Praise those who are still around and not after they are gone.

Sad really that our good friend Cyril has gone. He was a nice jolly good fellow who was ....ahhhh no point praising a guy who has already gone...should have praise him when he was alive. Let's learn a lesson here that we should praise people who are still around and not the other way round, right?
Lets look at those who are around and worthy of our praises. Can't think of anyone at the moment except myself ....hehehe...hey what about that guy ah...??

One by one we knock off.

The demise of Cyril Teo, my former boss and manager of cabin crew sets me thinking more about the meaning of my existence.
Cyril was indeed a kind man who was well respected as a friend and a boss. He was unlike some bosses who treat their subordinates like dirt. He was humble and friendly to all yet firm in decision makings as a manager. He loved his Scotch whisky and Marlboro cigarettes. He had time for anybody who wanted a listening ear. Cyril was patient and a damn good listener. To me, he was the best trainer in cabin crew and under his tutelage I learned a lot. He was a brave man,did not complain much about the pain he endured from that dreadful cancer. He lived a courageous life and died a brave man.
Then there was another colleague called Vincent Lo who died of cancer a year ago. He lived life to the fullest and was a jovial fellow even unto death. I believe Cyril and Vincent were aged 66 when they died. Both had been heavy drinkers and smokers although Vincent gave up smoking 7 years ago before he succumbed to cancer.
Inflight supervisor Mahendran had died of a heart attack 2 years ago while the good looking David Chan and Kenneth Chan died of cancer in their in their 50s.
Looks like one by one we are fading from the scene. But then who really cares, right? SIA cabin crew would still function with or without us. But one thing SIA has to remember is that who helped to make cabin crew division what it is today. As a token of good gesture and appreciation, it should at least insert a farewell note in Straits Times and acknowledges the contribution of those warriors like Cyril and Vincent.
However, when it is my time to go,be rest assured I would not get accolades but relief from the people whom I have crossed swords with. But I don't care because after I am gone I won't know the difference between flowers put on my grave and the curses and swearing bestow on me.
A week ago, I saw our ex managing director Lim Chin Beng and his wife along Orchard Road. They were strolling around and window shopping,I noticed. Chin Beng was one of the best CEO SQ staff ever had. He was a good listener to the staff's problem and an understanding boss. Many in SQ loved him. His wife was not as friendly as him but she was actually a nice lady.
I still am able to vividly remember Captain Segar, SQ's first cabin crew director (now retitled as SVP). He passed away some years ago in Scotland. We were fond of him as he was a easy going type of divisional head. It was fun to have him as our director. I remember on one occasion when we wanted to watch the live boxing match between Mohd. Ali and Sonny Liston,Capt Segar allowed us to stop work and installed a TV set in one of the classrooms and watch the whole match. He was not the kiasu type of boss. In fact,he occasionally bought 4 D from a bookie whom we recommended. He smoked and drank with us and enjoyed our company. We missed him.
Then there was hmmmmm.....never ending lah.

Goodbye Cyril my buddy.

Cyril Teo has passed away peacefully on 25 March and the annoucement is on the Obituiary page of the Straits Times (27 March 2008),inserted by his family and relatives.
A man well loved by many, including the cabin crew of Singapore Airlines,Cyril was a cabin crew manager for almost 3 decades. He was in my opinion, one of the best and fairest managers we ever had.
Cyril was a kind man, taken advantage of(financially) by some his so-called buddies. He was driven to bankruptcy at one stage after his retirement by his "buddies".They manipulated and cheated him but poor Cyril forgave them. At that point of time,he comtemplated suicide but was saved by other well meaning friends and ex colleagues.
Goodbye Cyril and may your kind soul RIP.

Another SIA A380 affected by fuel pump problem

Singapore Airlines had grounded a second Airbus A380 aircraft for a fuel pump problem.

The incident on Monday night, delayed Sydney-bound passengers who had to switch to smaller planes.

In a statement issued today, airline spokesman Stephen Forshaw said the plane is now back in service.

He said the problem with the fuel pump was similar to a problem that grounded another A380 in February.

SIA is currently the only carrier operating the world's largest passenger jet.

Last week, it flew the plane for the first time on its Singapore-London route, after having first introduced the plane on regular Singapore-Sydney flights in October.

It currently operates three A380s and has another 16 on order.

Singapore Airlines will use its fourth A380, yet to be delivered, on its Singapore-Tokyo route from late May.

Another became SIA Girl..tutored by Luke Tan

Ya, this is another email SS or Luke had asked me to post here ( I got more visitors lah than his poor scarcely visited blog)

Hi Mr Tan,

Once again, I really appreciate your advice and tips. The recent interview experience was a good one for me. This time round, I prepared myself fully by resting well, anticipating the interview questions and how I would answer them.. Believe if one is truly sincere and determined, the interviewers can tell. Despite my nerves, I kept reminding myself to smile, smile and smile.. :D I also told the interviewers how committed I would be, if I were given the opportunity to become a Singapore Girl. Most of all, would like to tell other wannabes never to give up.. keep trying and the day will come!

Thank you Mr Tan.. May God bless you and your family.

Cheers,

Ms. "C"

This gal failed many times until she came to SS Tan's Talks

Produced here is an email SS Tan asked me to post (cos more ppl come to my blog than his haha and besides he gives me tips $$ too. Everyone knows SS is a generous man)for him. This is an email from a cabin crew wannabe who flung numerous times at the SIA interview. She had skin problem and all kinds but after attending SS Tan's Talk with 2 other wannabes, she finally made it.Out of the other two,one got in. So the passing rate was like 2 out of 3. Ok ok here it goes...

Dear Luke,(SS Tan's Christian name)

1st one, how I managed to go from rd 1 to mngt.
I think it is because I am such a positive person and self-aware of my likes and dislikes. I know this is the job for me. Why? Cos I love to help pple, and take care of people. I will love to be a approachable stewardess so that passengers find me likeable and hopefully it will make their short flight as pleasant as possible. That is my wish, being a good host on board and making sure all my guest are comfortable on board. That is coming from my passion and ideals in serving and how I can contribute to SIA. And I believe my strength, which is the pursuit of excellence, patience, independence, positive not only reasonates with the Coy's core values, it also make me very compatible with this job. From self interest point of view, I love to travel, imagine how I can go on a backpacking trip with just 1 female friend and to vietnam, Laos and Cambodia for 1 month, many will deem it very dangerous and there is indeed many tough times during the trip. I do love travelling. And last most impt reason, it's cos I love this job's challenges and its non-routine work time.

Hence, I will say, the most impt reason why I can succeed is cos, I really love this job and my strong belief this is sth for me. Thou I failed 2 times cos my skin check or maybe it's due to my weird looking elf ears, I maintain my positivity. I defended myself and this passion of mine when others tried to pour cold war on me. And most importantly, the determination to overcome all these problems come from within me, and people around me (parents, close friends and bf) saw my determination and started supporting me as they were impressed. It was surprising my parents did not object and instead felt very proud of me. My bf too, I think they were impressed by my determination and happy that I found my love. Having the support of the people I love, it is very important. They form my buoyancy when my own strength and optimism fail me, which it does happens at times, esp during the period where I find fault in every part of myself as part and parcel of reflection after a failure.

I guess my advice to many of the CC wannabe is that, just try your best and let God do the rest...and do not plan to fail, which means do not find back up plan as to, what if I can't make it to SIA? Should I try for other airlines, should I try for other jobs? If there are so many what if...it really undermine your determination and confidence. But this may be unrealistic to some, and I understand not many can afford to do it. Well, it just all boils down to how much you want this job I feel.

But, another point to take note, which is the hardest is that..as showing so much sheer determination, it just symbolises strength and it may make us seem to tough and interviewer may not like such die-hard attitude...So..I tried to psycho myself to be an angel a few days b4 the interview...haha...In fact, I realise there is a change in me, I start to smile at more pple, be a more pleasant person, complain less help people more, and see people's good side more than the bad ones, I take note of my p and q , mannerism and posture more and appreciate people ard us more. Remb last time I asked you about Joyce's strong character? I am actually like that too, just that I try to conceal it. So, I guess my advice is that, show internal determination, but externally be an angel. Thru self psycho-ing, it is possible =)

And ironically, when I went for the last interview and I suceeded, I didn't plan at all. I was busy with school work the day before and even had fears and didn't want to go. Sometimes, when we don't care about it, success will just come to you. And the interviewers could see my sincerity as my answers were obviously impromptu, I guess. So, my advice is perhaps for those that try many many times, maybe can take the approach of "take it easy" attitude, maybe success will just come as we tend to be more comfy with ourselves and smile naturaly when we are relaxed.

Another thing is that, we really have got to be truthful to ourselves and reflect on the reaons why we fail, I list out all the reasons, eg. looks too arrogant? Skin prob? too tough, too fierce? Walk too fast? Figure not good enough? etc...and I tried to change ALL of it. I guess the reflection part is the most painful as it force us to dig up all the things we do not wish to face. But it really do help, and try to prioritise and change them accordingly.

and for the round 1, try to practise in front of the mirror, repeat the speech till it is in our head. Most importantly, it must be sth that is truely you and it will flow easily, and I guess interviewers can see it too. Practise where to stop and smile.

Learn to practise the SIA smile. sometimes we tend to smile weakly, or arrogantly or even give a lopesided smile. It all affects how the interviewers judge us. My bf often call out "SIA smile" and I have to do it for him, and it can happen for whole of half a day, on the day b4 the interview.

For kebaya round, walk in front of the mirror. Pace yourself, learn how to lift your head up as if you are looking at someone and smile at him/her and yet still walking gracefully and in a straight line and with small steps. Hands should not sway too much, esp girls with broad shoulders like me, or we will look like we want to get involved with a fight.

Skin check. conceal under bright white light b4 interview. I concealed my face and put foundation for 1 hour. If they wan make up tips, can suggest them to come and find me? I will try ...hahaha..kidding la, think your wife is much better in this. =) Hmm, and learn to seize the chance by telling the lady you are going for treatment if you really are, as I believe this is what made me pass my skin check. hmm...Make sure gers with ears that stick out (dumbo ears), they will have to cut their hair short. And take care of skin, by eating vit e, put on cap, put on face mask... etc..

1-1 and management, I have got not much advice. I think your talk is very sufficient to cover all areas of the 1-1 and management interview already =) And my advice is no where near your expert's advice. =)

I really hope you can help those CC wannabe. I can understand how it feels, my confidence level dip down to my lowest point everytime I failed my interview. Many of my friends told me how hard they are coping with picking up the pieces, and how hard they cried after the interview...And most of my friends are NUS/SMU undergraduates. My heart really go out to them. I always believe so strongly in myself and I usually do not succumb my looks to other's judgements(not cos I think I am pretty but more of, I believe myself as a individual). But, SIA interview forced me to reflect on myself. That period was really bad when I keep finding fault with myself. Thinking back of the feeling/emotions I have been thru, I really don't want to go thru it again.

Hahah...for the 2nd part,

Dear Mr Tan,

I will like to thank you very much. You reassured us very much before the interview with your light hearted encounters as a CC and wise advice for the interviews. Mr Tan is very patient and kind to us. He called us up after every interview and remembers each and every of his students as a special individual. I am especially touched by his kind gesture. To me, Mr Tan is not only my advicer/ trainer, he is a friend too. Thank you for making my dream come through. And believing in us that we can do it even when others stop believing in us. When others believe that our numerous attempts in the walk-ins are futile, he believes that we can do it. And he never put us down, only gentle yet truthful advice. Thank you! Hope we will keep in touch! =)

(Don't put my name k...super attention attracting) hee...

Your student :)

My Confession

Yes, some of you guessed correctly that the following blogs had been created by me. I don't think there is anything wrong with that....is there?
Sure I make money from the ads placed around my blogs but don't envy me cos I hardly make enough to pay for my internet connection and the HP payment for my PC.
It's hard work I can assure. Sometimes my old eyes tear under the strain of the computer screen glare. I had to spend money changing my reading glasses every 6 months. I wouldn't dare ask for donation because my "loyal" visitors will screw me upside down. So my advertisers pay my peanut "salary" through Google. SS Tan also pays me for advertising his blog here ( banner at the top about the cabin crew thingy). He pays me S$1 a day...ooo he is so generous)

Aircrew of the Month

This next yarn reminds of my former classmate Pete. At school, Pete was always in the top 2/3 in our class, but once he left school, he never could settle in a job. He landed a job as a bus driver, but his denouement came when he took a detour and drove the bus to his home. Pete, got out, went in, left the passengers on the bus, had a cup of tea and drove on half an hour later. When the bus company discovered his antics, his supervisor dismissed him on the spot. The Airline flight attendant in this next tale is going the same way as Pete.

From a Stingem employee....' Welcome aboard Stingem Flight XXX to YYY.' We are pleased to have some of the best pilots in the industry... Unfortunately, none of them are on this flight...!'

Then he progressed to the famous ' Fasten Seatbelt Routine' . What he said was: 'To operate your seatbelt, insert the metal tab into the buckle, and pull tight. It works just like every other seatbelt, and if you don't know how to operate one, you probably shouldn't be out in public unsupervised.'

In the event of a sudden loss of cabin pressure, oxygen masks will descend from the ceiling. Stop screaming, grab the mask, and pull it over your face. If you have a small child travelling with you, secure your mask before assisting with theirs. If you are travelling with two or more small children, decide now which one you love the more.

After the plane landed, he said: 'As you exit the plane, make sure to gather all of your belongings. Anything left behind will be distributed evenly among the flight attendants'

His final announcement was: 'Thank you for flying Stingem Airlines. We hope you enjoyed giving us the business as much as we enjoyed taking you for a ride.'

SIA will act against those who distribute its training material

Singapore Airlines says it will take action against individuals misrepresenting themselves in such a way that people are led to believe they are representing the company, and if they distribute its training materials

This ex cabin crew executive must be .......

My ex colleague SS Tan must be having a wonderful dream right now in his sleep. He is now getting more publicity and is becoming famous because some ass is doing advertising for him without him knowing it.
Maybe I should join him in his quest to help cabin crew wannabes than to sit on my ass facing the computer.

The story now...

Could you believe that STOMPer Golden Bird Watcher ( forum Stomp..very popular one la) is complaining bitterly about SS coaching of cabin crew wannabe. He went to the extent of even stating the following:
"There should also be a governing body to ensure consumers are not conned into paying exorbitant fees for attending such courses that prey on individuals who are passionate about flying with the national carrier, as it is very detrimental to the professional image of the airlines," says the STOMPer.

I am wondering whether SS Tan is seeking legal advice regarding that statement and the posting in STOMP which implies he was conning wannabes....for more actions click here .

PS. The above draws about 25 comments at this point in time...read them cos they interesting......congrats STOMP cos you are going to have more visitors and members....hehehe

Shame on this Penang SQ steward wannabe.

I've received this from my ex-colleague SS Tan complaining to me about this aspiring-to-be steward with SIA cabin crew. I am really concerned if any airlines would want to employ this sort of person to be its cabin crew.

A big Shame for this Penang crew wannabe!
Gim Lim Tan (Kelly Services Inc) to lukeshow details Mar 10 (4 days ago) ReplyHi Luke,
Alright, I confirm my booking now and I will bank in the money to your account by today or latest tomorrow.cheers,
Steve Tan

The above is an email from this steward wannabe from Penang. Following that email,he subsequently phone me from Penang and told me the difficulties involved in transmitting the course fees to me in Singapore. He pleaded with me to make his case an exception ( I usually insist the would be participant deposit/transfer the fee into a bank account)and allow him to pay me "on the spot" when he arrives for the course.I can't believe that he didn't phone me after he arrived in S'pore 2 days ago and did not even appear for the course this morning.
I had rejected a few would-be participants who wanted to attend today's course because of this guy from Penang ( the whole day is reserved for only 1 participant).
Not only have I lost a day's business and wasted my time last night preparing the lesson for that Penang guy but denied those who sincerely wanted to attend the course.
I did call this Penang guy up and found that he was still sleeping at about 9.40 am this morning in his relative or friend's house at Bukit Panjang when he was supposed to be attending the course at 10 am.
He is going to KL for his interview tomorrow.

An email from "Lyn" an ex SQ Stewardess.

Subject: A fan!
Hi Boh Tong,

I'm a new and increasingly huge fan of your blog. It brings back lovely memories of my time with SQ, I resigned in March 07 with a heavy heart due to my medical implications. My bond wasn't even up then. I was diagnosed with depression because of an unpleasant incident during a nightstop in Zurich back in June 06. It was an incident that left a mark and I wasn't able to get over my trauma even after several initial counselling sessions with the company's appointed psychiatrist. I resigned as it was too much to bear at that time, and I knew I needed a longer time to heal. It has been almost a year since I'd resigned and there's nothing I want as much as to go back to SIA.

It took me a long time before I could bring myself to write to you. No one outside my family knows why I left SQ, at least not the real reason. My relatives and friends were mildly shocked, they knew I was having a good time in the airline, my sudden resignation made them ask me many questions that I had no answers for..... so much so that I don't leave my house unless necessary.

I am happy to say I have fully recovered now, though I still don't talk about this incident to anyone.

I wrote to cabin crew recruitment, applying under the cabin crew re-employment scheme but have yet to hear from them. I know there is an endless list of applicants and I'd have to wait for them to reach my email in time as there isn't a separate email address for ex crew.

Your entries made me realize how much I enjoyed working in SIA and just how wonderful the company really is. I can only hope the company is willing to consider accepting my application.

My point in writing to you is to say a big thank you, and to let you know that there are many readers out there. Majority of us are silent readers, though we're not anything less than fans. *grin*

Keep blogging for the readers who enjoy your blog tremendously, if not for yourself. Thank you for taking the time to share with us your priceless stories and experiences.

Best regards,Lyn

Worried cos girl friend is gonna be an SIA Gal.

Dear boh tong,

My girlfriend is about to become an air stewardess, and she's 19 coming on to 20. She just passed the interview rounds, which according to her were very easy! Anyways, is this a cause for concern for me? We've been together for 6 months and she is very reliable, hardworking, loyal to her friends, speaks French and has never once given me any worry. Until I read your blog, which I think was a good thing for me.

I am more worried that the captains will try to hit on her and force her to do funny things with them rather than she actively cheating on me, because she has lots of chances to do that but she doesn't. I am currently based in the ... for work and will be back in June, permanently.

Pls advise!

Thanks!

Concerned boyfriend

Any advice friends for the poor b/f?

Is she the "slapped" stewardess?

The thing that I am concerned is the legal fees of the plaintiff, who paid? If she had to pay her own legal fees, there is nothing much left to compensate her!

Recently, a man slapped an SBS driver for driving too slowly. He was given a jail sentence for assault. The Penal Code provides for a jail term for assault of a public servant, in this case, a public transport worker. A cabin crew working on board an airline is also a public transport worker. So why the difference in sentence meted out?

The only reason that I can think of is that money speaks. It all depends on who you are. I am enraged at the Courts for not upholding criminal justice. The monetary compensation is the civil suit. But the assault is a criminal offence under the Penal Code for which a jail term is mandatory.........Comments anyone?

Is she the "slapped" stewardess?

Sorry for the size of the pic but was Ms Then, the SIA gal who was slapped by a super rich passenger's wife got what she wanted? An out of court settlement(max is 60K)must have pleased Ms.Then even tho it could be a paltry sum of maybe 10K only (to the passenger concerned).
Many were disappointed when the case was settled out of court. Many expected to savour the secrets of how the super rich live to be revealed in court but alas it is not be.
Perhaps we should wait for another case of abuse by wealthy passengers against crew and hope this time it would a criminal charge rather than a civil suit.

Comments about the damn "ban" thing at interview.

These are only a few of the complaints about the "Ban" thing SIA dished out to candidates who failed their final cc interview round. I took these from the comment space in reply to my post "SQ be more tranparent in interview policy la"

Bt is right bcos in Dec 2006 i was booted out at the final rd and i went back for the Jan 2006 walkin at sheraton and was BOOTED out at the very first rd. After my failure at final rd of Dec 2006 i was told unofficially of my 2 month ban (verbally). Now i it was rumoured that i am banned for life but why???

I was booted out at the final round this month and the person who told me didn't informed me about the ban till I asked about it. So should I go try for the next interview in March? I am really confused. Some said that you might be blacklisted, others said that there are girls who got through despite being "banned".

There are so much confusion in this area and we hope someone from SQ will come out and say something.
This blog talks about types of "Crappy" employers like what would happen if their employees are being slapped, abused or assaulted by customers. Have a peep and give me your opinion under the comment space.

Is my blog that bad?

Sometimes I simply can't understand what visitors to my blog want. I just put up a survey (on top right corner) to ask for assessment or opinion on my blog and guess what? The first 2 rated my blog as "poor".
What is puzzling is only those 2 visitors gave their 2 cents whereas others (my active meter shows I've 120 visitor today) don't even care a damn to do anything.
Come on guys be a good sport and participate in the polls. It is free of charge anyway. Free stories in my blog, free poll, free to comment, free this and free that.
The world is full of these asses, who are either too lazy to contribute or just don't care a damn about other people's feeling.
Come on wake up and be sporting ok?

This M'sian gentleman financed my forum

When I wanted to closed my forum due to subscription problem, this Malaysia gentleman offered to help. He wanted to pay the full amount for the one year renewal fees of S$150. I refused and eventually let him help with half of that amount.
The reason "Redhot2008",(his forum name)wanted to help was because he found my forum to be amusing and interesting. He told me during his night shift he destressed himself by accessing and reading the contributions in the forum whenever he was free from his work.
Do you know that after 1 1/2 years of blogging,no one out of the hundreds of thousand of visitors to my blogs had even donated a single cent or rupee or rupiah at all, except Redhot2008 who is not even rich at all (he is struggling with his stressful US$1,000 a month salary job)?
I had put up a Paypal icon at the side of my blog for more than a year and Redhot2008 was the sole activator....bless you Red!
Just in case those who think I make a lot of $$ from the ads I put around the forum, think again. FYI, I don't even collect more than 5 cents a day and on certain days its zero.
As a reward for his contribution, I took the trouble to meet and thank Red personally when he came to Singapore last week to attend a friend's wedding. Usually I do not meet my blog "visitors" personally.
Thank you again Red and may you be blessed for your kind gesture.

Malaysia Airlines Managing Director / CEO, Idris Jala said, "I am very proud of our cabin crew and their outstanding performance. Our crew treat our customers as guests in our own home. They are natural, spontaneous, determined and willing to demonstrate the best of Malaysian hospitality." "Throughout the year, our crew worked very hard to improve our service delivery as part of our airline-wide initiative to enhance customer experience, and I am delighted that their efforts have been recognized by the customers. This will go a long way in building our brand, customer value and relationship.” The cabin staff showcased their winning ways, and regained the award which they won for several years in the past.
Focused on the quality of onboard customer experience, the survey also looked at the "soft service" provided including cabin staff friendliness, enthusiasm and attentiveness, sincerity as well as consistency in service delivery, in addition to the usual general service efficiency.
Commenting on the survey result, Skytrax CEO, Mr Edward Plaisted said “For the last 4 weeks of this survey, we have seen the winning position move around between the final top 3 airlines several times. In the end, Malaysia Airlines’ passenger support saw them through to the 2007 title, and we congratulate them for this worthy achievement.”
