Expression of frustration by SQ cabin crew

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "What do u think of this comment?":

It is true. Many crew are very creative and talented. They are also able to think outside the box.
That is why they were selected too.

If you have what it takes to be a SQ crew, then that is what the job market outside wants too!

You are all able to make decisions that are balanced and meet the interest of customers and staff. Why continue to do excellent work and not be recognised? One wrong move ( which is entirely human ) will send you for a disciplinary inquiry. You may not get the sack.
But would you still have the fire?

You would have no choice but to stay... only because you had stayed too long and got comfortable and lazy.

Most cabin crew have great, likeable persona.. are quick thinkers while on your feet ( the more senior ones )and extremely resourceful. These are qualities that many employers outside of SQ would love.Do not waste your effort in a job that appears to pay well.
Go and allow your skills and attitude to be appreciated by others... you will be surprised how many jobs are available that you can do.. and yet be able to afford to fly to JFK or TYO

Free tickets? Oh! gimme a break man!.. and balloting? and get treated like dirt? ( dont forget to inlcude the list price to your tax )
Spend your energy and focus on doing really a good job and what you are passionate about.
Where you will be appreciated. and not be spied, hunted and threatened and made to be totally indebted to an employer that knows you as staff no: 000076543H who offloaded a coke, and did not submit an MC whithin x days, and " sorry, your application for annual leave in Dec cannot be approved due to quota.." and yet, some still think its a great Fortune 500 comapny.... oh! boy!

It is indeed disheartening and demoralising when the Management do not value the Senior crew.Unlike other profession(if I can call it that),Cabin Crew is unique. You don't learn the ropes from books and manuals, you gain experience. When decisions are made,it's from the past experiences that you gleaned from.Unfortunately most of the CCEs in the office are very young and most have very little or no experience as a flying crew.Well,if SIA thinks they can manage and maintain where they are today(which i think they are clinging on to by a thread!)than good luck to them.Senior crew are a valued asset(well,..most anyway) and shouldn't be discounted as a dispensable commodity.

In SQ, you are not promoted because of your abilities.
You are promoted because so that blame can be assigned to you!!
Did you all not realise that?

Look back at history...
ask yourselves...

BT: I sincerely hope cc management will address the concerns and frustration of its cabin crew esp the senior ones. I also hope Alan & co. will also help to raise the morale of its members. Surely things didn't look as good as when the CCE(C/T)s were around.
There is a popular saying and it's appropriate to apply to this situation..."Penny wise pound foolish"

Hi BT. No matter how many people post their grivences, the Mgmt will not change. Why? Because they think they are all smart and have all the answers. We can bitch till the cows come home, things will not change. Mgmt have their agenda, and its definately not in the interest of CC. Anyway CC is a only a stepping stone in SQ for them. Mark my words, 5 yrs down the road if BTs blog is still around, you will still see the same old grievences. If you are still a CC, forget about changing things. Its either you stay or you go. Thats what I did, I went & I'm so much happier today. Only regret is not leaving sooner.

It took the country 40 years to decide in opening the so call IR. (Casino).

Identical of the Airline.

Why?

Never listen to feedback and constructive critism.

What feedback?

Eg Team Flying never gone down well! Never in favour of it!

Took years for team flying to be removed!

Show clearly a bunch of "NITWITS" seat warmers who implement without considering the negative impact of team flying!

If you look back, when does all these happen? Before or after Team flying? Before or after a particular SVP took over? Removing Team flying saves the company millions and give the SVP million in Bonuses.

Non Team flying disband the unity among crew, the bonding and senses of belonging. Human need to feel wanted, belonging to a group. We are social animals and not lone ranger. Look at what's happening now, crew don't even interact among themselves. Why bother ? Its only one flight, BYE! No bonding no relationship, who will bother to guide, nurture and motivate someone you don't even know and don't give you a damn?

During Team flying when the top is sucky, the rest unite together to go thru the flight creating the bonding thru suffering and supporting each other. If the top is a good leader, the whole team bond together, even the guest staring benefits from it. I made lots of life long friends during that time. Now? No a single after so many years. Its such a sad situation, imagine you working in a office for years without making any real friends (Hi! Bye! friends doesn't count)

Junior is king now, so back stabbing is rampant, there is no one watching your back or supporting you in the work place as everyone is on their own now. Thats good for the management, disunite the crew, let them spied on each other and act as the watch dog for them. Creating fear and controlling the crew using this fear. (UFS, spies encouraging junior to complain etc.) Disunited crew equal weaker voices, so all company policies will go thru without any resistance. Now you don't dare to talk, take, teach and care anymore. That's the side effect of this strategy. Think the management don't know? Ya sure they know, they just accept it after they weight the Pros & Cons. Pushing out damage control Campaign to limit the damages. Asking the crew to bring back crew culture, creating bonding etc. Sad to sad all these fails badly thus resulting in today's situation.

Take the CCE out of the equation please! I don't see any real contribution by them other then the paper work they do. I have never been motivated, guided or shown concern for by my so many CCEs.

Just my take on the current situation.

There are always the pros anmd cons of Team flying.

However the cons outweigh the pros!

If you are fortunate getting a favourable leader, then you will be always looking forward to all your flights.

If your team sucks, then you will see the faces of the crew as if they are attending a funeral of a loved one. No one would even want to change flight with you.

"No bonding no relationship, who will bother...". Yes sexual harrassment and molest cases were rampant during team flying. Why?
When you get to familiar with your fellow crew, people dont know their limits or may be just trying to get even with the other party.

This is not an office environment where you see the same faces everyday. Most crew joined cc is partly because of that.

Your circle fo friends will also be limited.

"Removing Team flying saves the company millions and give..." before the implementation it was supposingly help the co to save millions. It started on a trial run with selected wards during the late 80s.

This is just a job! Just be commited and dedicated in doing it. Not "all" crew are receptive when corrected. No matter how you do it! That's their mentality. One wrong move and you will be in serious trouble from the co point of view.

You don't really know who your friends are! So talk less and think more.

End of the day you can go back home to your loved ones and still have a job!

That's REALITY!

Anonymous said...

Totally agree. This is a JOB. Just do what is ask of you, nothing more, nothing less. The Graduates sitting in the Office knows better. So just take directions & you be covered. After the JOB, go home & spend time with your loved ones. We are becoming like the Euro/American Airlines - just do the job.
I join SQ even before team flying. I make many friends thru'interaction at lunch/dinner tables, crew room, etc. We meet back home and create bonding. Everyone put in a little effort and are selfless. If our Snr Crew are tyrant, we try to soften his heart thus improve our EQ.Back then, flying was not a JOB but a LIFESTYLE. We dress well, behave well, and there was mystic. People outside of us were in awe and look upon us. Today, the generation have change. No more crew culture but MY culture. What with the Management supportive of feedbacks and encouraging it.
So all out there, just do the JOB, talk less and spend time in your room when overseas, to read and upgrade. Then leave. Nobody love you.

"Just do your job"
Ahhh!.. thats what many are doing!
Thats ok!... but how long can you keep " just do your job"?.. 3years?
5 years?.. where is the passion?

You will end up like some uninspired employee in some god forsaken corner of government like ministry of education teachers in some backwater school somewhere in singapore.

Fine, you may survive with 4K or 5K take home pay.. wait till your Union seals a contract with management to forgo more hotels and move the lot near the airport to save another 50cents, put you on a bus to reposition you to SFO from LAX and pax you home.
Shiok right? watch movie on board right? No need to work right?
Got time to attend your degree course right? get paid doing it too right?

A bunch of intelligent but narrow minded people who will serve with passion?
Ha! ha!... wait long long.

Anonymous said...

Most employees in Singapore, including cabin crew, are still employed only because of the job credit scheme.
Remove this scheme, and at least 200 cabin crew will be retrenched by this time.
"The Jobs Credit is calculated based on 12% of the first $2,500 of the derived wage cost for each eligible employee on the employer's CPF payroll. This means the employer will receive up to $900 per employee for each payment (12% x $2,500 x 3 months)."

Thank your Government. Not your employer, for this.

But how long will the crutches be used?

Think.

I joined CC during the days of Team Flying, it was so FUN! Morale was superb, everyone helping each other and enjoying ourselves outstation. Now with the new breed of Gen Y crew, I would rather be a lone ranger. I wont even bother to correct their mistakes, coz its not my problem. I'm here just to do my fair share of work and go home to my love ones. It's just a shitty high paid waiter JOB. Look at the quality of the stewardess, they are UGLY and can't even do a simple job properly. Go to orchard road and you can easily spot a gal prettier than a SQ stewardess, and these stewardess think they are so god damn pretty just becoz they are in SQ when they actually look like SHIT..

Anonymous said...

They were pretty, until SQ got them.
THEN... they became FUGLY.
THEN... no one told them.

THEN... the unionist said they could work even if they were FUGLY.

Very Very interesting comment.I support Eddie for grooming Alan and everyone have to go sooner or later.Look at all the crew who had passed on.Latest is Rex.A good man. Having said that, I appreciate Alan at the helm of the current Union.Look at today's situation (financial crisis) and SARs. With Alan at the helm, I still have my job and can feed my family. Alan had tried his very best to avoid RETRENCHMENT. He shrewdly find alternatives to hold jobs, what with 11% flight cuts then as reported in the press. Now we can see shortage of crew. Its very healthy. Hope the Economy picks up. My appreciation to Alan and his team for ensuring that we still have our jobs and can bring back the bacon. My sincere thank you and I will definately vote for you Alan. To Eddie, please have a wonderful and happy retirement and God Bless.

Very well said. Alan is doing a great job. Pls do vote for the HEART team. We will strive harder to serve the CC better.

Very little effort from the union.
Gahmen was giving job credit to help save jobs. Thats why crew were sent for courses... company gets reimbursed for crew's absence from work. The company will get nothing if they retrenched the crew.
Company did not want to be caught wrong footed again like SARS.
It was not purely a union effort.

Do not be fooled.

Should we all be grateful for the union? They did not get me employed. It was my own effort.
Could they help with my promotion by creating more ranks or perhaps help to get rid of senior crew, so that juniors could replace them?
Union member or not, there is no difference.
Union exists only at the grace of the company. Any bravado is false.
Sure, they are affiliated to NTUC.
Thats all they can do, drop names.

Toothless, useless, ball less, soon will be hairless too.

Career path of cabin crew
1-7 yrs= FSS/FS
7-12 yrs= LSS/LS
12-17yrs= CSS/CS
17-20yrs= IFSS/IFS

7-12yrs as cabin crew your age would be around 24 to 30
This is the most crucial part of your life.. marriage, home and car.
Whats the future you ask? Stay on and be crew?
Watch your back? watch your roster?
Watch your income? look out for retrenchment? worry about union trying to save your rank? Look out for nasty pax? look out for promotions? back aches, heart aches, money aches.. eat instant noodles so that can afford car.

After 12yrs, junior gets promoted and you get left behind.. frustration again.. your friends outside moving along and learning more about budgets, planning, project management, presentations and negotiating skills.
Meanwhile, after 12yrs, what have you learnt?.. LV bag prices, sms charges from HKG very X, LON duck rice very shiok, LA cosmestics cheaper, NRT 100Yen better selection, AUH lamb chops damn shiok... Internet free in crew lounge in ZRH.
Yah! damn useful skills! how to report sick last minute without repercussion..

"I was a supervisor with SQ and I learnt people skills..."

yeah, right.. then how come service quality declining? how come crew reporting on crew?
how come morale so low?.. how come seniors not imparting skills to juniors? how come everyone "just do their job"...

Wake up!.. the show is over!!

Union or no Union,SQ is still one of the best place(Cabin Crew) to work in.For those who have friends working out of SQ,sit down, have a heart to heart chat with them. You will discover that out there where you think the pasture is greener than green,is a facade. Most of my friends are middle to upper management, and let me tell you something, they are working like dogs nowadays. They hardly have time for their family, let alone time for themselves. And to think, more than 3/5 of our lifes we will spent working and slogging for $$$.Picture this......you can't stand your superior, your co-horts and subordinates, but every morning you have to show your face in the office to 'tanh chiat'.In the airlines, even if you can't stand a particular supervisory crew,at most you have to bear with him/her for 10 days, and that also not all the 10 days and not all the sectors.
To sum up,you better at least enjoy your work a bit coz otherwise, next thing you know,it's retirement time and what can you ask yourself?Have you ACTUALLY enjoyed your life(even whilst working)?Or waiting till your bones are brittle and creaking to try to squeeze as much of a good time in your twilight years?

I agree with the above comment. But it is only HALF-TRUTH. Let me say something to clarify less those who read the above comment will think that all crew are stupid and idiot. From what I read in the papers, SQ cut 11% of their flights during the current financial crisis. So if there is 7000 crew than with the cuts, there will be excess of more that 700 crew. Yes, the Garmen give $$ to Company in the form of Job Credit. BUT if I am correct, it only give the $$ to citizens and PRs. So in CC, not all are citizens & PRs. So the more that 700 excess crew are not all citizens or PRs and thus they are not entitle for job credit. So why not retrench them. Guess the company cannot retrench foreigner without also retrenching citizens as it don't want to have political backlash.
Take SARs which lasted for 06 months, there was retrenchment. I understand from my seniors that the retrenchment was not necessary as the numbers retrench was negligible. My seniors tell me that retrenchment was done then as "cleaning house" so both parties can clear the people they target. I thank Alan for not having this mentality and his cut costs to save jobs mentality as advocate by NTUC. Imagine if Alan have the mentality of cut jobs to save costs and his need to "clean house" then there will be retrenchment. Thank you Alan and team for ensuring that all of us still manage to hold on to our jobs during this hard economic times.

BT. It is easier to say that crew can earn more by switching job and the grass is greener on the other side. You know why the grass is greener? It is because there is more shit (fertiliser) to make the grass more green. Anyway, I have friends who believe that the grass is greener and they left for that green pasture? What happen? They have to change their comfortable lifestyle. They have to downgrade their house, sell their cars and make do with what less they were earning. Most of them told me that they should have stayed in CC and be more committed. Well, I told them that they cannot reverse their decision and just to accept what they have decided. So those who advocated that the grass is greener on the other side, are a lucky lot as they have the skill to earn more and be comfortable.

Yah! damn useful skills!"

You could obtain better skills if you CHOOSE to! Being all over the world, there're always something you can pick up. Like the different business cultures from different countries, exchange rates, languages, geographical knowledge, network expansion and many more! Many crew still think dubai is part of saudi arabia and africa is a country. Ignorance! If you take your time to mingle with the locals, leave the four walls of the hotel and go to places other than the "crew joints", you'll begin to realize the vast untapped potentials just waiting for you to experience! I'm only 1 year+ flying and i've had job offers from south africa, which i politely declined, but who knows what the future holds. Negativity won't do any good!

Anonymous said...

Please be careful on taking up job offers. We have crew who work in S.Africa and finally cannot make it and come back home and was shock when there is no job awaiting. We also have crew who went to Oz to try to venture and came back penniless. The world is not what you expected. There is many complexities. What move people from seeking greener pasture is that their inability to be contented with what they have and when they realise about the greener pasture, behold! they realise that what they had left was much much better.

I hope crew are reading this.
Only the die hards can make a career out of this.
Others should move on and put their experiences to good use.

Not quite so too?
I beg to differ.

"Any Company cannot made claim to "job credit" PAYMENT when they start to retrench any workers,
so citizens and PR payment claims stops if they retrench any crew, local or foreigners included?"

Check the guidelines in managing excess manpower and retrenchment!
"The Jobs Credit is calculated based on 12% of the first $2,500 of the derived wage cost for each eligible employee on the employer's CPF payroll.

This means the employer will receive up to $900 per employee for each payment (12% x $2,500 x 3 months)."
Good money that they stand to lose and forsake including the additional retrenchment payout.

The company will get nothing $$ than if they retrenched the foreign crew or anyone for that matter?

Besides, when economy improves and upturn, they have a hard time recruiting and filling up the shortage number?

Company did not want to be caught wrong footed again like SARS.

Final outcome depends on which is the best option to take is obviously a no brainer here?

The real saviour is the govenment of Singapore, whose budget policies like SPURS and job credits has shown far sightness, wisdom and vision, saving jobs, and keeping
many Singaporeans and workers still gainfully employed.

Thank you.

My two cents.

True and I agree. We have an excellent government and all of us must support them. I surely will support them for their people-people policies. The Singapore Govt. cares for its people. Having said that, RETRENCHMENT can still happen due to structural re-organisation as reported in the Straits Times recently.
