Russia may ban European carriers from its airspace

The European Union or EU is expected to announce shortly whether further sanctions will take effect now or be put on hold against Russia for its alleged involvement in the fighting in Ukraine. The EU has said this will depend on how the situation develops on the ground.

However, Russian Prime Minister Dimitry Medvedev warned that Moscow would impose a ban on European airlines from flying through its airspace. If this happens  the airspace ban "could drive many struggling airlines into bankruptcy", he told a Russian daily.
Many think the airspace closure would not affect airlines like SIA and other non-European carriers. So is this good news for SIA since it has a 5 weekly flights to Houston via Moscow?
