Shouldn't the autopilot be disconnected?

I read somewhere that the problem with the B737 Max 8 is the automated system. At least 2 pilots who were flying the aircraft said that soon after engaging the autopilot, the nose tilted down sharply. In both situations they recovered after disconnecting the autopilot. In the case of Lion Air and the Ethiopian Air did the pilots disconnect the autopilot after the aircraft started spiralling downwards?...or was it something else that caused the crash?

This is the other side of the same coin,
when procedures are followed. Sometimes its better
to use own judgement... to save your own backside.

Follow or not, management is never accountable.
One is promoted so that blame can be assigned.
Simple management philosophy.
