Air steward made fun of a serious situation
27 Feb. Online Forum, Straits Times.
I was on SQ231 bound for Sydney on Feb 24. Upon take-off, the baggage compartment above my seat started leaking. Droplets of water started dripping down directly onto my forehead.
I signalled for the air steward on duty to assist me with the problem. However, my request was met with disdain.
The air steward cheekily told me that I had two options. The first was he could provide me with an umbrella and the second was he could provide me with a raincoat. I am not sure what his intention was in giving me this response as I did not find my situation then funny.
I asked him again to be serious and requested him to do something about the leak. I added that should he fail to provide a solution, the least he could do was to provide me with a free upgrade. His response was that he will accept credit card or cash upfront.
I am very disappointed with the service that SIA has provided me with for my trip to Sydney. The air steward that I approached was not serious in his service.
Instead of addressing my situation immediately, he preferred to create a joke out of my plight. Although after a repeated request, he decided to use a piece of tissue paper to stop the leak, I found it preposterous that he displayed such behaviour unbecoming of an air steward.
If Singapore Airlines want to maintain its world-class standards, such behaviour from its cabin crew cannot be tolerated. I failed to notice the name of the air steward but he was serving the first few rows of Economy Class.
I hope Singapore Airlines will look into this matter as I believe such behaviour from the cabin crew will seriously undermine Singapore Airlines' effort to be the number one carrier in the industry. For other online letters click here

Interesting Observations.
The Disabled Passenger.
If you were to hear this story, you wouldn't know whether to laugh it off at the stupidity of the crew or get mad with them.
On a flight, there was a disabled passenger who couldn't walked .He was wheelchair bound. So he needed assistance to visit the toilet.
In the middle of the meal service, this disabled pax wanted to visit the toilet for a pee. He asked the stewardess who in turn asked the leading steward. It was a difficult time for the crew as the meal service was going on half way and the meal carts had jammed up the aisle. For those of you who had flown before, you would notice that during the meal service it would be difficult for you to squeeze through the aisle to visit the loo,let alone a disable pax who needed assistance.
The leading steward,in jest, told the stewardess to give the disabled pax an airsickness bag to pee in it.
The "instruction" was carried out to the letter. You can imagine how pissed off that pax was.
A complaint went up to the airline top management and actions were taken against the two crew.

SIA and Emirates Cabin Crew Vacancies.
SIA and Emirates Cabin Crew and Singapore Hotel vacancies click here.
It depends on who runs the show.
In cabin crew division, like in other places,it all depends on who the head was. If you got an incompetent donkey to run the company or whatever, then you would have a bunch of asses working for you.
Look ,when Eddie J. was the SVPCC, cabin crew division was a better place to work. Eddie helped a colleague of ours to stave off brankrupcy (although that guy was made a bankrupt later on) whereas his successor sacked that colleague.
There was no consistency and his successor lacked the "milk of human kindness",to quote Shakespeare whereas Eddie had a heart of "gold".
Yap Kim Wah was brought in from Cargo to Cabin Crew side when our crews' morale was low and Yap succeeded in turning cabin crew division around with thousands of letters of compliments from our passengers, in the 1980s.
We are always thinking in the interest of SIA or else this point would not even be worthwhile mentioning in this blog.
SIA is a good company to work for and most of us had spent more than half of our life time, working for it.
To turn the declining standard of service around,I would suggest re-opening up the position of the CCE (C/T)(retitle it if you want to save some face). There is no need to re-employ old people like us. Get new ones, maybe the young grads. to work as cabin crew for a few years and then promote them. What I am saying here is,there must be a distinction between the crew and the CCEs. Using the IFS to replace the CCE(CT) is a grave mistake and the reasons are obvious.
We are concerned at the way the service standard is spiralling downwards.
If anyone think that this blog's intention is to discredit my beloved ex-employer and has very valid points, I will shut down this blog.
May SIA be the Number One airline again is our prayer!

Air stewardess: secrets of my five-mile high sex romp with Ralph Fiennes
Qantas Air stewardess had sex with Ralph Fiennes, the Hollywood actor, in the aircraft toilet. She faces the sack. Click for full story.
My Big Boss...a smart Alec!
The postion of the cabin crew executives (training/check) was made redundant by our previous big boss who in the end was kicked out of SIA by his bigger bosses. We called it 'retribution'.
This one of a capital "B" was so insecured with the CCEs around that he decided in the "best interest of SIA", to get rid of them. I, for one do not really know whether it was insecurity or hatred for the CCEs that made that ass executed his plan.
This ass then joined some unknown "no value airlines" and made a mess of it and left before that airline's demise.
If one were to look at the statistics, one would realised the standard of inflight service on SIA had slipped far down the ladder.
According to Skytrax world rankings in past three years, SIA service had fell from 1st to 4th and 7th in the last 3 years.
Ncver before had SIA done so badly. Why? It was because SIA had the CCEs then to teach and impart their hundreds of combined years of experience to the crew.
Do you know that the CCEs were know as the "Black Ninjas" by their subordinates?
A Black Ninja was the creme ala creme of the Samurai in Japan. The CCEs were the Black Ninjas of the inflight service and without them, how could the service be maintained let alone improved.
I, personally feel sorry for the receipients of the current inflight service.
Well, like the saying goes,"All good things must come to an end", and so must SIA inflight service.

My ex-Boss, a Gay.
My ex-boss was a gay. However, he never admitted that he was a gay. We don't know what were his reasons. He always talked about his masculinity when the whole of cabin crew knew he was a gay. This type of gay is know as "closet gay".
He was a good boss,no doubt. Lets call him Des (not his real name). Des was much younger than most of us. He was a graduate and joined SIA as a young management cadet and in a short time, was promoted to manager and then to VP.
Des was never a crew, like most of the older managers in cabin crew would be. However,Des was a smart fellow who could empathise with the crew.He was a jovial and lively character. With Des around, the whole office would be livened up.He didn't act like a boss at all and mingled with the office staff like as though he was one of them.
One day,he pulled a few of us aside and told us that his mom wanted him to get married and raised a family( he was of the impression that we didn't know he was a gay).He asked us how was married life like and we told him this and that and all the crap. After a while, came another weird question from him. He asked us, when we masturbate, how far can we 'shoot' ( as though we did at this age). In order to 'humour' him, some of us told him we could 'shoot' mosquitoes. With pride in his eyes, he told us when he lied down horizontally, 'his' could defy gravity and shot lizards (on the ceiling). We,then burst out into laughter, not because we believed his story but because it sounded ridiculous.
Sometimes,he would flex his biceps and showed us the result of his weight lifting exercise.
To tell the truth,he was a small little guy who was no taller than 1.6m and weighed about 55kg.
This was one funny boss that I had worked for.

Removal of my article.
Some of the regular visitors here may wonder why my posting of "The $140,000 Stewardess" a few months back had disappeared.
I have decided to remove the said posting because that particular stewardess had recently passed away. I understand she died of a heart attack at her home. She was in her early fifties with no kids and divorced.
May she RIP.

Too Old To Be A SIA Girl?
There are girls out there in their late 20s and early 30s who think they do not stand a chance in being recruited as a flight stewardess with SIA should read the following, which I quote from a forum. The person who answered the questioned must be an ex SIA girl herself.

hi, yup, my friend's cousin is 40 years old now. because she look young, doesn't look like 40 years old at all, she look like in her early 30s. maybe that why's she can still fly. but she is going to retire soon because she has a family to take care of. and as for keisha questions. the age limit that SIA and silkair stated in their recruitment: age 25, they are for the foreign crew.
foreign stewardesses need to be 25 and below. but for local stewardesses , the age is up to 29 years old. unless they decided to change their age limit for the current intake,
i am pretty sure local stewardess age limit is 29 years old. if not, you can email them and ask them the age limit since they do not put the age limit out in their local stewardess recruitment. i know people who are being recruited as stewardess, age, 26, 27 and 28. so for those who are out there who are age 26-29, no harm trying. all the best!

Operating crew (stewardesses)
The Japanese Fss attracted the least complaints from passengers (% wised) compared to other nationalities. They also took the least medical leave.
Medical leave were put into different categories by SIA cabin crew management.
There were the 'casual medical leave', and the 'non-casual medical leave' types. Certain infectious sicknesses eg. dengue fever, mumps, chicken pox etc were considered as non-casual as well as sicknesses requiring hospitalisation.
The casual MCs.(short for medical leave)were those taken for flu, headache, stomach cramps due to menstruation, vertigo etc.
The crew would be given demerit points for acquiring too many of the casual MCs and would lose out in their promotion chances,non-renewal of work contracts etc.
Coming back to the nationalities of FSSs, who took the most casual MCs in term of percentages and order ,were the Singaporeans, Malaysians, Indians,Chinese, Indonesians,Taiwanese,Koreans and the Japanese.
Today, the order may have changed a little but it would still be the Japanese who would take the least MCs.
As for complaints received, the Chinese FSSs received the most and then next were the Singaporeans,Malaysians, Indians,Taiwanese,Koreans,Indonesians and the Japanese.
The above statistics may differ from what I knew when I was still with the company. Well, I am sure I will receive comments or latest update from the crew soon, as a result of this posting. Please note, I welcome all constructive comments.

Japanese Girls Make The Best SIA Girl.
The following article, like all others here, are my personal views. They may not necessarily reflect that of Singapore Airlines (SIA) nor of anyone, not even my ex-colleagues.
As trainees and flight stewardesses/attendants in SIA, the Japanese were the best. They treasured their flying jobs and being a SIA Girl or for that matter, any airline stewardess, brought together a lot of pride and glory to the family. In Japan, an airline stewardess commanded a social status as high as that of a medical doctor,I was told.
Only the best were considered suitable for the stewarding job, besides acting and TV news casting.
The Japanese trainees were not proficient in English. However, they would work hard at it during the 4 months of training stint in Singapore. All of them would bring into the classrooms, dual language dictionaries ( Japanese to English vv ).
I had taken Japanese girl classes and most, if not all, passed their exams with flying colours. Their weakest in the class could easily beat the best in our local classes eg. lowest score for Japanese 91% and the best for local 90%
Discipline wise, they were also better. Some of the classes I took, would not even leave the classroom after I had dismissed them, at the end of the day, until I leave first.
As for the local and other nationalities, they would already be busy packing their notes, manuals etc. long before dismissal time.
In my next posting,I would talk about them as serving or operating crew.

Mixed Class of Trainees.
It was more challenging to take mixed classes of male and female trainees. Somehow, the guys would end up giving the trainers more headaches. They would kind of like to "show off " to their female colleagues and in the process misbehaved themselves.
There were cases of guys refusing to obey simple instructions from their instructors and challenging them instead.
Ultimately, these types of trainees were sacked. SIA do not want to keep this type of employees, who insubordinate themselves in these early stages of their career.
These were mostly guys from Malaysia. Their average age as trainees would be around 20.
Male trainees from Singapore fared much better. Their average age would be about 25,after completing their compulsory National Service.
The Malaysian boys did not do any National Service.
So it was assumed that the stint in the army or any disciplined force did some good to the guys. Naturally, age played a part too, as the Singaporeans guys were older than their Malaysian colleagues.
When it came to the female trainees, it was the other way round.
Malaysian girls behaved better,in terms of performance and discipline.
They were generally more unassuming and conscientious than their Singaporean colleagues. I would say that the Malaysians were more "hungry"and in Hokkien, we would say more "chai see".
Singaporean girls were more pampered and spoilt at home by their parents.
However, towards the last 10 years of the 20th century, the Malaysian girls were generally just as bad. Reasons?.....Malaysians were also getting more affluent and less "hungry" or eager to work hard.
Forget about the China girls or the Taiwanese. They were just as bad.
Indian girls?....they were worst. Indonesian ? .. no better.
The best were the Japanese trainees.
So, from their profiles, you could see how challenging it was for us, as trainers, to mould these trainees in their early stages to become the best cabin crew in the world.

Female trainees' infatuation with their male instructors.
Many a time we would hear of female trainees falling head over heels in love with their male instructors. I called it infatuation or puppy's love.
The age gap between the trainer and the female trainee would be around 10 years. It wasn't a big age gap compared to the time when I left.
The period just before I left the airline, the average age gap between a trainer and his female trainee was about 30 years. Old enough to be her father. So these days you don't hear trainees falling in love or infatuated with their trainers.
In my early years as an instructor to the young girls,I had gone through that experience of trainees getting infatuated with me. I had to counsel them because some of these girls openly expressed their feelings.
Of course, there were also rogue trainers among us who exploited the situation.
One of my own colleagues even made his trainee pregnant. How many of such cases I could not really tell because things were being hushed up or swept under the carpet.
For most of us trainers, we lived by our professional ethics. We did not "dirty our own backyards". As one of my joker ex-colleagues put it " we plucked the best durains
and someone else eat them".
There was one girl in my class who was openly infatuated with me. She would leave little notes on my desk during my absence, telling me how she felt towards me.It was a opened secret because everyone in the class knew about it.
Another one was about a trainee who always asked me for private lessons because she said could "not cope".
Yet another one told me about her past love affairs with married men and how she enjoyed her time with them. It was a big hint for me to make a move.
Yes, admittedly there were many more cases.
Temptation was great but we had to remain strong because we simply couldn't exploit the situation and take full advantage of these young and innocent girls.
I always told them that one of these days when they grew up a little, they would felt embarrassed when we met.
Well, some of them after flying for a while and on meeting me, would confessed that it "was a silly school girl fantasy" to be so called in love with me. We would then laugh it off as matured man and woman.

Well, some of them after flying for a while and on meeting me, would confessed that it "was a silly school girl fantasy" to be so called in love with me. We would then laugh it off as matured man and woman.

Graduated and Flying Solo.
After their sny flts., the girl were off flying with the regular crew.Of course, they struggled a little because of the new environment and work.
They were slow in almost all aspects of their work. Nervous and anxious on the first few flts. were only natural for these girls.
After about 3 to 6 months, they should be able to cope quite well.
The trainers would have less calls for help from these ex-trainees.
Oh yes, for the first few months of their career, they looked up to their trainers for help, comfort and advice......but most of them would have had the memories of their trainers erased by the first year of flying.
Well thats in the nature of things...."out of sight is out of mind".
Before that, especially just after training, some of them would even shed tears for having to leave behind their "beloved" instructors.

SNY ( observation) flights.
After passing their Conversion course and SEP (safety, equipment procedures),the girls went on their sny flights.
SNY is supernumerary or in layman's term, observation flights. The trainees were rostered, 2 or 3 of them together at a time and flew the same flight.
There was a lot of excitement when I distributed the sny rosters to the girls.
They were excited for various reasons, one of them was the stations they were going to nightstop. The other reason was,the colleagues (same batch girls)with whom they were doing the sny flights with. Third reason was the learning process itself on the flights.
They were also anxious as to whom ( the operating crew)they would be flying with. Anxious because..would they be flying with bitchy and nasty senior crew or nice and helpful ones? Quite naturally, the former were the likely ones.
Sometimes,I pity these sny girls. They would get "zapped" by their senior crew and sometimes ridiculed too.
I had always taught them how to survive in such a situation. " Always know your work and be pleasant and nice to these senior crew....,introduce yourselves to them when you meet them before the briefing session start....and don't forget the smiles..."
In spite of following the above advice, some of the girls still get zapped and bullied.Certain senior crews were just sadistic and mean to the trainees.
We would deal with those senior mean crew if they go beyond a certain limit.
We had reports of sny girls being shouted at and in extreme cases, slapped by and abused by their seniors.
Throughout my twenty plus years as a trainer, I noticed that when it comes to bullying and ill treating of the sny crew, it is a vicious cycle.
The snys who got the bad treatment would in all probabilities bully other snys when they became senior and this phenomenon goes on and on.
Its somewhat the same as in the army,I was told, except that it is more physical there as compared to the airline.
So it was the senior crew who created most of the unnecessary worries for the snys. Passengers,on the other hand, was not a problem to the snys.

FUNNY AND INTERESTING AIRLINE ANNOUNCEMENTS.
"Weather at our destination is 50 degrees with some broken clouds, but they'll try to have them fixed before we arrive. Thank you, and remember, nobody loves you, or your money, more than Southwest Airlines."
And, after landing: "Thank you for flying Delta Business Express. We hope you enjoyed giving us the business as much as we enjoyed taking you for a ride."
"Smoking in the lavatories is prohibited. Any person caught smoking in the lavatories will be asked to leave the plane immediately."
"our inflight sales items are perfumes, kiddy toys and spiritual drinks....."

SIA to learn from Crazy Horse?
There is an article contributed by Ms Chua in the Straits Times today pertaining to, once again, the much talked about subject of the SIA Girl.
She argued that SIA has to be careful not to go the way Crazy Horse did in Singapore.
In not so many words, Ms Chua is saying that SIA is sexist, using the femmine charm to lure its customers.
One of my blogger friends agreed with her and in his blog, Kthinking ,he posed this question,"..Why Singapore Airlines is so sexist? I noticed 90% of the time the crew chief is usually a man in his 50s. With such a huge population of female stewardess, why only men reach the top of the crew...."?
This blogger friend of mine is one of the top men of Fortune 500 responsible for Asia. He is also a PPS passenger with SIA.
We can argue till the cows come home but in the final analysis SIA, with one of the best management people in the world would decide the fate of the airlines.

Hi BT!
Yahoo connection stinks hence the delay in posting!
Wah liau! I tot only MH had stories like these. . .but this one is a classic.
To lighten up a bit, I will share with you one about MH . . .
Heard of the 'Panadol' Man? Well, there is this IFS (Inflight Supervisor) in MH, and he use to 'try' on all the new crew. There was a lul in intake at one time, so he tried this trick on the FSS's! He would call up pretending to have a headache, and would normally ask for some 'Panadol'. As soon as the victim opens the door, he would invite himself in and try his tricks from A-z....
Hence the name 'Panadol' Man stuck to him!
Fancy that eh?....Next.....The Laundry Man!

Conversion Course ( A310/B747) Aircraft Visit.
Aircraft visit was a day of bringing the trainees to the airport and spending most of our time in the cabin of planes that were parked there.
This part of the program came in when the trainees had completed the sections on cabin, toilet and galley layouts.
All of us looked forward to the visit. To me, it was away from the routine work at the office or training center and for the girls, the airport and the real planes were a fresh and welcome change from the classroom.
We met early in the morning at the airport and exchanged our passes for the visitors' passes to enter the airport departure/arrival areas.
As a trainer, I did not have to change my pass as it was a pass for most restricted areas.
The trainees were told the day before the visit ,to put on the best behaviour and observed proper dress code.
The real excitement came when we enter the aircraft cabin. The girls were shown the real galleys, cabin, toilets gadgets, the electrical panels, the light switches and so on which they had learned from the manuals and mockups.
Sometimes, the trainees would get carried away and talked too loudly amid the excitement. This was where I had to come in and reminded them they were stewardesses to be and should not display such emotions publicly.
We spent the whole morning going from one airplane to another.
After a few hours of waiting and visiting the a/c interior, I then brought the girls for a tour of the airport areas.
By about 1 pm the class was dismissed and proceeded for lunch or home.
It was an uneventful day for me but for the girls it was a fun day of practical learning.

Conversion Course ( A310/B747)
After passing their Basic Course exams, the girls then proceeded to do the Conversion Course with me.They were to learn the A310 and B747 aircraft galleys, cabin and toilet layout as well as the switches for ovens, cabin lighting, aircraft and passenger configuration. Also included in the lessons were meal and drink service, ground preparation, boarding and seating of passengers etc.As a trainer, I had to prepare these girls and equip them with all the necessary knowledge and skills to pamper and look after the well being of our passengers. These tasks were challenging to the girls as well as myself, since this was my first batch of trainees. The girls learned through stand-up lectures, role plays, drink and meal service simulations which we termed as "wet run" etc.We did not have computers back then unlike these days, the trainees learn through "CBT" or computer based training.Nowadays, there is less interaction between the trainees and their trainers. Another setback is they do not have the expertise of the cabin crew executive. Instead, they were taught by senior operating crew who knew very little about training. It is a sad thing for the trainees because they are not given the best training.During those days, the trainees got the best training. The CCEs were professional trainers and were the best, expertise and conduct-wise.
