To improve cc morale, management must not be too punitive

"...Although BT has left the company, he still want to make $ out from CC wannabes and yet at the same time whack the Management/Union".

One of the readers of my blog left this comment about me. I have the prerogative not to publish it but I did. The comment is not encouraging and worse still the person who commented is "Anonymous". But being tolerant of criticism, not only did I publish it but highlight it over here so many more could read it. It's fine with me so long as it is not defamatory. By defamatory I mean for example stating that one is a cheat or a liar etc.
I think my method of handling the above issue is correct. I encourage people not only to comment about the subjects that I blog but about me too. In this manner, people feel they are being heard. Sometimes, the readers have to "let go" and this blog is a platform for them to do so.
SIA cc will not tolerate this sort of things and the highly pressurised crew has no avenue to release their frustration.

CC management should tolerate a bit of dissent which is defined  as "to disagree with the methods, goals etc," Criticism may not be necessarily bad. It may even help the company to improve productivity.
This young generation of crew is unlike those of my era. They would not accept a punitive management but one which will listen to them.
Most of the management people in cc resort to punishment as a way to solve crew's mistakes and problems. It is not right because it will ultimately result in the crew being demoralised and unproductive. One should try and go down to "shop floor" level and listen to the crew. Help them solve their work problems and difficulties. As a matter of fact, a shrewd management is one who will do just that and the end result would better crew morale and higher productivity which is every company's ultimate goal.
Therefore, management has to change its mindset first before they  expect the crew to put their best foot forward.

Yes BT.. In fact, nowsaday crew don't give a hoot about demerit points. To err is human. In the company, so many mistakes have been committed in other departments ,yet no.punishment is being meted out.In CC, u get demerits points for the simplest mistakes you make..Sad to say,the management is not listening cos of one simple reason: KPI..

Missed flt: Get demerit points
Improper documentation: Get demerit points
Late reporting (after 5 mins): Get demerit points
Report sick less than 2 hours before reporting: Get demerit points
The list can go on and on and on....

What is your version of simplest mistake? Are those examples i just mentioned simple to your view?

If you are CIC of the flt and this errant crew happens to be one of those above and you go with minus crew with a full load. Will you be tulan or sympathetic to that crew if he/she get demerit points?

I am sure management makes mistakes and how sure are you that they are not punished? Maybe you should go back to office and see who are those sitting in the same department, holding the same post for the longest time. Let me remind you that ASVP CKW was posted out before he got his confirmation. He was in that hot seat for almost 1 year! Yet current SVP MT was confirmed in less than 6 months.

I do urge you to get facts correct before making sweeping statements. Worse if you are one of the candidates running for the next election coz your "facts" hold no water.

Facts? The fact is not everyone flys 25 years and dont make mistakes! Missed flight, late, reporting sick less than 2 hours.Even office hours people commit all these..I dont understand the rationale why people can fall sick last minute. You mean viral or virus cant hit you anytime? I attended a talk recently and the management staff was late! The whole auditorium was waiting for him and he came in and apologised and said he noted the wrong timing! Mind you,he came in almost 20 mins late! So,he can make mistakes,CC can't? So,should he awarded demerits too? So, everyone who was waiting is not tulan??Under the MOM law, every employee is entitled to sick leave. Why in CC,do you get penalised for MC and get points deducted for Annual appraisal? The system is wrong! You fall sick more than 3 times a year, you kiss ya promo goodbye! I dont believe SVP, even chairman dont fall sick!Do you think they get demerits?
For info, I do not stand for elections and what I posted here are facts..BT,YOU and many CC readers knows the facts .It is people like you whose chose not to face it and be selective about what you wanna know!

Demerit points are needed because of the mentality of some ( I said some, and not all) cabin crew. These are the juveniles with no sense of responsibility. If not for the demerit points, all hell will break lose. I don't see tech crew needling demerit points to keep them in check...It all boils down to the mentality of the individual....Btw , I am not tech crew lah...

Demerit points are needed because of the mentality of some ( I said some, and not all) cabin crew. These are the juvenile idiots with no basic sense of responsibility. If not for the demerit points, all hell will break lose; unless any genius here can think of a better system...like rewarding crew for doing what they are Not supposed to do in the first place. I don't see tech crew needling demerit points to keep them in check...It all boils down to the mentality of the individual.... Reference to the management staff being late, it is because they are cabin crew after all...hee hee..Btw , I am not tech crew..

The management staff was a cabin crew with a juvenile cabin crew mentality ....ha hah ha ha......lol

Why demerit pts are issued is more of operational reason and responsibilty.if no disciplinary action is taken, then all apnn and oz flt will cease to take off as all will report sick last minute. Plus all you cabin crew dogs need a stick to keep you in place.

BT is doing a fine job blogging. There is much more that I would like to add on but will put them on hold for the time being. Let me now take this opportunity to call upon all bloggers to read the open letter written by Ms. Catherine Lim addressed to the Prime Minister. Her letter, in full, can be viewed at her blog via google.

Of coz I make mistakes and I am human after all! To survive 25 years in the airline, you must also know how to play their (company) game too. Unless you are those "yes sir, yes sir, 3 bags full type, complain only when something is not fair coz it only affects the minority.

Nobody says that you can't fail sick either. Sick go see doctor and get MC. Isnt that simple enough?

"I attended a talk recently and the management staff was late! The whole auditorium was waiting for him and he came in and apologised and said he noted the wrong timing! Mind you,he came in almost 20 mins late! So,he can make mistakes,CC can't? So,should he awarded demerits too? So, everyone who was waiting is not tulan??"

So and he is late, the audience accepted his explanation and the talk goes on. Why didnt you voice out to him that he is late and his apology is not accepted? So what sort of punishment he should receive? Is there a guideline in their handbook for demerits?

My point been, they don't have those punitive guidelines, but cabin crew has it. Too punitive in your view? Join management.

"Under the MOM law, every employee is entitled to sick leave. Why in CC,do you get penalised for MC and get points deducted for Annual appraisal? The system is wrong! You fall sick more than 3 times a year, you kiss ya promo goodbye! I dont believe SVP, even chairman dont fall sick!Do you think they get demerits?"

Yes you are right about MOM. I would encourage you to do some research and get your facts in order before "shooting"

-> The employee has informed or attempted to inform the employer of his/her absence within 48 hours. Otherwise, the employee will be deemed to be absent from work without permission or reasonable excuse.

http://www.mom.gov.sg/employment-practices/leave-and-holidays/Pages/sick-leave.aspx

So if you have a reason you are on MC and those taking MC for turns, weekends and public holidays. Why fear you won't get promoted?

"For info, I do not stand for elections and what I posted here are facts..BT,YOU and many CC readers knows the facts .It is people like you whose chose not to face it and be selective about what you wanna know!"

Hmmm... Selective. Only when ppl making excuses or not sharing the entire "story" then I will be selective. You may know SOME facts but only half the story.

Why do you hope to break someone's rice bowl or spend money to pop champagne?

Did 5 years flying senior steal your money, f*** your girlfriend/wife, jam your promotion, spread rumors about you?

Or you think you are more senior than him and "cyber bully" him? This will only show how mature and what you would do to hit below the belt to someone.

Bo pian, I guess have to change my methods in this changing world. Thanks to TONY, I have another 16 more years of employment to buck up.

Thank you for agreeing with me.

Bad etiquette to quote names in the clear on this forum...imagine if someone did the same to you, and you are unaware, and unable to defend yourself...esp if something was said against your favour...

Interesting debates i see here. MC within 48 hours is permissible under MOM and MOM never states cannot take MC on holiday and weekendsPardon me but why CC get demerit points for MC and it affects promotion leh?Not right what.. :p

Anonymous said...

Between a cc who does not take mc and one who only took 1 day which one will u promote if everything being equal?
