Discharge your "duties fearlessly" an advice from a senior crew

It may be true that some of these young crew today are better educated. I would like to add that degrees and doctorates do not make anyone better educated. On the contrary, they make people more literate. No senior crew should feel out of place when it comes to dealing with this new breed. If these youngsters feel that they are that good, they should leave and see for themselves what the job market out there in the streets is like.

We are different from them in that all of us treasured our jobs and very often have gone the extra mile for all our paxs. We cannot afford to let our guard down, failing which we shall inherit the risk of falling into the same trap as in other deplorable airlines where their CC are allowed to talk back, argue, report late and even snub at their paxs and senior crew.

The SIA Cabin Crew image is all about personal grooming, commitment, punctuality, discipline, clarity, etiquette, professionalism, putting paxs before self, versatility, humility, initiative, friendly and firm when necessary.

No amount of feedback to management should deter any senior crew from discharging his duties fearlessly. Be prepared to walk alone overseas and to remain exemplary at all times.

BT: Due to the popularity of this topic, I've brought it forward for further discussion.

Post well written and sincere. I agree we seniors should not be discouraged just because of a few errant juniors. Keep pressing and be loyal to the company. Adopt a positive attitude and don't be cowed by those juniors.

6 years flying senior says:

I worked with very nice seniors and also very nice juniors. It is about how you want to make things work. As a junior, when I report for flights, I learned to "go with the flow". Always size the seniors and ranking crew observe their pattern and style so that we can work more smoothly together as a team.

However on the other hand, the coy is not receptive to the new generation and still does not move with time. It is ironical how the coy's advertisement nowadays encourage customers to take selfies in their promo ads, engage with customers in facebook, but press down on their own crew and colleagues using social media. It is also weird why cannot use mobile phone on the move when it is meant to be MOBILE in the first place. When juniors explainations is deemed not apologetic to the managers and office people.

If only we can work hand in hand, but there is always a line drawn between cabin and office and control, how sad. Team work, my ass.

Hokkien got one poem:

mouth say below shiok

Ps: my angmoh no good, dont hamtum my grammar hor...

What a nitwit and speak volume of your mentality.
Always young and marketable?
Yup if only he or she will live to a ripe age and enjoy the golden years like BT.
Go glorify your days while you can.

Anonymous 2....you write like a prostitute. Sounds like you a holder of SPMs. Show me another company where its graded staff can afford to live in landed homes in the same neighbourhood as directors and the higher echelon. You sound like an odd ball with no place to go, defunt of ideas and you ought to brush up your grammar, spelling and diction.

RIGHT ATTITUDE MAKES A DIFFERENCE : EXCERPT FROM A MALAYSIAN NEWSPAPER WRITTEN BY A BUMI DATED JAN 26 2015.

A good attitude can lift someone's mood. Recently, I went to a private hospital and was overwhelmed with the way the employees greet and treat patients. They were all ready, helpful and efficient in providing good service.

Customers deserve the best service. Hence, it is essential for workers to provide good service, not only when patients seek medical care, but also when dealing with the public.

Nowadays, it is not uncommon to see those behind the counter wear a fake smile. With good education, they should be smart professionals who are able to attract customers to enjoy the service. Nothing wrong with education, but something may be wrong with those who pursue something.....some people enter university only for the sake of graduating and getting a job....

On 2 educated morons....good post and true story. The pax who complained about his 5 minute late reporting had been told off in simple English by SIA that boarding had commenced 40 minutes prior to departure. The door was already closed with 5 minutes for take-off or was already on the runway. Hold your heads high friends! SIA share is still on the rise at $12.70 at midday.....

Hi seniors

discharge your duties fearlessly - you are right to say that. I am a two years flying junior and I DO give my best every single flight. sadly, I still get zapped and nagged at because my staff number is the most unremarkable in your galley.

i do have a lot of respect for seniors who are kind, humble, and just as appreciative of us as we are of them when we have a great set of crew. I don't mind being corrected, and I respond positively when the correction comes from the right place.

but discharging your duties fearlessly doesn't mean picking on someone just because we are junior crew, or because we look young, or whatever other reasons you may have. i don't know your motivation for going to work after having flown from 15-35 years, but I still enjoy flying most of the time so stop giving us hell. FOR NO REASON.

and that other commenter was right...... why draw lines within cabin crew division, when we already see lines drawn between cabin crew, office, and control?

regards,
2 years flying junior

2 years flying junior. You are right to state that discharging one's duty fearlessly doesn't mean picking on someone just because of juniority. Senior crew have a duty to correct mistakes or service lapses. This must be done with patience and professionaly, going on issues and avoiding criticising subordinates on personal matters. This is in line with organisations where a chain of command exists and SIA is no exception. The era of ragging and nagging is over!

Equally important is the need for us at all levels to keep up with change and to make necessary adjustments accordingly. Ultimately, our crew must feel happy and committed to come to work and to deliver the best of service that we all have come to love and respect....the SIA brand to our loyal paxs who have been supporting us in all these years.

Thanks for your acknowledging the seniors. Many of them have joined the ranks of the silver generation. Uncle BT still looks good.

Things will never change,it has always be divide and rule.that is the number 1rule laid down by our founding father.cheers

THE FOUNDING FATHER OF SINGAPORE HAD NEVER ADVOCATED DIVIDE AND RULE. TO ALL THOSE IN DOUBT, FOUNDER OF SINGAPORE IS SIR STAMFORD RAFFLES. MAKE NO MISTAKE!

Raffles Town Plan
Raffles conceived a town plan to remodel Singapore into a modern city. The plan consisted of separate areas for different ethnic groups and provision of other facilities such as roads, schools and lands for government buildings. In October 1822, a Town Plan Committee was formed by Raffles to oversee the project

Does this sounds like divide and rule ?

" Does this sound like divide and rule? " You need to go back to Singapore's history and have all the relevant facts tabulated before passing judgement. Raffles already had a vision that Singapore was destined to be successful and must have taken this into account in his plans.

This is not a bad forum for all bloggers to contribute their views....any takers???

An example of divide and rule can be seen in Africa where race and colour segregation are exploited.
