Short of crew and yet choosy

The flights leave with minus crew and yet choosy at interviews. Shortage of crew means lower standard of service. Pax would have to wait longer for the meals and other services. Crew would have to work doubly hard. To make matter worse, a cc has to be stationed in the cockpit whenever any of the 2 pilots want to leave the cockpit to pee or poo (this is a requirement by the aviation authorities). In spite of the critical shortage, management still want to be choosy and is taking their time to recruit cc. What do you expect to get for a 1.3k job? Graduates and beauty queens?

There was a time when we were desperately short of cc and our managers instructed us to shortlist as many candidates as possible. We even took in people with  "N" level and shorten the training period from 4 months to 2 months. Candidates who were 1 cm short wasn't an issue. Some of the newbies did not even do their SNY (observation)flights. They operated as full fledged cc as soon as they passed their training.

Today the people running the show is taking their sweet time conducting interview after interview and booting people out for the slightest reasons. One candidate wrote that she stood at 158.4 but the interviewers measured her as 157.6 cc (min required height is 158 cm). She passed the "reached test" and the first round of the interview but was not allowed to proceed with the interview because she was short of 0.4 cm in height. Another one email me this:  "I am given fit for flying during the medical check up by the doctor. But I received a letter from them stating that my application is unsuccessful".   What pettiness!

Conducting repeated interviews would incur more expenses and time. It is time that cc management be realistic and get as many people in as possible because the operating crew are overstretched. In fact, this is one of the reasons the crew are resigning by the hundreds.

SIA share price has plummeted to $10.26 losing as much as 19 cents as at 10.26 am this morning.

Latest update: The lady whom I mentioned above about being booted due her height have now submitted this comment....... 1556 hr

I have no need to lie, I'm not going to gain anything out of it.. When I checked my height thrice at NUH, Woodlands Polyclinic and at a private clinic near my house, and my height was between 158.3cm to 158.4cm however at SIA interview the first time when it was measured I was 157.3cm but I knew it was not accurate so I asked her to please measure again and this time it was 157.6cm..
How can my height suddenly increase by 0.3cm compared to the first measurement?? I asked the girl if I could please try the reach test and I touched the red marking the first shot itself and she said I passed the reach test but I still cannot go to Round 3..
If you all are going to talk about standards and stuff, the girl stationed to measure the heights was not even dressed appropriately.. She was wearing a tight black flare mini skirt and a white crop top showing her belly which made most of us think she was some candidate's friend probably around 22 years old only..
You can read tons of other stories of girls who were in the same situation as me but some made it because the person taking their height made them pass due to reach test but mine was just plain bad luck..
I understand that the management should take in the correct set of people fit for the job but you should also understand that not everyone wanted to be a cabin crew since young and had a passion for flying.. Most just want the job for the money, traveling and it is just an advantage for them because they are tall..
Height is not the only that matters but the passion, intellectual and communicative abilities of the crew.. The interviewers who interviewed me at Round 1 were senior crew people around the age of 45 yet a 22 year old who was not dressed properly rejected me even after passing the reach test.. I'm saying all this because I'm not going to gain anything by lying about my experience.. Just me sharing my experience that's all..

Mgt would rather hire good and qualified candidates rather than taking mediocre quality just to make up the numbers.
As you had mentioned, the old systen of hiring N levels and flying straight after graduation had obviously had shortcomings. Eg crew who cannot hold a decent conversation or dont know what to do.
If Mgt had maintained this old system of recruiting, you will also have some things to say abt Mgt. Most likely you will criticise Mgt for lpwering standards and now lead to decline of standards again.
As for the crew who is short by the mere centimetres. How do you know the crew is telling the truth? The standard measurement is applied for all crew. If she missed by even 0.0001mm, the truth is she still fail. Furthermore for all you know, she might have fail in other areas and height is just a convenient excuse not to take her in.
Cabin crew do not earn 1.3k. If its 1.3k, nobody will join. They are paid 4k-7k (depending on rank) for a klkk cbl easy peesy no brainer job.

where got time to "hold a decent conversation"? lucky if we got time to shit. short of crew make us work doubly hard and punish us for small things. sack those chia liow bees in the office with fat salary first

Ya lor. Usual conversation are:
1. Makan already?
2. Roster or standby callup?
3. Where you stay in sgp?
4. Hows your roster?
Thats provided we even have time to ask the above.

SIA go into liquidity and close down bestest! Let those scums go and collect tray at foodcourt
Oh.. how I hate cabin crew

Based on BT is advocating, management should let any Tom Dick and Mary join cabin crew.
You think management like to conduct interviews every so often to find the right people. Thats because they care for the rest of the crew and company.
Getting in the right people will raise the standard and bring in more business for the company.
With short term and shallow thinking like BT, no wonder he is laid off during the retrenchment.

Agree with the first one. Its also not easy for Mgt. If anyhow choose, u all will also say anyhow no standard.

Sometimes , we would like to think that we are better and more capable than the other person doing the job. But the truth is, if we are given this same task, we may not have a solution or make things better too.

In life its like this. If the person judged you as such, you are subjected to his/her decision.
Eg in job interviews, if the interviewer dont like your face or your answers, you are not selected for the job.
My friend used to work with SIA, kena from some crew and subjected to disciplinary action. No proof and yet he got the boot.
I recently went for a pre employment checkup. The doctor deemed me as high blood pressure and I lost my job after 3 rounds of interview and written tests. All this while my bp is normal and yet he say I am hypertension.
Hence, I hope you can accept the decision made by those people who decide our fate. Like it or not, we cant challenge them.

Based on your story, I think the maon issue is not about your height. Its your attitude problem. The first post had nailed the problem correctly i.e they used the height difference just as a convenient excuse to kick you out.
They will not use the reason 'attitude problem' to delist you.
Search your soul- were you rude to the insignificant girl measuring your height? Did you display a sour face? Did you show a sense of self entitlement and self importance?
Even if they kelong and let you pass through to next round, you will be axe in the next round also or wont last long working as a cc.
Accept the fact and move on

"With short term and shallow thinking like BT, no wonder he is laid off during the retrenchment.."

BT: FYI I was not retrenched. I asked for early retirement when I was 45 yrs old but was refused. Again at aged 55 SIA refused to retire me. Then in 2003 at 57 yrs, due to SARS SIA agreed to let me go together with some 18 of my colleagues. So get your facts right before you comment.
