American gentleman. Later on, MM pulled me aside and discreetly rebuked me. He explained to me that passenger had a right to smoke and I should not have asked him to stop.
My colleague ,once locked a first class cabin toilet for MM but was also nicely told not to ever do that again. MM's contention was , all first class revenue passengers have the right to the same facilities and he was no exception.
Whenever we could not complied with MM's request for things that were supposed to be on board, we would turn to Mrs Lee for rescue. She would then softly shout across the aisle to MM and told him not to bother the crew. MM would nod his head and smiled at the crew.
MM knew the type of pressure the company would put on the crew whenever he was on board, would occasionally reassured the crew not worry too much of his presence. Mrs. Lee was even better, always coming to our rescue whenever there was a shortfall in our service.
There was always so much fuss whenever MM flew with us. Security would be tight, the aircraft cabin and toilets would be in pristine condition, crew serving MM would be briefed before the flight on MM's likes and dislikes, his specially catered food and not to chilled his beer.
The good thing for the crew was,MM did not usually eat the food specially catered for him. He once told me and my crew to serve him and Mrs.Lee the food on the menu that the other first class passengers ate. He even told us to have his specially catered food and to us, they always tasted better than those on the first class menu.
To us, the cabin crew in SIA, it was such an honour to serve MM and his wife. For some of us senior crew, we were never worried or under pressure to serve this honourable couple. When things did not go right, we would just explained to Mrs. Lee and she would turn around and looked at her husband and said " Harry don't you..................." and everything would be alright.

Must Study Hard or Else........
One of our readers, left me a comment a while ago. I was corrected because I spelt "complaint" as compliant. I told him/her "my england is not so powderful leh" I never study hard when I was in school ,thats why I became a steward lor...and that reminds me of a story.....loonng before your time......( sounds like Tan Ah Teck or Moses Lim in "Under One Roof" right?)
On a night flight to Brisbane, a Singaporean lady passenger pointed to the tired looking stewardess who was struggling to serve a full load of passengers dinner, and told her 5 year old daughter..." better study hard or else become like this aunty and have to work so hard ."
If I ever lived again, I will "study very hard" or else if I am "...not good enough, life would kick "me" in my balls" and be told to "get out of "her" elite uncaring face". Hehehe, have a bery nice day!

Stewards' Occupational Hazards
SIA has this "married couple" scheme ,whereby husband and wife cabin crew are rostered together for the same flight. In this manner, SIA is able to save hotel bills as a couple is given 1 hotel room during their stay overseas.
At one of the European stations, there was a set of cabin crew on standby duty.
Janet and Bill were the husband and wife crew and was on standby duty. Around noon of that day, Bill was called up from standby to operate a flight. He would be away on the flight and be back at the hotel by midnight. His wife Janet was not called up for flight, so she would remained in the hotel, still on standby duty till 10pm that night.
When Bill arrived at the airport, he was told that he was not required to operate the flight due to some last minute changes.
Bill was sent back to his hotel by an SIA mini bus. Bill did not want to call his wife as he wanted to surprise her. He looked at his watch and it read 5.35pm and was thinking of having dinner in an hours' time with Janet.
From the hotel lobby, Bill took the elevator to the 11 floor.
As soon as Bill reached room 1135, he took out his hotel room key and slowly opened the door.
Janet was not in the room and Bill noticed that their bed was in an absolute mess. He heard noises coming from the bathroom and someone, whose voice sounded so familiar was quivering in ecstasy.
Suddenly, reality struck Bill. It was Janet in the bath with a fellow steward called Nick. The naked couple were shocked to see Bill standing right over them. In a flash, Nick ran out of the bath and hurriedly put on his bath robe.
There was a fight between the 2 men with Janet screaming and crying.
Things were thrown around and mirrors, shelves and almost everything that belonged to the hotel were smashed.
Hotel security was called in and the 2 stewards were apprehended. There was a big commotion on the 11 th floor. It was the talk of the hotel that night and many nights to come.
At the disciplinary inquiry back home , both Bill and Nick were let off with a stern warning from the management, after they agreed to pay the hotel a sum of S$5,000 for the damages.
Not long after, Bill and Janet were divorced and Nick left the airlines.

Happy Halloween Day?
Halloween, brought back some bitter memories for some of the Singapore Airlines cabin crew. They were in Las Vegas during their nightstop (SIA has stopped flying to Vegas) and they squandered US$10,000 between the 4 of the boys and girls at the Blackjack tables. Guess what? these guys used their credit cards to obtain cash from the casinos cages. Poor guys!
