A flight steward and a former stewardess

Last week I had the pleasure of the company of a young steward and a ex stewardess for lunch. It was on two separate occasions. With the steward, it was lunch at The Line and at La Cuisson with the ex stewardess.

The steward was in his early 20s and the ex stewardess was in her mid 20s. The ex stewardess left SQ sometime last year and the steward is in his second year flying with SQ.

There is a similarity amongst the two. Both had bad experiences during their training at SQ. In spite of the set back during their first 2 months with SIA, they remain positive. The steward still loves flying in spite of the shorter overseas nightstop and more work as well as the negative influence of the senior crew. He told me he would leave the airline before the end of his 5 year contract to do his master degree. The lady left SQ and joined a company which she thinks could offer her better job security.

It is refreshing to have a chat with the younger crew. Not only are they positive in their thinking but are good company for an old guy like myself. They are also more entertaining and do not complain like their older colleagues.

I have also learnt a lot from these two and hope to meet up again.

Hi bt,
If I recall is right, I think you had said before the airline industries is a sunset business compare to the past. From the conversation from the two cc/ ex-cc, do u still have the same feeling?

I still think the airline biz is a sunset one. It is no longer as profitable as before, say about 10 to 30 years ago.

Congratulations to these 2 crew as it is not easy to take the step out and be bold,so many crew are stuck and stuck, they tell me the job sux and coy got no welfare but never to anything to find a way out. Their actions are not congruent with what they whine. From the bottom of my heart I wish you guys all the best!
