Annual leave buyback scheme for cabin crew

According to a reliable source, SIA is facing a severe shortage of cabin crew in spite of frantically trying to recruit more crew. Therefore, as a short term solution, SIA has offered cabin crew of all ranks including foreign crew to voluntarily sell their annual leave back to the company. This leave buyback scheme (LBS) is for the month of November and December this year.
The management is willing to pay the following rates:

IFS ---- -----$200 a day
Chief--------$170 a day
Leading-----$130 a day
FS/S---------$100 a day.

I was also given to understand that 20 unsuccessful chief stewards and chief stewardesses at the interviews for the promotional post of IFS were recalled and handed the promotion due a severe shortage of IFS.

Cabin crew management is based on reactive style.
In their view ( which is very narrow ) saving money is far more
productive ( debatable ).

The total cost to pay employees to compensate forgoing their annual leave
is very, very cheap, as the profits is much more. And this cost is contained
within the budget year. ( will not be surprised if there is a surplus ).

The union has agreed in principle behind the curtains. If not, also the price.

This is not good human capital practice. It reduces the employee to a money grabbing digit, though managers will be quick to respond ( reaction again ) that they have a choice.

But choice does not remove the notion that they view the employee not as an asset but a vendor of sorts. ( but terms dictated by management )
Unfortunately, 99% of employees are always price takers.

And to promote employees to the next rank so easily demonstrate that managers create
obstacles just for the fun of it. I cannot think of a more inefficient, unproductive management than this!

I am indeed amazed that these managers are still employed and will gain every cent of their bonuses derived from the relentless cost savings. Incredible KPI.
Highly elitist circle.. I congratulate them for their abilities to preserve their bubble over so many decades!

Not fair to those who got promoted because they passed and also,passengers won't know who are the rejects who got promoted.Not good HR practice! Even the coffee shop is run better than this.Cannot simply promote people!
SIA management being paid lots just to come up with stupid ideas.

(CCEs are all expandable though.. its the managers that enjoy everlasting life )

If I got the choice I would choose family over money. Strengthen your bonds with your children, grandparents,mother, father before you are unable.Way back I was talking to ex CO and we talked. He said that there were payoff to the then union. 7000 ?Position re-served for the union rep ?Lots of perks like long flight to get 2.5 IFA. No turn around. Lots of groupies under protection. On board all willing to work on their behalf. All powerful, the carbal of unionist hoping to take over, to get the goodies the comes along, it comes with the territory.Untouchable.What happened to Desmond in Bali Hai.?Driven to desperation because no promo. I can't say.

You cannot say that they are rejects. The environment is such that the "Protection." ,those whose home address is CC ,those unmarried due to "ay", disadvantage to those with children, onself write compliments," years ago Xavier", everflght got compliments, zero in on one pax for the whole fl.
Those borderline could have not gave their time ,soul and spirit enough. So don't ever look down on them.!

Dear Mr. Luke,

SIA in general employs 800-1000 new cabin crew per year. They expressed their intentions to employ even more this year. Why would they still be experiencing a shortage of hands?

Is the resignation rate so high? What's your opinion on this? Is the Union's new policy on the increase in pay after the completion of the compulsory 2 years bond; standardization of the pay per hour regardless of long/short haul flights; abolishment of the layover allowances; still not enough to retain the new cabin crews? I understand that the new salary scheme has been enforced since 2015 although it was only released in the newspaper a few months ago.

BT still needed for opinions ? Great! But i can inform you, the norm is to leave after the Bonus payout. That is from the horse mouth. Why do so and get less and when at the period concerned the Purser give blood sweat and tears at the job. In these lean time, and challenging environment, zika, terrorist at stations overseas. Preservation of self overseas most of all. That is my take.

Cannot say for sure that 20 CS/CSS were called back and promoted to IFS. If it is true, then it only goes to show that Mgt has gone to the dogs. Turkish Airways has been voted the sixth time in a row by Skyrax as the top Euro Airline.

Promoted even when they dont qualify?
That explains why the service has gone down the drain.
A friend recently took the business class and during meal time was served by an IFSS. When served the bread, instead of asking using her mouth if he would like some bread, IFSS just showed the bread and gestured at passenger to take it, no words no smile nothing. My friend took the bread and ask if they have some honey to go along with it. She replied I'll come back to you...but she never did. Cabin wasn't full by the way.
And this is just one of the many encounters.
SIA is going down...

Good comment. This is just one of the many blunders committed by those in the office. Promotion must always be based on competence. It looks like the department concerned did not know that there was a shortage of IFS. Pathetic! What has happened to the ITF? Information, Training and Feedback???? There was one IFS promotional exercise some years ago where not a single Malay was selected. Another, only one Malay made it.

Some years ago, a management staff's email was intercepted and was called up to show cause. He had written to a friend of his to complain about his salary. This example goes to show the vigilance and efficiency of an enlightened management who took swift preemptive action. Maybe the entire cabin crew and HR divisions ought to be thoroughly fumigated once and for all.

Promotion now is based on your address (STC), ECA participation, courses you take ina year.
It is not about how good you are with your customers but how good you are with the management people.
Look at Sex C. Do you think he give a damn about the crew morale? He just want the crew to give him recognition. He is the epitome of dwellers of STC.
We need middle management who love the airlines, the frontliners, customers. This will bring SQ to soar high.
They always teach the Senior crew to lead by example but they themselves are not taking this advice. Hypocrites.
That is why we have no more sincerity in service delivery. Everybody just follow procedures and just VR when there is problem.
And no one read the stack of VRs if there is no customers writing in.

They do not know how to measure crew's performance with customers.
Using appraisals per sector is a very bias tool and prone to be neutral.

So they use other criteria which they can measure:

1. How many days MC
2. How many missed flights
3. How many courses signed up
4. How many ECA signed up
5. How many complaints specified by name/sector
6. How many "poor" appraisals
7. How many disciplinary events.. ( late reporting, grooming, smoking, DI,CI etc )

Yes, look closely... not a single item measuring how you served with a smile, interacted with pax, helped with luggage etc. These are covered in the appraisal forms yet, it is not singled out but lumped together as a whole and the total result is presented as a percentage.

So, tell me.... is it an accurate measure for customer service or a measure of discipline and compliance?

This is the reason why the standard of " a great way to fly" sucks.

They are fully aware of this cause & effect.
They choose to ignore it and embrace discipline as the golden key to unlock excellent customer service. If you believe that..... mati leow

Flight to where? Short or long.?Morning or evening ?Perhaps the Ifss missheard you.Front of the plane or back of the plane. The ambient noise level is high in certain locations. One swallow means sick swallow ,while the rest still on the way .Probably GPS made in Chink.Probably as Crew in charge, have lots of report to fill in. Finally would you think the same if the person is somewhere somewhat related to you. Probably the next reunion dinner I would give a glare together with the eclair. Or your daughter is the server. Want the best, you maid provide. One miss honey ,and you are jumping like a spoiled brat. Reminded me of the credit card co that behaves like high and mighty. Now all are gone, humbled and lower then my shoes. Your days might come,if you got choke on board, who is going to rescue you ?They are on board to do everything for the passenger. My take.

I'm sure if your friend was some white dude,the iFSS would have been friendlier. The crew tend to be nicer to ang moh. That's why some have given up on SQ and fly EK instead.Having rejects will make things worse.

What you asked initially is irrelevant because BT had already put up the reminder that he will delete posts he seems inappropriate.If you had seen the reminder,you will know why the posts were deleted. The story of Constance and Beatrice had started out in the section on the SIA steward who was arrested for a drug offence in Bali. It makes one feel that this freak is either acting like an absent minded professor trying to grope his way in the dark or is a weird wizard grappling between fantasy and the Twilight Zone. It is not desirable to find out how he had found his way into unchartered territory.
