24 years after the SQ 117 hijack, for steward Ted there is still no closure

"After the hijack, company had took me off from all my flights and i was told to take as many days off as i want....only when i am ready than i shall report for work.....sounded so good yah....they even arrange counselling and psychiatrist shall i require..

I stayed at home for the next two days; with much disturbance calls from the press, friends and relatives. I was feeling stressed and decided to return to work....company was surprised with my request....i was then referred to higher CCE for approval, on the same token, i made a request for a Jumbo flight.(ONE LONG FLIGHT ONLY) so i could be away to avoid being hassle by the press.... R.Poon was in charge at that time and a straight “NO” was the reply....i  was puzzled with the rejection and demand for an explanation...i was  told that if company will to entertain my request;, the rest of the crew would do the same...i was furious, even if all the crew had the same request..Apart from 2 were hospitalised, cant they do anything for the 7 of us? That was as much the company would stretch for the crew..... On speaking to DCC; i was hoping to know if there is any form of token given to the crew as it would be normal for any American airline to make up a sum of compensation...No surprise is a NO for the reply...”it was unfortunate that such things happened, but it is what we call occupational hazards”. replied DCC...to all readers, if you were in my shoes.."

BT: Since we are celebrating SG50 this year, I hope the current cabin crew management will offer Ted some kind of closure. After all, Ted was kicked and punched by the hijackers. He was almost thrown out of the plane too. As for the other cabin crew they are not contactable. Perhaps they just want to move on and forget about the nasty incidence. As for the pilots, the SOF personnel and others who were involved in helping end the crisis were invited to the Istana and given awards.
As for Ted, he wrote to me the whole story of the hijacking from his perspective and was still bitter towards cabin crew management for the way he was treated as stated above.
I am still in contact with Ted and it was through my blog that the media/film maker was able to contact him and asked him to work with them to produce the SQ 117 Hijack documentary.

A note from Ted aka Toby a few minutes ago:

"dear all, thank you for your concerns and well wishes, I am doing well as an interior designer now, moving forward, I hope each ad everyone should cherish what we have and always count our lucky stars, NO ONE should go through what the crew has gone through on the hijack."

BT: FYI, the Hijack of SQ 117 story written by Toby aka Ted had been read about 66,000 times since it was published in this blog.

Ted has left SQ many years ago. I do not know what he is doing now.

The anti-terrorist squad was formed more than thirty years ago. It was part of our defence strategy to combat terrorism, make our country safe and to put in place a squad that was trained to respond to emergencies. This was put to the test when terrorists struck at SQ 117.

Ted Ang's account on this blog regarding his encounter with DCC and R Poon is shocking and shameful.

When my wife was giving birth to my first child, that R Phoon did not even allow me to take my annual leave. As a result my child was delivered when I was away overseas. The whole cc management sucks!

On BT's post about SG50 : Not only for Ted but also for the other hijacked crew, including the pilots. Some form of recognition perhaps.....

counter terrorists huh?
bunch of pakis with fire
crackers and cutlery set

Anonymous said...

Anonymous above...the terrorists were all given a chance to surrender. MFA rang (PM) Benazir Bhutto at her home and had wanted to speak to her. Her servant who answered the call, said that she was asleep. There was then nothing else left to do but to storm the aircraft.

They were terrorist, no matter what weapon on them or even with their bare hands. Fire crackers will burn the aircraft down and a cutlery can easily kill you. Push you down the aircraft with your head first will kill you or permanently disable you. Take no prisoners, we do not want to see another hostage to be burned alive like the Jodan Pilot. Are you trying to discredit the SOF or the terrorist in your comment ? Remember, talk is easy but action is another whole new ball game.

Pilots, SAF personned and others were invited to the Istana and given awards? What about the cabin crew?

6 years flying senior says:

I always agree with BT view:
good coy managed by wrong people, usually sad to say , it is our own people, the CC mgt. Recently, just saw some of our cc managers who are ex cc at control.
We a group of non rankings walked pass her and greeted her, she dont even look at us. It is really sad because she is an ex cc as well. Now maybe she think she is god.

best regards,

Give medals for? Hiding under the galley ah?

It certainly apears that the CC from SQ117 had not been invited to the Istana? Can anyone shed some light on this? Invitations to the Istana originate from the President's office.
