Stand By SIA Cabin Crew

When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we see
No I won't be afraid
No I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

And darling, darling stand by me
Oh, now, now, stand by me
Stand by me, stand by me

If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
And the mountain should crumble to the sea
I won't cry, I won't cry
No I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

And darling, darling stand by me
Oh, stand by me
Stand by me, stand by me, stand by me

Darling, darling stand by me
Stand by me
Oh stand by me, stand by me, stand by me

Did she bring him luck?

At long last the 14 hours of flying non stop from S'pore to London was over. Max managed to get the key to his hotel room. The thought of having 2 off days  in London overcame the trauma he endured during the 16 hours of duty time. The flight was packed with demanding passengers and it was hard coping with his senior crew.

After having his shower Max took a Piccadilly train from Gloucester station and left for Piccadilly Station, the nearest tube station to London Chinatown. Max's favourite char siew duck rice was in a restaurant in Chinatown. He would never failed to visit Chinatown for his favorite dish.

The restaurant was crowded with diners from all over the world. It was noisy too. There was only one small table available and the waiter urshered Max to that table.

Chinese tea was served and before Max could sip his tea,an old haggard looking lady of European descent sheepishly asked Max whether she could share the table. Max gestured her to the only seat left. She took a bow and thanked Max.

The old lady and Max had placed their dinner order and it took a long time before their dinner was served. While waiting for their meals, Max and the old lady did not speak to each other except for the occaional smile they exchanged with each other.

After dinner, the old lady was pleasantly surprised when Max paid for her meal. She insisted on paying Max but Max politely declined to accept.

During the time when they were waiting for their dinner to arrive,Max noticed that the old lady was dressed in old tattered clothings. The dress was old and patched up but it looked clean. She had an old worn out handbag. Max took pity on the old lady and decided to pay for her 5 pound dinner which was nothing more than a plate of fried rice. After all Max told himself that the allowances he earned on this London flight was more than a thousand dollars.

Max took a walk around Chinatown and left for his hotel after buying a few cans of Coke and some groceries which he might need in the middle of the night.

That night Max was woken up from his sleep by some noises which sounded like someone talking to him. He looked up and in the dim room light could see an old lady seated across from his bed in a chair smiling at him. Max noticed it was the same lady who had shared his table at Chinatown. At this point Max could feel the goose pimples all over his body. He was scared stiff but the old lady lifted up her hands, smiled and vanished into the thin air.
Max could not sleep and remained so until dawn.

Back at Singapore a week later, Max found that his wife was pregnant. They had always wanted a baby but Max's wife could not conceived. They had been married for a couple of years and the knowledge that his wife was pregnant was indeed good news.

Following the news his wife was pregnant, Max also won a big sum of money by betting on lottery.

Indeed,Max and his wife suspected the old lady whom Max met in London must
have had given them good luck.

Seniors bully juniors...still going on?

The news came at a technical crew party that one of their retired colleagues, a capt lobster has died of a heart attack. My friend who was at the party told me he was shocked to hear that some of lobster's colleagues met the news with a "good riddance" comment. I found out many of lobster's colleagues didn't like him because he gave them a hard time when they flew with him as their co-pilots. He was rude towards them and also a big bully. He made most of them shivered when they flew with him.
The above also reminded me of a story of a young co-pilot who was so very terrified of his commander. When he arrived at the aircraft he asked me whether I knew the commander of our flight well ( I was a chief steward at that time)? I replied I knew the commander well and he was a nice man. To this, the co-pilot disagreed with me. He told me that commander was an ass and would give his co-pilot a lot of pressure. He pleaded with me to tell the  commander not to traumatized him during the flight which I did.
Many years later when that young co-pilot became a capt he spared no effort in giving his junior a difficult time too, I was told. What an ass he was!
It was the same story in cabin crew. However, I heard things have changed since I left. It seems the junior crew are now given what is called a UFS ( upward feedback system) in which they could give feedback on their seniors' work performances to the office. This is a subtle way of telling the seniors "you better stop your bullying and lazy attitude".
Naturally the seniors aren't happy with the UFS, thanks to TPT their former svp who introduced the UFS.
I don't really don't know whether the UFS has affected the seniors'morale but I was told it does to a large extent.
I also heard the pilots now have a system similar to the UFS.

10 best airlines

World's Best Airlines

Find out which airlines earn high marks with passengers, and which don’t.
By Everett Potter
Tired fliers often think about how nice it would be to stretch out across a whole row of economy-class seats and take a nap. But let’s face it: airline seats were simply not designed for napping. That is, until Air New Zealand introduced its "Sky Couch," with flip-up seats created for just that purpose.

Comforts like these are just one reason ANZ was voted the No. 4 World’s Best Airline in our annual World’s Best Awards, where our readers ranked 76 airlines based on cabin comfort, in-flight service, customer service, value, and food.

So which airlines came out on top? International airlines virtually own the top 20 World’s Best Airlines; only two U.S. carriers made the list. Asian and Middle Eastern carriers dominate the top 10, with scores that are remarkably consistent from year to year, such as this year’s No. 3-ranked Etihad Airways, a United Arab Emirates-based carrier.

One thing is clear: the quest by the top-ranked airlines to become even better is raising the stakes. The leading carriers are vying to upgrade seating in every class—so-called thin seats in economy that allow everyone to recline without disturbing neighbors are all the rage among Asian carriers. For example, Korean Air, which ranks No. 9, earned points for its ergo-friendly “slim seats.”

But ultimately, it’s service that makes—or breaks—an airline’s ranking. Great on-the-ground customer service is vital to a high ranking. But even more important—and more highly weighted—is in-flight service. After all, you probably won’t remember a cramped coach seat, but you’ll definitely remember (and possibly complain about) a rude flight attendant.

So check out the World’s Best Airlines:

No. 1 Singapore Airlines

In every category of our awards, Singapore Airlines consistently outpaces the pack. Even though its scores went down—slightly—since 2010, it still beats the competition, thanks to innovations such as in-flight Wi-Fi, entertainment systems that allow you to play your own video and audio through your iPod, and USB ports for all passengers. But it’s the famous in-flight service—credit the legendary Singapore Girl in her sarong designed by Parisian couturier Pierre Balmain—that still keeps the rest of the pack at bay.

No. 2 Emirates

Ranked No. 2 as it was in 2010, the airline has improved its scores and even taken on a better reputation for value and food, while steadfastly maintaining its reliability for both in-flight service and customer service. Its reputation as an innovator—it pioneered laptop Wi-Fi in 2004 and mobile phones back in 2008—is another reason it remains one of our readers’ favorites.

No. 3 Etihad Airways

High marks all around, but the second-highest scores for in-flight service are the hallmarks of this flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates. On-board comforts include Cradle Recline seats in economy class, for a seat pitch of 32 to 34 inches. Apart from 600 hours of in-flight entertainment, you can charge and play your iPod and other devices through its E-BOX System.

No. 4 Air New Zealand

Improved cabin comfort and an increase in value helped Air New Zealand climb up the ranks from seventh position in last year’s poll. Food, in-flight service, and customer service also went up, just enough to nudge the carrier into our top five category. The airline’s Skycouch—three economy seats that convert to a bed—must have helped the cabin comfort ranking.

No. 5 Virgin America

The highest-ranking domestic airline in our poll—and the only one in the top five—Virgin America scores impressively high marks with incremental improvements in every category. In other words, the airline founded on Virgin Atlantic’s formula for service, innovation, and attitude just keeps on getting better. The combination of low fares and tech improvements—it’s installing Lufthansa Systems’ BoardConnect to radically upgrade its Red entertainment system to enable you to use your own devices—keep it at the forefront.

No. 6 Virgin Atlantic Airways

Close on the heels of its American offspring comes Sir Richard Branson’s flagship carrier, which pioneered cheek and style (not to mention seat-back video and amenity kits in every class) and gave the customers what they wanted (including pioneering economy plus). Fliers seem to like it, judging by the scores that have edged up in every category since last year. But since the other airlines did even better, it slipped from last year’s No. 4 position.

No. 7 Cathay Pacific Airways

Cathay has always played second fiddle to Singapore when it comes to Asia-based airlines, and despite incremental improvements in every category except food—down just a tad—it slipped down from last year’s No. 5 ranking. But a flight on Cathay remains a singular pleasure. The “fixed shell” economy seat means that no one can recline into your space (your seat reclines within your space).

No. 8 All Nippon Airways

The carrier that used to exist in the shadow of Japan Air Lines continues to move up the ranks from last year’s 11th position—and way ahead of JAL. Marked improvements in cabin comfort, in-flight service, customer service, and value helped. And that’s even before it introduced such innovations as women’s-only bathrooms with Japanese-style bidet-toilets on the new Dreamliner 787.

No. 9 Korean Air

Korean Air edged up from tenth place last year, with readers giving it slightly better scores in every category. Noteworthy are the ergonomically designed “slim seats” in economy with 34-inch pitch, not to mention the USB ports and chargers at every seat. The menus—Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Western are standard on every flight—have also improved.

No. 10 Thai International Airways

While Thai Airways improved in every category, other airlines did more. Hence the fall from last year’s No. 8 position. But it did rank higher with customer and in-flight service, as well as food. After all, this carrier takes care of kids, with free toys, games, and books, and offers private Premium Economy cabins with 42-inch pitch seats with 122 degrees of recline. It’s just that the other guys pushed the envelope a bit further.

Attempted robberies and robberies during night stops.

Case 1

Over the years crew had been the victims of either attempted robberies or robberies during their stay overseas. Most robberies and violent ones occurred in the USA.
There was a case of 2 male crew who were almost shot dead when they foiled an attempted robbery in Los Angeles.
Bill and Jeff were waiting for the traffic lights to change so they could cross the road back to their hotel. All of a sudden a black man who stood beside them whipped out a gun and pointed and one of them, demanding for the Rolex watch he was wearing. He also demanded the 2 crew emptied their pockets and wallets. All along the robber was pointing and waving the gun at these 2 crew.
Within a second or two, Jeff scooted off and that was when the gunman fired at him. Bill ran away in the opposite direction as fast as he could. The robber fired a couple of shots at the 2 of them, missing them by
an inch or two.
The case was reported to LAPD and the 2 crew were told they were very lucky to have escaped unhurt.

Case 2

Jack was a conceited steward who thought he was god's gift to women. One night while waiting for a cab in Sydney just outside the hotel he was staying, a pretty young Australian lady stopped her huge car and gave Jack a lift. Jack was very happy and told the lady he had wanted to go to Chinatown. She was invited to have a meal with him.
A couple of minutes later, the lady drove the car into an alley, stopped, opened the car door and ran away. The action caught Jack by surprise. Suddenly 3 big fellows with tattoos on their big muscular arms appeared from nowhere and caught hold of Jack. They demanded money. Jack was shocked and was scared to death. At first he refused but one of them strangled (chekek) Jack so badly that Jack threw his wallet to the other 2. They took Jack's wallet which contained about $500 of Australian and foreign currencies. They also took his expensive watch and gold chain he was wearing. Jack was lucky he wasn't hurt.

Case 3

A stewardess was waiting for the lights to change at an inter-junction in LA. It was around noon and the sun was shining although it was a little chilly in the autumn. Janet was humming a song and waiting. All of a sudden, a big black guy came out of his car, grabbed Janet's LV handbag. Janet refused to let go off her expensive LV bag and in the process was dragged along to his car. Screaming on top of her voice with string of cars passing by, no one stopped to help Janet. She reluctantly let go of her handbag because it hurting her badly. The snatcher drove off in high speed with Janet's bag which contained an undisclosed amount of cash and jewelries.

Case 4

Muthu befriended a blondie in San Francisco and invited her for a drink in his hotel room. After having a few drinks Muthu excused himself and went to the toilet . When Muthu came out of the toilet he noticed the blondie had disappeared. Then he realised she had stolen his wallet. A report was made but the blondie was nowhere to be seen.

GC to Boh Tong...

i've just come across your blog and good work to you uncle BT, I must say! :)

it takes a lot of courage and passion to do something like airing your views to the world, knowing that there will be people out there who may disagree with you and react aggressively because of that.

it's easy to hate anonymously, but take it that these people may have been hurt before and as a result, have taken a personal agenda with what you have written.

nevertheless, all the best Uncle BT, and i will go on reading your blog for as long as it exists. :)

Tomoko the Japanese Stewardess .....

A lovely innocent looking Japanese stewardess by the name of Tomoko was so much in love with a Singaporean called Albert. After a whirlwind courtship, they got married. Albert was a houseman ( trainee doctor) at the General Hospital. He was tall, well built , handsome and a good talker. Tomoko was impressed with everything that Albert did. Why not?, especially a medical graduate from the University of Indiana,USA.

Albert was an extremely friendly doctor at the hospital. He was confident and yet able to empathize with his patients. He was also well liked by his patients' relatives because he was always accommodating and helpful.

To his colleagues, Albert was not as competent as he should be in his work. On many ocassions, Albert would turn to his colleagues for assistance in his work. But then, his colleagues would not mind helping Albert because he was always humble and nice to them.

When Albert was transferred to Toa Payoh Hospital, he was into his fifth month as a houseman. He faltered many times and made silly medical decisions and mistakes. His departmental head found it strange that Albert was ignorant of some simple medical procedures.

"Enough is enough" said Dr. Teo, Albert's departmental head and he personally investigated Albert's background. Dr. Teo decided to check with the university which Albert had acquired the medical degree. To his surprised, he was told that Abert had never attended the university.

Dr. Teo called his superior to inform him of this serious matter.

To cut the story short, Albert was found to have forged his medical degree. Soon after, Albert was arrested, charged and sentenced to 5 months imprisonement.

Hi friends, this story was published in the Straits Times sometime in 1995. Anyone heard about this case before?

BT: I met Albert not too long ago and he proposed doing business with me. He didn't realised I knew about his background.

My flat under renovation ..so leh cheh one.

The Costa Sands Chalet at Downtown East was not a bad place to visit. The chalet wasn't that fantastic but the number of food stalls, restaurant and cafe will enchant you.
We stayed at the chalet cos our flat is under renovation. Remember the gal who rode her bike into my flat? She broke my floor tiles.
So much inconvenience but ok lah I needed a break so not a bad idea to stay at the chalet.
The food at the food court was not bad. Rather cheap when compared to restaurants like Lemon Grass, Buddy etc.
The Cappuccino at MacDonald is excellent ( $2.60 for a small cup). The fish and chips at Fish & Co Express is cheap and good ($5.90 per set which includes a regular size cold drink). There are at least 100 eateries at Downtown East and E Hub.

Written and sung by Hank Williams Snr.

Title: You Win Again

The news is out all over town
That you've been seen out runnin' around
I know that I should leave but then
I just can't go you win again
This heart of mine could never
See what everybody knew but me
Just trusting you was my great sin what can
I do you win again
I'm sorry for your victim now
Cause soon his head like mine will bow
He'll give his heart but all in vain
And someday say you win again
You have no heart you got no shame
You take true love and give the blame
I guess that I should not complain
I love you still you won again

Alamak, she broke my flooring lah!

Despite of having warned her,my friend rode her bike into my house and broke my floor tiles ( I took this video as evidence as my wife wasn't at home at that time)

Conned!

VK, a senior crew told me this story. He was night stopping in Bangkok when the following incidence took place. While walking back to his hotel, a car pulled up next to him. A Middle Eastern looking man came out of the car and asked VK for direction. VK told him he was a foreigner too and not familiar with the road direction in Bangkok. The stranger was a gentleman looking sort with a polite and cheerful disposition. They chatted for a while and in no time, VK took out his wallet full of S'pore and foreign currencies and showed it to the stranger. The stranger told VK he had never seen the S'pore $50 notes. He politely asked VK whether he could "feel" the other currencies. VK felt the man was a foreigner and it should be fine.
After going through most of the notes in VK's wallet, the stranger thanked VK and left.
A few minutes later back in his hotel room VK was shocked to find that he had  2 S'pore $50 notes as well as some US dollar notes missing.

BT:...Psst! I will be having a drink at a newly open Kopitiam at Fernvale this evening with VK. Will get more stories from him and post them here hehehe.

Kelvin Kwan Zhia Tat (above), 32, pleaded guilty to donning his Singapore Airlines pilot uniform and pretending to be on official duty at Terminal 2's transit area without satisfactory excuse. -- ST PHOTO: WONG KWAI CHOW

By Elena Chong
A pilot was fined $600 on Thursday for wilfully trespassing at Changi airport's transit area last July.

Kelvin Kwan Zhia Tat, 32, pleaded guilty to donning his Singapore Airlines pilot uniform and pretending to be on official duty at Terminal 2's transit area without satisfactory excuse.

A court heard that he arrived at Changi Airport on July 22 last year with a female friend who was departing for Bangkok. He was wearing his SIA uniform and crew pass when he was not on duty.

His intention was to send his friend off at the transit area. After getting in, he went to the nearby toilet and changed into civilian attire.

Useful tips on Western Dinning Etiquette.

To be a cabin crew, you ought to know at least some of the following western dinning etiquette (do's and don'ts):

  • Before you start eating, place the napkin (the fan-shaped cloth on the main plate) on your lap. Do not use the napkin as a handkerchief or facecloth or use it to clean your cutlery. Please do not button the napkin to your shirt like you see the cowboys do in the movies.
  • Soup is to be spooned away from you and not towards you. It is to be taken with a soup spoon.......( no. 6 in the picture) Please don't drink from your bowl ( ya I know the Japanese do that)
  • The bread is to be broken with your fingers. Do not use knives to cut your bread.
  • Do not dip the bread into the soup or gravy like we usually do with our roti prata (actually more shiok leh...haha)
  • If you use a toothpick, for goodness sake cover your mouth ( don't do what the ah peks usually do at the kopitiam, talking with the toothpick stuck in the open mouth and talk like yaya papaya)
  • Hello, when you chew your food please close your mouth cos no one wants to see that rotten teeth of yours. Also don't make all kind of funny noises when chewing your food ( they got soft background music so no one gonna listen to the noises coming from your mouth)
  • For goodness sake don't talk with food in your mouth.
  • Don't shove more food into your mouth while you are still chewing.
  • Don't be like the Japanese and burp to show appreciation cos it's considered rude.
  • Use fingers for bread and cutlery for your food ok?
  • Please lah don't play with your cutlery or use them to  make your point at the dinning table.
  • If you are not comfortable with the above then you should eat at the kopitiams or hawker center where you are at liberty to do whatever you like.....hahaha.
  • Bon Appetit
Don't follow examples below:

    Googles Ads (Adsense) pay handsomely

What are AdSense possible earnings per-click?

Earnings per-click vary markedly from one site to the next. On average a click could cost anything between $0.03 - $50.00, with most earnings per click been in the lower end of this range.

How much can you earn with AdSense?

    Again this varies depending on a number of factors, these are;
    • Search Engine Ranking (SER). The higher the ranking the more you get per-click per-ad.
    • Website topic and theme. The content and keywords of your site dictate the type of AdSense ads that Google allocates.
    • Traffic levels. This determines how many visitors passes through your site.
    • Number of AdSense ads relating to specific keywords.

    adsense_money

The perfect set of AdSense factors

So the ideal combination of factors that would result in a website that generated good AdSense income would be one that had high search engine ranking, for a number of popular keywords. Even more ideal would be if the keyword relevant for the site was linked to high paying Adwords advertisers.
It’s extremely rare for these combinations of factors to all work towards a Webmasters advantage. But a high SER with one or two of the factors above normally ensures a generous income stream for most sites.
Underlying all these factors is the need for a good constant flow of traffic through your site, without which there can be no AdSense revenue at all.
But to get the high flow of traffic that would be needed for success is not easy at all. This fact becomes apparent when we realize that on average most AdSense websites earn less than $5.00 a day. That’s $150.00 per month and a measly $1800 per year, not much really, is it?

    The facts behind AdSense Earnings
So what levels of traffic is required to generate the average AdSense income? On average most AdSense sites have the following statistics:
    • Make $0.5 per click
    • Get approximately 1000 impressions per day.
    • And we know that most sites have about a 1% CTR value  (Click-through-rates are basically calculated by dividing the number of clicks on ads by the number of impressions of a given site and dividing the resulting value by 100).
    • This then gives us a value of about ten clicks per day per site.
    • Earn $5.00 a day ($150.00 a month)
Not much returns for seemingly reasonable traffic levels and a value of $0.5 per click is slightly generous (the average value is a bit lower). Good AdSense sites on the other hand have statistics along these lines:
    • Earn $0.5 per click
    • Get approximately 10000 impressions per day (High SER’s 1-10 for popular keywords).
    • Have a CTR value of about 5%.
    • Altogether this results in about 500 clicks per day.
    • And $250.00 a day (~$7500.00 a month).
From this we can see that the major difference between the two sites is the level of traffic. Even with a CTR value of 1%, a good site with the above statistics can earn up to $50.00 a day (~$1500.00 per month), which is reasonable AdSense earnings. But not all is lost with average sites... If a webmaster is hardworking enough they could build, up to ten average sized websites. If each earned the average amount of just $5.00 a day then ten, could altogether make more than $1500 a month.
To get a better a idea of possible AdSense earnings use the AdSense calculator.

    The Top AdSense Earners

The few whose sites have achieved the right combination of factors have gone on to become the top highest AdSense earners. This is a list of the top individual AdSense earners of the last few years:

You could also be a top AdSense earner like those listed above by creating a heavily trafficked site. The key to AdSense success lies in building a unique yet popular website. If you create a site that more than lives up to people’s expectations, it will undoubtedly be remembered and will be revisited time and time again. Before you know it you could be receiving cheques from Google in the range of tens of thousands of dollars a month.

Union saboteur earns $10,000 a month

An prominent opposition member in cabin crew lost his seat in the last union election was so bitter that he started to badmouth and sabotaged the union.
He was caught putting in circulars spreading rumours about the union into crew's boxes at cabin control center.
Obviously, the cc union chief was unhappy with the false allegation and asked cc management to investigate the matter.
The culprit's action was recorded on cctv and actions was taken against him. He was let off with a warning.
He has since retired and I was told he went for some courses and obtained a certificate to train people in soft skills etc .I was also told this guy is making about 10k a month after his obtaining his certificate. Wah lau so good pay ah? Then crew should quit being crew and become trainers hor cos crew at most get 1/2 that guy's pay. But then are we all that capable to earn 10k a month?
Hey I got a friend who attended the same course but he didn't earn as much lah.
He told me that sabo guy must be very efficient otherwise he would earn lesser.
Can someone enlighten me cos I also want to earn 10k a month.
After all, I was a cc trainer for 30 years........
