Crew safety training

The are somewhat similiar to the facilities used in SIA,MAS and other airlines in terms of safety training for the crew.In all my years with the airline, I have gone through the procedures (recurrent training)umpteen times. To be precise, we have to renew our safety efficiency license once a year. Should the crew failed any of the test(repeatedly),they would not be allowed to fly.In the safety training for new as well as serving crew (pilots & cabin crew)we went thru fire fighting,operation of the slides for crash landing as well as ditching,the ability to rescue "passengers" in water as well, and first aid. For the newbies the whole safety courses would be about 2 weeks and for the yearly renewal for operating crew, 2 days.The course for the operating crew is to determine whether they are still current and fit to help passengers in case of emergency on board the flight. If they failed, they would be given a chance to repeat. On failing again,they would be "grounded" and go thru the 2 week course with the newbies.
BT: Gossips....all those 40 years, 1 life guard and 1 firefighter instructor had been accused of molesting 2 stewardesses while they underwent the courses with them. It's amazing because thousands of girls had undergone the training and in the early days, only donned swimsuits and bikinis and yet only 2 instructors were accused of molestation. Don't blame the instructors cos the girls were sexily clothed and most were young too. I can't remember what happened to the 2 instructors. Don't know whether they were found guilty or not.

Today,Greenwich Mall which is situated in Seletar Hills area was not fully open because of the Chinese New Year Holiday. Coffee Beans,Cold Storage,Toast Box and a few shops were opened. We had breakfast at Coffee Beans. Breaky for 2 in the pictures with free flow of coffee until 11am cost around $20. This Mall is about 5 minutes walk from our home. It had just opened a month ago. For info there are about SIA 20 pilots and half a dozen cabin crew living in Seletar Hills which is in the northern eastern part of Singapore.

I would like to share with you a ratherinteresting observation on the origins of the Chinese New Year celebrations.

The origins seem to have started in Africa. Is that shocking to you? Just hang on and read on.

The mythology about the Chinese New Year has itthat on the New Year eve, amonster called "Nian" lurks outside your house waiting to devour youwhen you come out. That is why you aresupposed to stay at home and partake the "Family ReunionDinner". On the exterior doorposts you paste "Red Paperwith Words of Blessing" and a "Red Cloth over the lintel(upper frame)to frighten Nian away, because Nian is fearful of red colour. Then at midnight, "Nian will passover" or go away from your house. The people then come out of their house to celebrate the “passing overof Nian” by praying to the God of Heaven and burning crackers. The crackers will frighten Nian furtheraway. The event of Nian passing over iscalled "Guo Nian ", marks the beginning of the New Year.

Now if you go back to the Bible in the time ofMoses when the Israelites were slaves in Egypt; Moses was called by God to tellthe Pharaoh to let the Israelites go the desert to worship God. Each time the Pharaoh refused, God wouldpunish Pharaoh and the Egyptians by sending plagues. Finally God gave Pharaoh the ultimatum thatif Pharaoh refused one more time, God will send his angel of death to visitEgypt at midnight and all the firstborn including the animals in Egypt woulddie.

But God prescribed the antidote for the Israeliteswith the following instructions:

1. You are to stay indoor, kill a male lamb in each family and roast thelamb and eat every part of it with bitter herb. (And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, andunleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.) Ex:12:8

2. The lamb’s blood is to be painted on the doorposts and the lintel, sothat when the angel of death visits Egypt at midnight and seeing the bloodpainted doorposts and lintel, he will pass over your house and you and yourhousehold will be saved.

(And theyshall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upperdoor post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.) Ex:12:7

3. And it came to pass, that atmidnight the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from thefirstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captivethat was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle. Ex:12:29

Now can you see the parallel?

1. The reunion dinner and the eating of the lamb in the house.

2. The red paper and cloth and the lamb's blood on the door post and lintel.

3. Nian passing over at midnight and the death angel passing over atmidnight.

4. The Chinese came out to pray to the God of Heaven at midnight, while theIsraelites the following day left for the wilderness to sacrifice to the LORDGod.

The Jewish Passover Feast is a celebration ofliberation from their slavery in Egypt. There is a great possibility that the Chinese New Year was borrowed fromthe Jewish Passover. And since the wholestory begun in Egypt and Egypt is in the African Continent, it follows that theorigins of the Chinese New Year is from Africa.

ChunJie and PassoverSpring Festival

The Chinese NewYear is known as ChunJie which means Spring Festival in Mandarin. But the NewYear usually takes place some time during late January or middle of February.This year it falls on 23 January.

What I findanomalous is that neither the end of January nor beginning of February isanywhere near Spring, and yet it is called the Spring Festival. This year thePassover is 6 April to 13 April. Could it be that the ‘Spring Festival’ term isborrowed from the Jewish term, ‘Hag HaAviv’ meaning ‘the Spring Festival’,which is the Passover.

And whilst theJewish Passover is celebrated beginning on the 15^th day of themonth, the Chinese celebrate their New Year for 15 days, culminating with theLantern Festival. Again, the similarity of 15^th and 15 days. Couldancient communication suffered some distortions, when 15^th day was mistakenfor 15 days?

Met a senior steward Tim (not his real name) this afternoon at a coffee shop. He was alone,drenched in the heavy monsoon rain. He placed his crash helmet on one of the vacant chairs. So I thought he must be riding a motor bike and couldn't continue his journey because of the inclement weather.He lit a cigarette and as he started to smoke he took out his mobile phone and made a call. I let him finished his phone call and tapped him on his shoulder.Tim was surprised to see me. The last time we spoke was about ten years ago. We recognised each other and shook hands.I got him a cup of coffee and we started to talk. As you may know, our conversation was about lives in the airlines. I had left the airlines about eight years ago and it was nice to meet someone who could tell me what's going on in cabin crew.From the stories Tim told me I could tell there was helluva lot that's going on in cabin crew. As he related to me the stories of how hard he had to work to support his kids, I felt sorry for him. I could see the sadness in his eyes as he related the life he was going through. Life isn't as good as when I was there. It's an "in" thing for most people all over the world to work harder to survive these days as compared to the past. Resources are in short supply everywhere and there are more inhabitants. The cost of living is rising with each day and people's earnings are being eroded by this thing call inflation.This is a hard fact of life.Tim became more calm as he inhaled the smoke from his cigarette. As he sipped his coffee,he became more talkative. Tim told me about the various incidences of crew getting into trouble. Tim related to me about a chief steward who drank so much alcohol that he began to abuse a couple of stewardesses during one of the night stops in the Middle East. He also broke a couple of the hotel bar glasses. Since the hotel security could not handle the situation, the local police was asked to help. The case was reported to the company and now the steward is awaiting a disciplinary enquiry. If found guilty of misconduct and bringing the airline into disrepute, he could be fired.
There was another case of a chief steward who was charged for upgrading his colleague to a higher class during her positioning as a passenger. In addition, this chief steward was also charged for molesting a junior stewardess. Not to jump the gun but I think his days with the airline are numbered.
Tim also talked about a steward who went to his ex-girlfriend's department and create a scene. The manager was furious and lodged a report with the cabin crew division. The case is still pending and if found to be guilty of the charge, he would probably be demoted to a lower rank.
Tim also told me about other cases of misconduct and he said there would be more to come.
I asked Tim why there were so much misconduct amongst the crew. His answer was " they were frustrated and overworked" .
I told him to take it easy and don't create any mischief . He also loves alcohol and over indulging might get him into serious trouble during his night stops.
He was a little more positive when I told him that I heard William Koh is now the head of cabin crew. He could be another "Yap Kim Wah" who lifted up the morale and spirit of the cabin crew when everyone else failed in the 1980s.
Good luck Bill and I hope to hear more positive news from the crew about the situation in cabin crew. May the year of the Dragon bring good tidings for the airline as a whole.

People come here for various reasons. The majority comes here to read my stories especially about lives in SIA. Out of this group, many like to read about sexy and juicy stories of crew and passengers. Some of this people were disappointed because not all the stories here are about sex.
The second group are mostly crew,both cabin and technical. They are most likely the ones who would leave a comment or two. To them I would like to say a big thank you ( does not matter if the comments are bad or good cos if bad uncle would straightaway delete them...hehehe, advantage to McEnroe)!
Another group are usually the cabin crew hopefuls, you know the ones who die die also want to join SIA as stewards and stewardesses. They would trawl the Internet looking for free advices and free e-guides to assist them pass the cabin crew interview. To this group, I have this to say to them: Freebies can't really help much. Free advices and guides as well as lessons uploaded on YouTube won't help much. To those wannabes whose chances are above average I suppose all those freebies may help a little. If you have an above average chance of passing the cc interview you actually don't need much help. But then how does one knows whether he or she has an above average chance? What is your yard stick or shall I say by whose or what standard are you using to measure yourself?
This is where the experienced and knowledgeable ex cabin crew interviewers come in. Don't go and get advices from those "mmm sum mmm sei"(Cantonese saying meaning the unqualified types)self proclaimed experts. Don't even think of buying their so called guides or books or programs. You would probably be confused or given the wrong information.
Ok Ok it not just the cc wannabes I want to talk about here.
The next group of visitors to my blog are the airline management people. They appointed one or two officers in the office to monitor what I blog. They aren't just kaypos but serious about the contents of my blog. Given half the chance, they wanna sue me if I defame them or the airline. Alamak "tan ku la" cos uncle don't anyhow talk cock. What I post here would be backed by evidence or witnesses (of course la a few had already kicked the bucket).... aiya I have to stop here cos uncle so busy... so many phone calls and sms to answer leh....byeeee

Walking the tightrope

The no.1 man of cabin crew has been transferred out to another division in the airline recently. I hope I am wrong but I have this suspicion that he was transferred out because of low crew and staff morale,the upswing in passenger complaints,high resignation rate of cabin crew, the downgrading of cabin crew to third place in the World's Best Airline Cabin Staff survey by Skytrax etc.
To run a division like cabin crew is likened to walking the tightrope. It is very difficult to do a balancing act. Firstly, you have got to make sure the operating cost is lower eg. slashing of crew hotel accommodation cost, allowances, tightening of rosters and others to please your big bosses. Second, with all measures like tightening of crew rosters and downgrading of hotel accommodation at oversea stations to save money for the company you would also need to maintain high crew morale.
All the above belt tightening measures which I have mentioned are necessary because of the fierce competition from other airlines. You either be cost savvy or be left behind in the competition to survive.
In the 1980s, a somewhat similiar situation existed. But it was not a situation of cost cutting that caused the crew morale to drop and passenger complaints to rise. It was the way the crew were managed.
To solve the morale problem of the crew and the senior office staff, the company brought in a respected and affable genaral manger from the cargo division by the name of Mr. Yap. He did an awesome job and passenger complaints dipped to an all time low. Crew morale was once again skyrocketing. As a result, passenger compliments went up so high that we in cabin crew were pleasantly embarrassed. Subsequently Yap was promoted to the position of Senior Vice President or SVP.

I heard a former cabin crew man ( DVP William Koh ) was asked to head cabin crew. Hopefully, with the assistance of Mr. Koh, cabin crew division will recover and be the best in the world again.

Hit by lightning but dun scared la!

Some years ago, I encountered one nasty incident of our plane a B747 being hit by lightning.
It happened when we were flying into London's Heathrow International Airport.
The pilots tried to avoid the storm clouds but were unsuccessful. It was dreadful because the plane was being tossed up,down and sideways. Passengers were throwing out and a few were screaming in fear.
The cabin crew were all fastened in and not allowed to leave their seats. At that time, I was in the first class cabin, seated next a young passenger.
When you fly with SIA, the cabin crew will make an announcement asking all passengers to fasten their seat belts when the "fasten seat belt" signs are switched on.But when you hear the pilot asking the cabin crew over the PA to take their stations it means there is going to be a severe storm.
On this particular flight, we were asked to fasten in. The weather was bad and there was flashes of lightning outside the plane. Suddenly, there was an explosion, a loud sound I mean.....yes we were hit by lightning.
Many screamed and some thought the plane was going to crash. Frankly, I was a bit scared but I knew that hitting by a lightning was not a big deal.
As far as I knew it, the plane's aluminium body could conduct the flow of electricity from the lightning and disappear into the air. No plane has crashed or blown apart because of lightning strike in at least 40 years. One case which I read somewhere stated that in 1962 lighting hit a Pan American Boeing 707 when it was flying over the USA. The lightning caused a spark that ignited fuel vapour in a tank, causing an explosion that brought the plane down, killing all 81 aboard.
This led to rules requiring that air planes have built-in systems that ensure that a spark will not ignite fuel or fuel vapours in tanks or fuel lines.

The boy sitting next to me was calm throughout the incidence. His parents seated in the row in front were panicking. The boy told me his parents had developed a phobia for lightning. They had experienced a worst situation than this one in which the plane they were in almost crashed because of lightning strikes.

When the lightning strikes the plane, the pilots may be temporarily blinded. The blindness usually last a few seconds and there was no danger.

After the 20 minutes ordeal, we landed safely at Heathrow.

I was reading the posts on your blog about Air Crew Romantic Liaisons. They struck a cord with me so I'm sharing my story...

About 8 months into my stay in XX, I met T. He's a cabin crew with Y Airlines. Those days, I enjoyed socializing with locals and had a good social life.
It was during one of these social events where I met him. Immediately, we began a tumultuous love affair.

As soon as it started, things began to go wrong. T showed same behavior described by your readers-called up to another operate flight soon after a long flight,
unusually long layovers, swapping flights with colleagues and working more hours than what seem to be humanly acceptable. These behaviors are not limited to SIA crew hahaha...
These behaviors encroached into our "dating life" because he'd cancel pre-arranged dates at the last minute, sometimes when I was ready and waiting for him to show up.
When he wanted to "see" me, it was at his convenience. He'd show up at my apartment at odd hours for booty call. At that time, I was working regular office hours but I was silly enough to let him have his cake and eat it too. I even received unsolicited phone calls, SMSes and emails from other women in his life calling me a bitch and slut.
I'm sure you can figure out this chap wasn't looking for a relationship, it was sex he was after. However, I was choose to turn a blind eye to the reality in front of me.

I love XX dearly and I dreamt of settling down there with a home and someone special in my life-to have some semblance of a family of my own.
I was so caught up in my "dream", I made such a poor judgement of character.
When I resigned from my last XX-based company because of internal problems, I was offered other promising job opportunities. I realised that my opportunity cost for remaining in XX was far too high-missing out on my family, friends and future in Singapore. Furthermore, the prospect of fulfilling my XX dream was bleak.
That was when I made the firm decision to end things once and for all with T, return to Singapore and pursue my childhood dream of becoming a MMM.

In all, I wasted 1 year with T but I take it as a good lesson learnt. I've given up my MMM dream but what I got in return more than makes up for it.

Beware of cheats,fraudsters and unqualified people...

I have noticed a couple of people claimed they were ex cabin crew over the internet as well as others whose websites implied they were also ex crew.
I have read some of their contents which were supposed to help the cabin crew hopefuls get their dream job. They are lacking in substance and also giving the wrong information.. I don't believe the writers were ex cabin crew. Some are selling their guides supposedly to help the innocent and naive wannabes. Others merely copied articles from other people's blog and my E-Guides.
I challenge these people who claimed they were ex cabin crew to put their photos in their websites/blogs.I would be able to know if they were from SIA or not.
To the wannabes I have this to say: Don't trust people who simply claim they were cabin crew and buy their guides or ask them for advice because they may give the wrong information and advice.

Above was from (supposedly) a cabin crew. It's pathetic that cc is in such a shit. They don't heed my earlier advice not to vote for Tony and party to be their union reps. With Alan and Heart they would have been better off.

My message to the ungratefuls : It cuts both ways

No doubt the wannabes paid for the lessons I gave them to get into the airlines as cabin crew. Agreed, not all attended my talks or bought my program got into the airlines. Here, I am talking about wannabes whose dreams had been realised and never once wrote a testimonial or say thank you. Many had written expressing their gratitude but there were some who simply refused to, even when asked. Maybe they have their reasons for not wanting to communicate with me anymore. I don't ask for gratitude or anything else but just a simple testimonial so I can post in my blog. This in turn will inspire the other wannabes not to give up hope even after their failure at the interview.
I know the relationship with my course participants are supposed to be professional and business like. It will always be, I can assure you.
These people have crossed the bridges and burnt them but they don't realise when they get into trouble I am not going to help them.
There were cases when some of them got into trouble during their stint with the airline. They asked me for help. Of course,I refused to help them. They should realised that their action or non action cuts both ways.
Of course if I am able to help I would charge them a fee and it's not gonna be cheap.
A foreign stewardess asked me for help when she ran foul of the law ( she was a buyer of my online program. Her father begged me to help her. Yes I did but I charged him a big fee for helping her by bailing her out and attending the court cases with her. She was lucky I did not inform the airline or she would be sacked.
Another stewardess after getting into the airlines cut off all contact with me. She got into a position where she left the airline and later asked me to help her get back the job. I refused to help.
Another girl who also left the airline in mysterious circumstances now wants to rejoin the airline. She paid and attended my talks so I would be able to assist her get back her job. The fee of $100 isn't sufficient.
There were some cases eg a guy who couldn't get his "dream" job even after 16 attempts. He passed the interview after some coaching from me. He was reluctant to email me a testimonial. One girl got in after 15 attempts and age was catching up with her. She paid up for my talks and at the next interview she got into SQ. Another had failed many times before but after my coaching got in. Very happy and enthusiastic she called and promised to buy me a meal. After a while, I have not heard from her nor got a testimonial from her.
To those that I have mentioned, don't ask me to help if you run into trouble. Remember, you have all burnt the bridges behind you.

Infidelity or cheating on partners by cabin crew

Infidelity (colloquially known as cheating) most commonly refers to a breach of the expectation of sexual exclusivity.
Infidelity can occur in relation to physical intimacy and/or emotional intimacy. The impact of infidelity is said to be not only about sex outside the relationship, but also about trust, betrayal, lying and disloyalty.Sexual infidelity by a marriage partner is commonly called adultery, or an affair.
Please don't get me wrong when I say that there are quite a number of crew who cheat on their partners and spouses. In fact the majority are not the type and will not cheat.
Why am I blogging about this topic you may ask? Well, the answer is because I have received requests from a number of people (many were not cabin crew)for information regarding their partners' (male as well as female crew) rosters,movement,overseas hotel phone numbers where they were staying etc... They felt their partners were cheating on them especially when they were night stopping overseas.
Infidelity,adultery or cheating happen all the time and in many places. It happen in offices between colleagues, between teachers and students (lately there were a few cases reported in S'pore) etc... In cabin crew it is more prevalent due to the environmental factor.
Working together in a confined area with close proximity like in an aircraft for long hours as well as staying in the same hotel at outstations with nothing much to do also help increases the number of infidelity amongst crew. Passengers chasing after the Balmain Kebaya clad girls are also common. There were many cases of girls ditching their office bound boy friends and some housing agents and "eloped" with their new and often wealthy passenger lovers. Pilots are equally guilty.
I understand a captain had to compensate his "out of this world " ( her name was Mercury or something like that) stewardess GF because his wife had discovered about their affair. He paid his GF about half a million SIN dollars for the break up.
Most felt insecure because their partners are crew and they are not. One emailed me asking whether it was possible for his stewardess girl friend to operate a flight a few hours later after she had arrived home from a long flight. As far as I know, the airlines do not overstretched or overworked their crew . There is such a thing call "the minimum" rest period in between flights. The airlines are bound by law not to infringe on the "minimum" rest period of the crew. So in this case I suspect the stewardess was telling a lie to her partner when she claimed she had to operate a flight a few hours after arriving home.
Some suspected their partners (crew)were cheating on them when the hotels they called told them there were no such crew staying in that hotels.
One colleague told me he suspected his wife was not being truthful to him because he was unable to contact her in her overseas hotel room in spite of the many calls he made. Later, I was told by a crew that my colleague's wife was seen with a Caucasian man throughout the duration of her night stop.
Most guys would lose their girl friends once they start to fly as stewardesses. There are many temptations out there eg. better looking men, financially well off men and many "wolves" or as we in cc call them "buayas" (Malay word for crocodile).
During training,a trainee stewardess of mine told us she was a virgin and will never leave her boy friend when she started flying. I told her she would probably be the first one in the class to leave her boy friend. She disagreed but on her first flight to the States, I was told she slept with a handsome leading steward who had broken many hearts in the past.
One foreign stewardess who was based here was running around with an American chap when she had a fiancee back home. She begged me not to tell her dad whom I knew about her American boy friend.
A trainee steward told me his non crew girl friend left him before he even started flying. She felt very insecure about him being a part of cabin crew.

Like elsewhere, infidelity occurs all the time. Either you choose to close an eye to the wrong doings of your partner or you leave him or her. It's so simple as that isn't it?

A senior steward while the plane was still on ground waiting for one last passenger to arrive announced: Ladies and Gentlemen, We are still waiting for one passenger to arrive. As soon as he arrives, we will leave the aircraft.

The same senior steward during the flight made the announcement before commencement of the sales of duty free products: Ladies and Gentlemen, We will be conducting our duty free sales shortly and they will be rolling down the cabin.

A new stewardess was heard making the Welcome announcement: Don’t Read It, Say It. Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen, ......... (“Don’t Read It, Say It” though written on the page of the announcement book was meant as a reminder for the crew not to sound like as though you are reading.)

Another stewardess on landing into the old Manila Airport panicked, because she had to announced the name of the airport in the arrival announcement. Instinctively she peeked through the plane window and noticed what she thought was the name of the airport and proceeded to announce: Ladies and Gentlemen, We have just landed at MABUHAY Airport. (Mabuhay in Tagalog means Welcome).

Not along ago, I was at a housing estate doing some heartland shopping when I met an ex stewardess called Susanna (not her real name). At first, she looked familiar to me but as she approached closer I realised Sue must have been a stewardess with SQ.
Sue gave me a big sweet smile and asked me whether I could remember her. I said "yes" though I was still unsure about her eg. her name and when was the last time I flew with her.
" I was the girl who was supposed to be sacked because of a report from an IFS....remember Sir? ". "You save me and I am always grateful to you." Oh "ya" came my reply," now I remember you".
We chatted for a while along the pavement leading to the shop that I wanted to visit. Sue told me she had almost completed her 2nd contract with SQ and is now married.
Going back about 10 years, Sue was a newbie stewardess. She was a gorgeous looking girl of about 20 back then (she is still good looking). When she was on probation, an IFS who was her crew in charge tried to get her a sack. He put in a nasty report about Sue and wanted the manager get rid of Sue. That IFS was one of the manager's favourites because of his involvement and assistance in the office activities ( in short he was a balls carrier). The real story why the IFS didn't like Sue was because he hinted to Sue on one of their flights that he was interested in her. However, Sue didn't pay much attention to him and it hurt his ego. From that day, he was all out to get Sue a sack. He was a senior crew and held the key to Sue's survival in the airline.
When the matter was brought to my attention, I spoke to the manager and persuaded him not to sack Sue. I told him the IFS had a bad reputation and had victimised other junior crew before. I was involved in Sue's case because I was her ward leader.
After some investigation, the manager believed half of the IFS's story. He made the decision to extend Sue's probationary period for 6 months instead of sacking her, much to our relief.
That was probably the reason Sue never forget me.

The history of the hymn How Great Thou Art begins with Mr. Carl Gustaf Boberg (1859-1940). He was a Swedish pastor, editor, and member of the Swedish parliament. Mr. Boberg was enjoying a nice walk when a thunderstorm suddenly appeared out of no where. A severe wind began to blow. After the storm was over, Mr. Boberg looked out over the clear bay. He then heard a church bell in the distance. And the words to How Great Thou Art begin to form in his heart -- O Lord, my God, When I in awesome wonder, consider all the worlds Thy hands hath made. . . Can you imagine what Boberg felt as he formed these words? There was such calmness after the fierce storm he could only utter those words of peace.

He loves to be a pilot so he could get free medical.

He is a teenager who loves to be a pilot and so he forged a Singapore Airlines staff pass that identified him as a pilot. He also used the pass to get free medical treatment at the Raffles Medical Group at Changi Airport on 5 occasions before being apprehended.
The news is reported in today 17 December Straits Times.

BT: Toking about medical, there was a case of a steward who stole a whole booklet of medical certificate from a clinic and signed himself medical leave whenever he did not want to go to work. Of course he was caught la and sacked. Fortunately for him, his case wasn't reported to the police.

SIA steward fined for abusing neighbour

THEY were both Singapore Airlines (SIA) chief stewards and neighbours, but relations between the two men were anything but cordial.

For 3-1/2 hours one night in 2009, Devinder Singh, 51, spouted a litany of verbal abuse as he complained bitterly about 55-year-old K. Parameshwara.

Singh was apparently near the ground floor carpark of the Upper East Coast Road estate where the two SIA employees lived.

But he spoke so loudly that Mr Parameshwara, who was in his second floor unit just above, heard everything...

She is a Gem

I had the privilege of meeting and working with a stewardess called Amy (not her real name). Amy joined the airline when she was barely 20 years old. She has never worked before but beinga girl of stewardess potential, SQ handed her the job with just a single interview.
Amy was a sex bomb and more than that she was also an excellent stewardess providing her passengers outstanding service. Very often, her passengers would reward her with gifts like cash,diamond rings,expensive watches, branded clothings etc.
Amy was generous and kind to her colleagues. I remember a time Amy lent a steward a big sum of money for his wedding (he gambled away his savings). She also lent thousand of dollars to other crew members but did not received the full amount back.
During her flying days,Amy would give half of her monthly salary to charity. Today, she is still doing charity,often by cooking for the aged as well as visiting the sick and destitude.
Amy worked for only 1 term contract of 5 years with SIA.
Many rich passengers were eyeing Amy and it made her boy friend very jealous. In order to please her boy friend she left the airline.
Her boy friend bought her a red Mercedes sports as a present for leaving SIA. He also gave her private apartments and houses to show his love for Amy.

Don't blow your job away

A senior steward got into trouble with the company because he used terms like "blow job" & "French cap" in the presence of the stewardesses during an off duty drinking session.
The steward was suspended from flying awaiting a disciplinary enquiry which may see him getting the sack or demotion or at the least a severe warning for "outraging the girls' modesty".

Neighbourhood spat that went to trial

ONE party in a neighbourhood spat last year spurned mediation because the matter was serious and sought settlement in court.

As the two sides had different work schedules and mutually suitable court dates had to be found, the nine days of hearing stretched from September last year to April.

Yes, there is a walk-in interview for SIA cabin crew at the Sheraton Tower Hotel today. Yes, many will attend, perhaps a thousand or more. Yes, many will leave Sheraton Tower disappointed. The beneficiary would ultimately be the nearby Newton hawker centre, the Newton MRT,the hotel itself which the thousand of wannabes will patronised. Undoubtedly many more will benefit from the interview exercise including the taxi service. But who would be the main losers? The answer is the many wannabes!
Sure a handful of wannabes would rejoice. They are the lucky ones because they are being selected to be the cabin crew of the world's finest airlines. The rest of the thousands will go home feeling disappointed and dejected. Some will finally contact me to find out when is my next seminar and how to buy my e-guide. They don't wanna be disappointed again should there be another interview. At a time like this, many will email or contact me to ask for a shoulder to cry on. To them my reply is, don't give up but try again because SIA is terribly short of cabin crew. There will always be vacancies and interviews,month after month.
If one has tried on many occasions and failed miserably then it's time to ask what's wrong with oneself. "Was it because of the way I conducted myself at the interviews or was it due to my inadequacies?" etc etc.
Go and find the answers and help from people who knows. Don't just sit there and wait for as you get older the harder it will be for you to achieve your goals.

Someone told me that a chief purser was sacked because he upgraded his colleague who was flying as a passenger on his flight. We all along thought in this situation, the wrong doer would be severely warned but are surprised that he was sacked.

There was a rumour swirling around that more than a dozen cc including some foreign crew were hauled up by the authority for indirectly and a few directly involving in drug smuggling. When the picture becomes clearer then it will posted here.

Beyond the curtain of time

Last night I listened to the sermon preached by a man called William Branham (above video). He mentioned about being in the dimension where he could see and feel the Christians who had left this earth. I listened intently and I told the Lord I believed and was convinced what Branham said was the truth.
During the early hour of the morning (1 December), I dreamed I was at a coffee shop with a friend of mine having our usual cup of afternoon coffee. Suddenly, I had a heart attack and slipped into a coma. I then had a glimpse of the scene Branham spoke about seeing the Christians in paradise. It was an incredibly beautiful and peaceful place. I struggled and wanted to enter that dimension but I could not. I recovered from my heart attack and was well again. I do not understand why I was given the opportunity to witness the place Branham talked about.

"Amazing Grace" is a Christian hymn with words written by the English poet and clergyman John Newton (1725–1807), published in 1779. With a message that forgiveness and redemption are possible regardless of the sins people commit and that the soul can be delivered from despair through the mercy of God, "Amazing Grace" is one of the most recognizable songs in the English-speaking world.

Newton wrote the words from personal experience. He grew up without any particular religious conviction but his life's path was formed by a variety of twists and coincidences that were often put into motion by his recalcitrant insubordination. He was pressed into the Royal Navy and became a sailor, eventually participating in the slave trade. One night a terrible storm battered his vessel so severely that he became frightened enough to call out to God for mercy, a moment that marked the beginning of his spiritual conversion. His career in slave trading lasted a few years more until he quit going to sea altogether and began studying theology.

We,the check stewards ( old name for CCEs) arrived at San Francisco and stopped for a night on our way to Seattle. There were about 7 or 8 of us,sent by the company to study the B727 galleys first hand and to teach our cabin crew back in Singapore.
It was for most of us our first time in SFO. The summer was nice and cool and we did not need to wear jackets.
After checking into our hotel we proceeded to explore the vicinity of the hotel and to look for some nice food and drinks. As we ventured further, we met a stunningly beautiful tall black Afro American girl of about 20 years old. She smiled at us and we returned her smile. Ravi, one of colleagues like a hero quickly went up to her and shook her hand before we were even near her. She seemed to be more interested in Ravi than anyone of us.
Before we knew it, Ravi told us to proceed to whatever we were supposed to do and he excused himself and left with the girl. Ravi took the girl back to his hotel room supposedly for a drink.

What we didn't know was that Ravi was almost shot in his head by that black girl while back in the hotel room. The next morning while checking out of the hotel, Ravi related to us how he was robbed at gunpoint by that girl whom he picked up the night before. He lost all his cash and his watch. Thankfully he was not killed. The matter could have been reported to the police but Ravi would have to stay back in SFO for a long while,so he was told by the hotel security. In the end, Ravi let the matter rest as he did not want to miss Seattle.

Besides attending the B727 course in Seattle, we also spent our time in pubs and playing cards among ourselves in the hotel room. The following is a story of Ravi our colleague again.

The setting was a smoked filled sleazy bar in Seattle back in 1977. Ravi our good friend and colleague was boasting to his new found friends of jobless drunkards,some as old as 70 years old that he was a prince from India on a trip to Seattle to buy a Boeing 727 aircraft. He pointed at us as we entered the bar and told them we were his pilots and engineers out to test the aircraft. All the bums in the bar believed Ravi because he had bought them,estimated to be a dozen round of beers and whiskies. Ravi carried on with his tales of his Indian royalty surrounded by his liquored thirsty American friends who were clamouring for another round of free booze.
Out of a corner of the dimly lighted bar,an old haggard lady staggered towards the direction of where we were sitting. When she reached us, in a soft whisper,told us to warn Ravi not to tell his new found friends of his wealth. She said "They will mugged him and even strip his pants". We laughed and it annoyed the little old woman. She did not realised that Ravi was mugged just two days ago in San Francisco.......

Murder in cabin crew, one or two only lah.

To prove his love for her, Chinese national Wang Zhijian got a picture of his girlfriend Zhang Meng tattooed on his back in May 2007, when they were both in Tianjin.

Sixteen months later, he is alleged to have killed Madam Zhang in a frenzied attack in her Yishun flat in Singapore. She was found with 44 knife wounds....more here

There were cases of suicides,fights,hair pulling,blackmail etc in cabin crew over love affair,money and jobs etc as well as one prominent case of murder involving a Taiwanese stewardess.

The was one involving an ex chief stewardess who is serving time in Changi Prison for causing the death of her lover's 4 year old daughter.

Cases of suicides involved a captain who jumped to his death over huge gambling debt, another pilot who killed himself because his stewardess girlfriend jilted him and a trainee steward who committed suicide after he was fired from his job for falsely declaring that he was never involved in taking drug.

We hope that none of the above would ever happened in cabin crew again.

In May 2011, Singapore Airlines announced that their intention to establish a no-frills, low-cost subsidiary airline for medium and long-haul routes.

In July 2011, Singapore Airlines announced Campbell Wilson as the founding CEO of the new airline.

On 1 November 2011, the new airline was unveiled and the name "Scoot" was given.It's website was also officially launched that day.

The airline is expected to commence operations by April 2012 from Changi Airport's Terminal 2. The new airline will compete with Jetstar Airways and AirAsia X.

Fleet

As announced on 1 November 2011, Scoot's fleet is expected to consist of four Boeing 777-200. Its initial fleet would be acquired from its parent airline and reconfigured with a new seating layout. The new seating layout is proposed to have a two-class cabin configuration with 32 to 40 premium seats and about 370 economy seats in a 3-4-3 configuration. Scoot will also be purchasing 777-200ERs, which have a longer range, and therefore be able to offer services to destinations in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. There are plans in place to have 14 aircraft by 2016.

PS: In an unprecedented move, retiree CCE boh tong from SIA is currently being considered by the airline to be it's advisor.

How to take a bath in Japan hot spring or onsen.

Some of the crew love to soak themselves in the hot spring in Japan during their night stops but
aren't aware of the dos and don'ts. Here, I have come up with a few rules. Remember those with
tattoos on their bodies aren't allowed into public hot spring. In Japan, they have hot springs which
allow people with tattoos but they would often be occupied by the Yakuzas or gangsters cos they
too, often than not have their bodies tattooed ( they tattooed themselves cos of gang identification
and not for "stylo-milo" like our crew)

1)	Your clothes should be taken off in the changing room and place them into a basket together with your bath towel.

2)	You have to be nude. It is customary to bring a small towel into the bathing area, with which you can enhance your privacy while outside of the water. Once you enter the bath, keep the towel out of the water.

Rinse your body with water from either a tap or the bath using a washbowl provided in the bathing area. Traditionally, just rinsing your body is considered sufficient (and many older baths do not even provide showers and soap), but particularly among younger bathers you will find an increasing number of people who insist on taking a shower before entering the bath these days.

4)	Enter the bath and soak for a while. Note that the bath water can be very hot (typical temperatures are 40 to 44 degrees). If it feels too hot, try to enter very slowly and move as little as possible.

After soaking for a while, get out of the bath and wash your body with soap at a water tap, while sitting on a stool. Soap and shampoo are provided in some baths. Like in private Japanese bathrooms, make sure that no soap gets into the bath water. Tidy up your space after you finished cleaning your body.

6)	Re-enter the bath and soak some more.

7)	After you finished soaking, do not rinse your body with tap water, for the hot spring water's minerals to have full effect on your body.

On one of her last flights, a passenger asked to exchange for the chicken meal as he said the chicken was bad.

This stewardess took the tray, pointed at the chicken and said, "Chicken chicken, why are you so bad, please behave yourself", and returned the food to the passenger.

The pax was stumped with his mouth open for at least 5 mins.

David, CS and I were classmates in Geylang English School. David was from a upper middle class family whereas CS and I were from a lower middle class family. David had almost everything a primary school kid would have....lots of pocket money, chauffeured driven in a big Cadillac and a nanny to look after him. CS and I were given 10 cts as our daily pocket money. Compared to David, CS and I were considered poor.
David was a spoilt child and he got his way with the teachers and principal of the school. The teachers and principal were afraid of his father who was influential and wealthy. David was a bully in school and wasn't that bright compared to other kids. No one dared to challenge him, be it in sports, general knowledge etc.
One fine day, CS and I had enough of David's nonsense. I challenged him to a fight after school. He agreed and CS was the referee.
After school was over, we went behind the school to a small field which was known as our "battle ground".
There, David and I roughed it out. Mid way through the fight, realizing he was losing, David whipped out a pen knife and charged at me. Fortunately for me, CS caught hold of David and warned him not to use the knife. He kicked CS in the groin and he fell to the ground. At that point of time, I managed to stranglehold David and forced him to drop his knife.
Seeing he was held by me, an angry CS punched David in the face. The punch was so powerful that David was sent crashing to the ground. When he got up there was blood oozing from his nose. It would have been worse for David had it not been for the school gardener who stopped us from walloping David further.
Next day, David came to school with his dad. A complaint was lodged with the school principal. CS and I was subsequently caned by the principal for the fight.
We went to different secondary schools after our PSLE. David and CS went to some average secondary schools while I went to RI, one of the tops schools in S'pore. We lost contact until I met CS at SIA catering kitchen. In my earlier story, I mentioned that CS was murdered in Holland.
Thirty years after the fight with David, I met him. He looked gaunt but I could still recognized him. He did not look like a rich kid anymore. We were in our early 40s.

David related to me how he was kicked out of school because of poor results. He ran away from home after his dad passed away. David led a sheltered life and without his dad he was like a lost sheep. He couldn't find a proper job and was involved in gangland activities. He became a pimp in Geylang at one time but fell out of favour with his boss. He wanted to borrow a few grands from me but I did not lend him as I knew he would gambled at the races and lost. David's dad would have been left with a broken heart had he knew what had happened to his son.

The last I heard David was serving time in Changi Prison for credit card fraud. If he is still alive he would be about the same age as me....65 lah!

Mr Quek Ying Chong the murdered school teacher.

Mr Quek taught me till 1959 in Geylang English (Primary) School. He was the one that I have circled in the photo below.
He was a kind man who would give pocket money to some of my classmates who were very poor. He used to buy English newspaper for the class to read so we could improve our English. Many of us liked Mr Quek but we were also afraid of him whenever he loses his temper. If we misbehaved ourselves, he would either pull our ears or give us a big tight slap across our faces.
We were young boys then and could barely be considered as teenagers. We loved to play as well as fight among ourselves. Each time we fought and if caught we would be punished by Mr Quek.
One of my classmates hated Mr Quek so much that he once punctured the tyres of his Morris Minor.
Mr Quek was killed by the acid that was thrown at him when he was the principal of a school in the 1960s.
I have no contact with his family but I understand he was married at the time of his death. I really hope to meet his family members one of these days and tell them how much I appreciate him for being kind to most of us.

CS and I attended the Geylang English School from 1954 to 1959. He used to live at Lorong 17, Geylang, a place infested with thugs and gangsters. I remember visiting CS at a coffee shop owned by his body tattooed father called Ah Kow at Lorong 17.

We spent 6 years in the primary school. After our PSLE, we went separate ways to different secondary schools.
In 1968 I joined the airline as a flight steward. At the airline training school, I met CS who was working as a catering assistant. The cabin crew training school was situated in the same building as the airline catering and kitchen at Paya Lebar.
CS did not have the necessary educational qualification to be a cabin crew and so the next best thing was for him to be a catering assistant. I remember CS used to ride his powerful Norton motor bike to work. He was a handsome looking young lad but aggressive in many ways as he was when in school. He was a fighter to the core. I remember we were caned by our school principal for beating up David another classmate.
CS used to fly to Holland whenever he could obtain his leave from work. He did many trips to Holland from 1971 to 1973 ( as an employee of the airline he had free and discounted air tickets every year). At first I thought he had a girl friend in Holland but later I was told he was involved in the drug business there.For a week, he did not report for work.Later, his body was found floating in a river in Holland, apparently died of a gunshot wound in his head. I was told he was killed by a rival group.Years later, I met another classmate of ours from Geylang English School. He related to me how and why CS was killed. It seemed, the killing was an act of revenge for gunning down the head of the rival gang by CS a year earlier.

The death of CS took a toll on his father's health and within a few months, Ah Kow fell ill and died.

BT: Mr Quek (circled) was murdered by people (unknown) who threw acid in his face and body. The suspect/s was never arrested. It was believed he prohibited illegal hawkers from selling their wares near the school and they were angry with him and consequently killed him. It happened in the 1960s.

A gentleman and a great passenger.

Many may not have heard of this man called Chang M. T. who used to own a big bank in Singapore and Malaysia as well as a string of hotels. He was one of my nicest passengers besides Robert Kuok, Eric Chia and many others.
I had in my 35 years as an SQ crew served Mr Chang on many occasions. He never demanded for service and was a cool, calm and composed first class passenger.
I first met Chang in 1969 when I was a leading steward. My first impression of him was excellent. Being a chairman of a big bank, he was humble,soft spoken and courteous. He never pushed the crew around like many of the CIPs (company's important passengers) did. After having served him a couple of flights over a few years, he gave me his business card with his signature on the back of the card. He told me to show that card of his to his manager should I needed financial help from his bank.
One day, I needed a small loan to start a business. Remembering what Chang told me, I proceeded to his bank and asked to see the manager Mr.Ker. The manager's secretary spoke to her boss and then asked me to wait for a little while. That "little while" turned out to be almost an hour. Not wanting to wait any longer, I handed Chang's business card to the secretary who showed it to Ker. In less than a minute, Ker came out of his office and apologized profusely to me. He showed me to his office and asked his secretary to give me a drink.
As we sat down in the comfortable chairs, Ker told me not many people has got a business card with Chang's signature on it. "You must be someone whom Mr. Chang is fond of " he told me.
" I hope so" was my reply.

On one particular flight, I remember Chang was seated in the economy class. He embarked from S'pore and since there was no first class seat available, Chang was "involuntarily downgraded" by the check-in staff.
I was the chief steward on that flight and knowing that Chang was not feeling comfortable sitting in the small economy seat, I insisted he be given the first class lounge seat. In those days, the first class lounge seats ( 4 in total) may be allocated to revenue passengers,subjected to the Captain's approval.
Chang was pleased with my action because I had given him "face".

The next time I met Chang was nearly 4 to 5 years later, also on a flight. It was on this flight that he offered me a deputy general manager post in one of the hotels he owned in Pattaya, Thailand. I couldn't accept the job as I did not have any hotel industry experience but nevertheless I was happy. In fact, Chang encouraged me to leave flying. In his own words he told me " you are getting older and flying would be tedious for you, so try and do something else".

He used to live in Bintong Park, a upmarket residential area. He once invited me to his house but I was not in Singapore and could not visit him.

Just a year later, I read in the newspaper that he had passed away in Malaysia.

Amazing Grace using only the black keys

Wintley Phipps is the President of The U.S. Dream Academy, an organization for children of prisoners.
He makes a statement that most Negro Spirituals were written on the black keys of the piano, and then he proves it. He plays “Every time I feel the Spirit”, “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”, and then “Amazing Grace”, a so-called “white spiritual.” The white spirituals were written by white composers who used only the black keys.
The five keys (notes) are called the pentatonic scale, but in early America were referred to as the “slave scale”. They built the power and pathos of the Negro Spirituals with their unique West African Sorrow Chant sound.
The words to Amazing Grace were written by John Newton, a former Captain of a Slave Ship. After Newton came to salvation through Jesus Christ, he heard a melody coming from the belly of the ship, and it is believed it was to that sorrowful melody that he wrote the words and named it Amazing Grace. Go to the Copyright Office and you will see “Words, John Newton. Music, Unknown.”
Wintley says he believes God planned it to be written that way to remind us that we are all humans in common, no matter what race, creed, or color we happen to be. We are all connected by God’s Amazing Grace.

On 4th August this year my dear mother passed away.
My sisters and brothers had their many friends and colleagues at the wake. Of course our relatives and my mom's friends were there too.
As for me, I do not have many friends visiting us for the simple reason that I don't want to"inconvenient" them. However, wreaths and donations from some of the ex union leaders were sent to my mother. They included Alan, Rod and surprisingly Eddy too. Alan was on flight and did not attend the wake whilst Eddy is retired and had time to attend. Frankly, I was touched by Eddy's kind gesture ( he was considered my adversary at the last union election). Of course, I don't expect the present union people to attend because I had supported Alan.
Eddy and I had decided to put our differences aside and move on with our lives. As for Alan, I have not had a "kopi" session with him for a year since he lost the union election. When I asked him to have a "kopi", he would tell me he is busy. Poor fellow cos the company must be "giving it back" to him for not spending much time flying when he was heading the union before his defeat last year.
To Alan I have this to say: Fly la and make more $$ now cos when you come back in 3 years time you will be flying lesser and lesser.
To Eddy: Move on la and let the younger asses ruin the show.....Ooops I mean run the show....hahaha.

Met Inspector Tony again and another story.

I had the good fortune of meeting Tony at the same coffee shop again last Saturday afternoon (yesterday). He was finishing his first bottle of beer I was told. We exchanged greetings and I could see he was eager to tell me something. No it wasn't the continuation of the Alice story. He didn't want to talk about that one but he was ever ready to tell me of his other assignment or story. I listened intently to him as he downed his last glass of beer. "I will get you another beer" I said to Tony and he nodded in approval. I went to the counter and bought a bottle of chilled Heineken and a frosted glass. It cost S$6.50 and it was the most expensive beer in the coffee shop. But then it was rather cheap,the beer I mean, to get a good story from Tony and blog about it here (Tony didn't know I blog about his stories). I brought the cold beer to Tony and he poured it into the empty fresh glass. As for me I had the usual black coffee or kopi O as we locals call it.
The story Tony told me yesterday was about his client by the name of Bob. Bob was told Tony his wife had been calling a man's name in her sleep. The name Pete was repeatedly mentioned in her dream with much affection. Bob became suspicious and jealous. He wanted Tony to find out who Pete was and the story went like this:

After interviewing people close to Bob's wife ( name was Jean),Tony found the answer. Pete was a long lost son of Jean who was given up for adoption after Pete's father died in an accident. Jean and Pete's dad were teenage lovers. Jean was only 16 when she was pregnant with Pete. After a failed abortion and the death of Pete's dad, Pete was born. Jean knew she could not care for Pete and so gave him up for an illegal adoption.
The story was related to Bob by Tony. Now Bob understood why his wife Jean was calling out Pete's name in her sleep. Bob decided to confront Jean and asked her for the truth. She confessed and Bob forgave her. Bob was sympathetic and decided to help Jean find her son.
Tony set out and looked for the people who adopted Pete but was unable to find them. Probably they have moved house.
Through some detective work, Tony was informed Pete was abducted by a gang and smuggled into a third world country which I can't name over here. Pete, Tony was told, was made to beg for money from tourists for a beggar's syndicate. The heart breaking piece of information was that Pete had his legs chopped off so he would be sympathized by the tourists.
Tony passed the info to Bob and Jean. They were shattered by the news especially Jean. She couldn't help being hysterical and cried inconsolably. They begged Tony to fly to the country where Pete was and investigate further. Tony did as he was told and paid and flew to that third world country.
On checking into the hotel of that country (we call it country A), Tony contacted his associates and met two of them ( Ali and Muthu). After giving them all the relevant details and info, Ali and Muthu brought Tony out for a spicy curry dinner.
After dinner,they proceeded to a pub cum karaoke lounge. They met the guy ( Kumar) who was the leader of the gang that control the begging operation. Ali was the serving police inspector in A and he and Kumar knew each other quite well.
Since Kumar was having drinks with his friends, Ali told Muthu to bring Tony to Kumar's office and secretly check out whether Pete was one of his begging boys while he kept watch on Kumar.
Within the next 30 minutes, Muthu and Tony reached Kumar's office. It was dark,around 9pm but Muthu insisted on opening the office door with his master key and checked Kumar's computers/emails for any info regarding Pete. They were looking for a Chinese boy with a red birth mark on his left cheek. They frantically checked the computer files etc but could only get some info on a Chinese boy whose legs were chopped but did not have any birth mark on his face. Disappointed Tony and Muthu left the office and went back to the karaoke pub and joined Ali.
The message was relayed to Bob and Jean. Obviously they were disappointed but relieved to hear the legless boy wasn't Pete.

Over the next few days, Tony and his associates worked extremely hard to locate Pete. All Tony had of Pete was an old picture of him when he was barely 2 weeks old. One big lead was that Pete had a red birth mark on his left cheek and he was Chinese. Pete was about 7 years old by this time.
Luck was on also on Tony's side because he was informed by Ali's colleagues that there was a boy of Pete's description loitering around a tourist attraction of country A.
Tony, Ali and Muthu hurriedly left for the tourist site and found the boy who fitted Pete's description.
They bundled the boy into their car and sped off to Muthu's house.
The boy they found was a pickpocket trained by some syndicate to steal from rich tourists. On him they found credit cards, cash and ids of tourists.
One particular id picture caught the attention of Tony. Tony had seen that picture before and he recalled reading in the newspaper about a pedophile who was wanted by interpol. Now Tony and company had a lucky break because they knew the pedophile was somewhere in that city. They alerted interpol and subsequently had him arrested. The 3 of them was given a reward after the pedophile was prosecuted a few months later.
Through dna testing, the pickpocket was proven to be the son of Jean.
There was a tearful reunion between mother and son back home.

I met a guy at a coffee shop recently. We shared a table as the place was packed. He was a rather clean cut guy with a black mustache which reminded me of Eddy (ex SQ supervisor). He must be around my age I guess but was surprised to find out that he was much older than he looked.

As he spoke he reminded me of Alan ( currently a SQ supervisor), slow and cautious,peeping over his shoulders now and then as though someone was "hunting" for him. He was rather friendly and I introduced myself to him. He returned the gesture. He wanted to be known as Tony.

Tony as I found out was a retired policeman, yes a plainclothes detective. Tony's last rank in the police force was an Inspector. He told me he took the early retirement as he found his job very stressful. Today, Inspector Tony is a private investigator. His job scope covered from investigation from spouse cheating to fraud.

I found Tony to be an interesting person and so I let him do most of the talking and me most of the questioning. In fact, it should be the other way round as he was an investigator. But then I supposed he liked to talk to me because I was not the subject of his investigation nor the one who wrote his paycheck.

Tony liked to talk about his job as a police inspector and private investigator (PI). He talked almost non stop about his adventure throughout the one hour I spent at his table. He was a heavy drinker I noticed,finishing almost 3 bottles of beer within that hour. Many times he had offered me beer but I stood firm and had black coffee instead.

One of the stories Tony told me went like this:

A rich client of his Joe had suspected his mistress Alice was monkeying around behind his back whenever he went overseas to attend to his businesses. Joe was about 50 years old and Alice was in her early 20's. Joe confessed to Tony that he loved Alice a lot and would have married her had he been single.

Alice was a beautiful and sexy lady,according to Joe. She was a faithful lover until recently when Joe noticed she had been behaving weird.

Joe engaged Tony's PI services and asked to find out what Alice would do each time he left for his business trips. Money was not a problem,Tony was told. But he must find out the truth about Alice's activities.

After receiving a big down payment from Joe,Tony swung into action. He brought out his secret weapon,a scanner he had illegally purchased from an underground technician. This scanner, with the input of any mobile phone numbers could allow Tony to eavesdrop to the mobile phone conversation between the 2 parties. It was a great science discovery not legally allowed to the public.

After Tony has keyed in Alice's mobile numbers, he began to listen a conversation between Joe and Alice. The scanner's functionality was a little suspect,at least in this conversation. Tony could not figure out nor hear the name of the person whom Joe told Alice "had to be eliminated". "Oh my god!" Tony exclaimed when hearing about the murder plot. Isn't Alice was supposed to flirt around with some men and whom Tony was hired to find out? What was the phone conversation about? Elimination of someone which means murder was exactly what came to Tony's mind. What was Joe and Alice up to and what role was Tony supposed to play?

Tony traced Alice to the place she bought an express bus ticket to Ipoh, Malaysia. Tony booked a seat on the same bus too.
It was a long bus ride from Singapore to Ipoh. Tony occupied his time by watching the videos in the bus and dozing off occasionally. He was seated at the rear of the bus so he could watch Alice who was a few rows in front of him.
Once the bus reached Ipoh, someone was at the bus stop to pick Alice. So too was Maniam a 6 feet 4 black belt taekwondo expert (an associate of Tony's)there to pick Tony up in his car. Tony signalled Maniam to follow the car in which Alice was travelling.
It was not long before Alice arrived and checked into a hotel. Maniam booked a room for Tony, right opposite Alice's room from where they could spy on her.
Tony began setting up his spying equipments which included a high powered pair of binoculars, camera,eavesdropping device etc.....all pointing directly towards the room where Alice was staying.

The truth of the matter for Joe to hire Tony was to get Tony killed in Malaysia. The purpose wasn't to trace Alice's activities. Joe wanted to lure Tony to Malaysia so his henchmen could deal with him. It was something that Tony had done in the past that Joe was seeking to avenge.

To get Tony killed in Singapore was more risky for Joe because of the efficiency of the police force. However,Malaysia being a bigger country, it was more difficult for the police to apprehend the murderers. Besides. Joe had stronger connection with the underworld in Malaysia.

Tony didn't know about the trap Joe had set up to get him killed. However he was a bit suspicious when he heard the earlier mobile phone conversation in Singapore between Joe and Alice about getting someone killed.

Now with all his spying equipments trained on the room in which Alice was staying,Tony and Maniam began to settle down to find out about the truth.

Suddenly there was a knock at the door. "Who's that?" asked Tony. "It's room service....I need to check the stocks in the fridge Sir" came the reply. "One moment please" answered Tony.

Tony gestured Maniam to hide in the toilet just in case. Tony then proceeded to open the door slowly.

A Chinese man of about 30 years old appeared at the door. "May I come in Sir?" he asked Tony politely.

Tony directed the Chinese man to where the fridge was. Just before Tony could close the door behind him, another man rushed into the room with a gun in his hand. Instantly he caught hold of Tony from behind and threatened to shoot him if he resist. Tony felt the strong grip around his neck and the gun pointing at his head. He could feel that the intruder was serious about killing him and so he relented. The first man kicked Tony in his groin and he fell to the floor,groaning in severe pain.

Meanwhile, Manian who was in the toilet could no longer tolerate the intruders beating Tony. He exited from the toilet and dashed at the two men. His presence shocked them as they did not expect Tony to have a guess. Before they could recovered, Manian did a flying kick which sent the two to the floor. The gun dropped from the intruder's hand and slided under the bed. All at once Manian pulled out his revolver and pointed at them.

Tony and Manian got the better of the two and tied them up. In the hour of interrogation, Tony and Maniam found out the truth......Joe had hired the two to kill Tony and get rid of his body. There should be no traces of Tony after that. They also confessed they did not know Joe's reasons for trying to murder Tony. They also told them Alice was in the thick of things and She should know the truth.

After obtaining the info from the two would be killers, Tony went over to Alice's room. He knew Alice was having her shower. He slided the master key into the keyhole and quietly opened the door. Tony check his gun and make sure the silencer was attached. He waited for Alice to finish her shower.

Tony was getting impatient waiting for Alice to be out of the shower room. Fifteen minutes had passed and Alice was still inside the shower,thought Tony. Slowly Tony tiptoed and open the bathroom door cautiously. The hot steaming air from the shower hit Tony in his face. But there was no sign of Alice. Where had she gone?

Alice grew suspicious when she phoned the two hired killers. There was no answer from anyone of them. She suspected they were in trouble and so she fled her room but left the shower tap running to throw her enemy off guard. This would have given her at least 15 minutes advantage over her pursuer. By then she would have disappeared completely without a trace.

On seeing that he was fooled by Alice, Tony called Maniam who was in his room guarding the two assailants and asked for info regarding Alice's whereabouts. Maniam interrogated the two and almost blew their heads off with his gun for not co-operating. The fact was the two men didn't know about Alice's whereabouts either.

Tony went back to his room and sought Manian's advice on what to do next.

Tony and Manian decided to fly to Singapore to confront Joe. They wanted Joe to explain the assassination attempt on Tony's life.
After handing the earlier two assailants to the authority in Malaysia,Tony and Manian caught a MH flight from Ipoh to KL and then switched to a SQ flight to S'pore.
After arriving at Changi Airport, they took a taxi and sped off to Shenton Way where Joe's office was located. They did not wanna call Joe because they wanna surprise him.
After paying the taxi driver, Tony and Manian took an elevator to the 20th storey of the building where Joe was.

Joe had a small office overlooking the sea. It was a neat and compact place with 2 desktops, a fax machine and 2 office telephones. Joe did not have many employees. In reality, his was an OMO (one man operation).
Tony cautiously and slowly opened the door to Joe's office. All at once Joe jumped out of his chair on seeing Tony and Manian. Joe didn't know Manian but knew Tony. Joe was shocked to see Tony. "I thought you were dead Tony" said the shivering Joe. Manian stranglehold Joe while Tony took out his gun and attached the silencer. He shoved the tip of the silencer into Joe's mouth and demanded an answer as to why he wanted to kill him.

After Alice fled her room in the Ipoh hotel, Joe received an sms from Alice's mobile phone with the message "Plan executed, Tony's gone".

Joe tried calling Alice but there was no answer from her mobile. Joe assumed that Alice's mobile battery must have gone flat.

Back to the Shenton Way office where the action was, Joe was naturally shocked to see Tony whom he thought was dead.

With the gun slowly moved away from him, Joe started to explain to Tony his reason for wanting to kill him.

Many years ago, according to Joe, his younger brother Ben was arrested for stabbing a young friend to death during a gambling session. Due to his age (16 then) Ben was confined to a prison for young offenders at Bedok (Reformative Training Center or RTC). Ben's crime was murder and he was place under "The President Pleasure" category which means he could only be released if the president pardoned him. As for the other young offenders whose crime were not very serious they had a release date.
However, Ben was released after the president pardoned him 3 years later for good behaviour in the prison.

After obtaining his freedom, Ben was unrepentant and went back to crime. He had established lots of contact with the underworld whilst in RTC.
One of the first things Ben did upon his release from RTC was to get a revolver. He wanted to commit robberies with his friends. He wanted an easy life with plenty of money to spend. Ben also wanted to show the underworld that he was brave and notorious.
One day, just before Ben and his friends could carry out their plan to rob a goldsmith shop at Geylang, the police got wind of their plan and laid an ambush. In the ensuing gunfight, Ben was shot by a young dectective. Ben was arrested and sent to jail paralysed from the waist down. A year later, Ben committed suicide in Changi Prison. This was the one and only reason Joe explained he wanted to avenge his younger brother's death and it was Tony who happened to be the young detective who shot Ben.

Tony believed Joe's story. However, he still wanted to turn Joe to the authority for the attempted murder on his life. Joe begged Tony not to report him and offered money as compensation. Joe showed Tony and Maniam the stacks of $10,000 and $1,000 notes in his safe. He offered Tony $300,000 if he did not turn him to the police.
After much assurance from Joe that he would leave Tony alone and not haunt him anymore that Tony accepted the cash.
Joe and Tony settled the matter amicably.
But now what has happened to Alice, why did she send an sms that said Tony was killed,why did she lie to Joe?

Alice, I was told was never Joe's mistress to begin with. She was one of his top lieutenants in his drug smuggling syndicate. It was a multi dollar bogus company with a false front supposedly dealing in motor car spare parts.
Alice was forced to sleep with Joe because she had no choice or be killed. She was, at first employed as a clerk in Joe's so called car spare part company. She worked very hard and Joe had showered her with expensive gifts. All the compliments and gifts coming from her boss was indeed very flattering.
Joe on the other hand knew Alice loved money. He enticed her with all those gifts so she would fall for him. It was a wrong assumption of Joe that Alice would fall for him for he was not good looking and fat. Alice had a weakness for fair blond Caucasian men. When Joe forced himself on Alice she had not much of a choice for she feared him,knowing his notoriety. All along Alice played along and pretended she loved and enjoyed sex with Joe.
Now in Ipoh after the failed assassination of Tony, Alice seized the opportunity to run away from Joe. In fact it was an ideal situation for her to escape for she had transferred a cool $2 million dollars from Joe's account into hers.
While Tony was dealing with Joe, Alice was on her way to London on a SQ first class flight. Alice decision to run away from Joe was also partly due to the failed assassination attempt for she knew better than most that Joe would punished her.
The cat was now out of the bag for Alice had a secret English lover called James in London. They had not seen each other since Alice started working for Joe. Now they were dying to be in each others arms again.

Alice's flight landed in the wee hour of the morning at Heathrow Airport. James was there to pick her up. Almost an hour after the flight had landed, James and Alice sped off in a brand new red Ferrari to a London apartment where James lived alone.

Joe found out that Alice had disappeared with his $2 million. Not only had this made him hopping mad but the way in which Alice did it, lying to him that Tony was killed and also not answering his phone call. Another thing that bothered Joe a lot was the contact Alice had with his drug suppliers and distributors. She could undercut and isolate some of his drug businesses. Joe told himself he must track Alice down and eliminate her at all cost.

Why did Alice has to lie to Joe about Tony? One theory was, Alice wanted Tony to catch Joe unprepared and kill him. Alice's plan failed miserably because Tony did not kill Joe but instead compensated with a large amount of money (300k).

Now Joe wanted Tony to trace Alice's whereabouts. He was prepared to pay Tony a handsome fee if he could find out where Alice was. Tony was reluctant to do business with a man like Joe.

Somehow,Tony could not resist working for Joe again for he was offered so much money that one would probably take a whole life time to earn. Joe also promised to pay all expenses including overseas entertainment incurred during the assignment.

It was not as though Joe could not use his connections worldwide to deal with Alice or any of his enemy.One snag here was his connections were not PIs and not experienced enough. They were more efficient in eliminating the enemies than investigation work. Tony and Manian were more efficient and skillful in investigation work. They were former police officers.

Tony and Maniam without wasting anymore time swung into action. They flew to Ipoh and using their contacts there searched for Alice. They contacted their friends in the Immigration,police and airport to trace Alice's whereabouts. Photographs of Alice were shown to the airline check-in staff at the airport. Before long, they were given the information that Alice had left the day before for London via KL and Singapore.

Their helpful contacts were handsomely rewarded by Tony for their efforts.

Without any delay, Tony and Maniam booked a business class flight to London via KL on a MAS flight that evening.

On arrival at Heathrow, they hired a black Jaguar XK-RS Concept and zoomed off to Piccadilly where they have made a booking for the Berkeley Suite at the Ritz London.

During the days when Tony was a police inspector he was well liked by his counterparts in other countries. London was one of the cities Tony was sent for some kind of police and security training. He had interacted and mixed very well with Scotland Yard, Immigration,Customs and other security agency people. Whenever his overseas counterparts needed help in S'pore, Tony not only assisted them but entertained them if they were visiting. Likewise Tony's counterparts also reciprocated.

To look for Alice in the city of London was like looking for a needle in the haystack. But for Tony and Maniam it was not that difficult. They had friends and contacts there and it won't be long before they found Alice. Now the assistance of the security and airport authority friends came in handy.
Firstly, Tony sought the assistance of his friends at Heathrow. They retrieved and replayed the tapes of the CCTV for that particular day when Alice arrived at the airport. After a few hours of hardwork, Tony spotted Alice on the tapes. Further video tapes at the arrival area where James picked up Alice in his red Ferrari was also shown. Only one problem now and that's where had the Ferrari and its passengers gone to? There was no tapes to show where they drove to because they were out of the airport vicinity. Tony and Manian had to crack their heads and find out where was Alice.

There were a few options Tony could use to find out Alice's whereabouts. One was to find out from the car company that sold Ferraris in London. The other option was to interview the cabin crew who had served Alice during her flight from Singapore to London. Yet one more was to check with Heathrow Immigration the address that Alice furnished them during her stay in London. The last one might not be accurate info as Alice might have had given a false address. The best would still be the first two options.

A check with the car company showed an address in Manchester which was too far away from London. If Alice wanted to be in Manchester she would have flown directly to Manchester and not to London,figured out Tony. Alice was somewhere in London and they got to find her.
Tony and Manian went to Gloucester Hotel where the cabin crew were staying. They managed to contact the IFS or Inflight Supervisor of the flight which Alice was on. Tony chatted with the IFS and invited the crew who worked and served Alice in the first class out for dinner. Through the interaction with the crew during dinner at Bayswater, Tony found out that Alice did once mentioned she would be staying in an apartment opposite the Gloucester Hotel. "Which apartment could that be?" thought Tony and Maniam.

After dinner, Tony and Maniam straightaway left for their hotel at Piccadilly. They took out their laptops and searched for the apartments in the Gloucester vicinity. The one opposite Glocester Hotel was the Gloucester apartment built in the 1990s. "Ah ha this must be the one.." Tony gleefully told Maniam.

With a couple of crisp 20 British Pounds notes shoved into the pockets of the apartment staff, Tony managed to get not only information about the guest who drove a Ferrari with a Chinese lady but had access to James' apartment too.
Tony found out that James was the owner of a English Pub at Piccadilly Circus. The pub was used as a front for his drug and arms dealing activities.

As we know it, Tony's mission was to established the whereabouts of Alice and who she was moving around with. A report on James and his activities were also submitted to Joe. Tony and Maniam were not engaged to kill Alice or anybody.....they would NOT kill anyone unless in self defence.

Tony and Maniam flew back to Singapore and reported their findings to Joe.

Tony told me he and Maniam were legalised private investigators and not assassins. He did not want to tell me how Joe dealt with Alice and James. Do you think it's worthwhile "bribing" Tony to tell me the outcome of the whole story?

I had the suspicion that something tragic could have happened to Alice after Tony had submitted his report on Alice and James to Joe. I am not too sure what had happened to James. I also suspect Tony had a hand in dealing with Alice but he just wouldn't want to talk about it. Probably, Tony had gotten rid of Alice. What about James? I am just curious. I want to find out the truth. Should I go to London and find out more about the case? I know where James' pub is and where he lives and that is if he is still alive. I do not have much resources or finances to pay for my investigation but I do have a free air ticket every year from my previous employer to fly to London. The above story happened just a few years ago......do you think I should embark on this project ???

In July this year, I had a different experience during the Emirates Cabin Crew recruitment campaign organized by Sass Atlantic.
I credit and appreciate Emirates and Sass Atlantic for making it a positive experience, even though I was unsuccessful.
The Recruitment Officers from Emirates were professional, encouraging and kind throughout the selection process.
Sass Atlantic staffers provided invaluable assistance and guidance to all candidates.

In sharing my experiences, I wish to highlight that any job interview should be the candidate's platform to promote himself and his qualities that make him suitable for the job and the interview decorum should be in accordance with the company's image. If the job interview isn't properly conducted, how will the company suss-out the best candidate for the job. Some candidates for airline jobs may become the target market or potential passengers of the airline they interviewed with. The interview experience will affect how the candidate perceives the airline in future. If SIA doesn't address these issues, I'm concerned they'll lose out to competitors.

I tot stewardesses are supposed to be the smiling types but here the interviewer told a candidate for the stewardess position to stop smiling.
Also what's wrong with attending a course to prepare herself for the interview?
Btw, this candidate NEVER attended my course.
I have met her last night and I tot it's the airline loss for not recruiting her. She was absolutely warm and friendly and never ceased smiling when we were chatting over dinner and coffee. She has a pretty face and flawless skin. I have asked her to join another international airline if SQ does not want her.

Chef Kenneth

Chef Kenneth is the son of my ex trainee stewardess Doris in 1979. Doris in appreciation of our visit paid for our lunch today. There were 6 of us having all the meat stuff like Stew Lamb, Chicken, Steak, Fish etc and the total bill came up to S$60 which is inexpensive. The food is excellent. Congrats Kenneth and Wilson his partner.

Chief Steward Raymund Wee left cabin crew in the 1990s. He was an animal lover and had spoken to me about his love for dogs and cats whenever we flew together. At that time, I was not very interested in animals and so we did not have much in common except our job.
I remembered him telling me about his ambition of running a pet shop or pet grooming business or something to do with animals. He spoke with passion when it came to animals.
Recently, I discovered he is the owner of Noah’s Ark Natural Animal Sanctuary in Pekan Nanas, Johore.
In NANAS, he looks after and feed strayed and abandoned animals like cats and dogs,geese,horses etc.
He sold his pet grooming business in Singapore and donated all his money to NANAS.
We, as cabin crew is proud of Raymund and his love and generosity towards the poor unwanted animals who would otherwise be put to "sleep".

Joe, a retired senior crew made it a habit to switch off his mobile phone before he went off to sleep each night. This was one rare occasion when he had forgotten.
The persistent ringing from his mobile woke Joe up. It was too early in the morning for anyone to call him.

Still in a daze Joe reluctantly answered the call. A faint voice of a somewhat frightened girl was on the other end. "Joe I am in deep trouble.." Amy cried out to Joe. "Who's that ?" Joe asked. "It's me Amy the stewardess from New Delhi " came the reply. "Oh ok what's the problem Amy? " Joe asked inquisitively.
"I am locked up in the police station, I didn't do it...I didn't do it Joe...please help me " Amy pleaded with Joe.
The evening before the above episode, Amy was spending her time in her room,smoking her Marlboro Red almost non stop. She was a chain smoker and had adopted the habit from her boyfriend whom she had left behind in India. They were planning to get married when Amy turned 21. But first thing first, Amy wanted to acquired the experiences of a stewardess with the world's best airline before settling down. She had wanted, after leaving the airline to run her own restaurant business.
Feeling lonely and with her two other flatmates away on flights, Amy decided to go down to the city and do a little bit of shopping and then eat dinner.

Amy hopped into a cab and in less than twenty minutes she had arrived at her destination. The cab meter showed the fare of $8. Amy fished out a ten dollar bill from her purse, handed it to the cabby and told him to keep the change.
The way in which Amy walked and her looks turned many men's heads. She was absolutely voluptuous with a 36-24-36 figure. She had big brown eyes with long black silky hair. She would have been a Bollywood actress if not for her father who had venomously objected. He knew better than to let her daughter be an actress because he was an actor himself in his hey days.
After a delicious fiery curry mutton dinner, Amy went into a large departmental store to do her shopping.
She was looking for some cosmetic products which was quite cheap here as compared to the ones back home. Amy knew it would be a big and happy surprise for her mother with the cosmetics she would buy for her.
After an hour of walking around and looking at all kinds of beauty products, Amy left the store hurriedly to answer a phone call. The phone reception inside the store was bad and she could hardly hear the voice on the other end. She exited the store with the objective of a getting a better phone reception.
She talked on her mobile phone for a minute or two and hung up. By then a horde of security personnel from the store surrounded her. She was apprehended for having in her shopping bag items that were not paid.
She was handed over to the police and charged for shoplifting.
Amy was kept in the police station until the next morning when she was allowed to make two free phone calls. The first call was to her boy friend in India and the second one was to Joe.
On receiving the news, Joe flagged a cab and headed for the police station where Amy was detained.
On seeing Joe, Amy ran towards him and hugged him, crying unstoppably.

Amy confidded in Joe that she had no intention of stealing or not paying for the cosmestics. It was an oversight on her part due to the phone call but no one believed her story.
The police officer in charge of Amy's case made Joe sign a few documents and released her on a $5,000 bail which was posted by Joe.
Within the next few weeks, Amy was convicted of theft and fined $2,000. It was a small price to pay as she could have been fined and jailed at the same time. To add to Amy's "good" fortune, the press were not present at all the hearings and trail. There was zero publicity on this case which was pretty unusual as it involved a stewardess with a reputable airline.
After the conviction, Amy flew for another two years and left the airline.

Hi BohTong,

I tried sending you messages but not sure you get it or not. I recently tried for the walk-in again. I managed to go all the way till the end and even after the final result was announced I was shortlisted however with a condition that they need to do a second skin check on me. I did that and waited for about 30 minutes only to get the result "sorry, you are not selected, thank you for coming!" Do you possibly know what can be the reason? I did really well in the interview compared to other 4 candidates and yet i was rejected. Feeling so dejected and confused.

SP was a supervisor who thought he was god's gift to women. Although well built he had the looks of a crook. He wore a mustache which wasn't even approved by the company. He had strong connections in the office and could violate the house rules. His connections would turned a blind eye.

On a certain flight SP had a newly trained stewardess. Her name was Sue and was very nervous as it was one of her first few flights. SP zoomed in on Sue knowing she was new and scared. He touched her all over her body, on the pretext he was doing a grooming check. Sue did not feel comfortable with the grooming check SP did on her. She was afraid of SP but still resisted. SP gave up and threatened to report her to the office.
Indeed, SP submitted a bad work performance report on Sue.

On receiving the report, the cabin crew manager wanted to sack Sue. However, her ward leader came to her defence. The ward leader pointed out the past records of SP which was bad to the manager. This particular manager was new and did not know how bad a supervisor SP was. To cut a long story short, Sue was spared being sacked but had her probationary period extended by 6 months.

I stand by the above story because I know it was true. Sue still keeps in touch with me even though she had left the airline.

He whisked us to a waiting Mercedes Benz and drove us to meet his Chinese counterpart..........
When we arrived at our hotel, we were shown our rooms. We had a meeting right away with our employers and Alfred was one of them.
I was pleasantly surprised to find my manager had a bagful of training manuals which were written and published in Singapore. At first, I thought I had to write the manuals and I felt relieved that I did not have to,thanks to my efficient manager.

We started training the wannabes the following week. There were 4 classes of beautiful girls from all over China attending the course. My manager and trained one class of 40 students each while the other 2 classes were trained by people from the American airlines.
Each participant paid S$3,000 for the course after which they would be deployed to fly with either the Chinese domestic airlines or international ones

My salary was 12K a month.Conditions of work and perks were good too, of course not as good as SQ.
I was there for about a year before I left. The reason for leaving was because I was home sick.
The management gave me a grand farewell party and a big fat ang pow.

More details cannot be divulged here as I was sworn to secrecy.
