Ukraine crisis may affect intake of crew

SIA has suspended all fights to Moscow due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In fact, the SG government has joined a long list of countries in sanctioning Russia for its aggression against Ukraine.

The prime minister of Singapore in his strongly worded Facebook post said, "If international relations are based on 'might is right', the world will be a dangerous place for small countries like Singapore. This is why Singapore staunchly supports international law and the UN Charter, which prohibits acts of aggression against a sovereign state," he added.

In view of the above there will be some disruption to SIA flight schedule and consequently affect the hiring of cabin crew.

SIA cabin crew interview

Ex steward on the run? Not so

While on an errand, I met an ex crew (Joe) whom I have not met nor seen for a decade. All along I thought he was dead. There were rumors of him being killed and dumped in Malaysia by loan sharks. Therefore, it was a big surprise to see him again.

John has not aged much except that he has put on some weight. It's true he was living in Malaysia for almost 8 years prior to his return to Singapore.
We adjourned to a coffee shop nearby and ordered our coffee and sat down to chat. Joe told me he had assumed a new identity. He does not have a passport for the old one has expired. He is a wanted man here. Omg, I asked myself what am I doing with a wanted man? Will I be arrested if the police closed in on him? I shuddered to think of it. I thought of leaving the coffee shop for fear of being seen with Joe. But there again, it's interesting to hear about his life story. I wanted him to tell me more about the things that happened to him while he was in KL (capital of Malaysia) and so I decided to take a chance and stayed back.
As Joe carried on telling about his adventure, he then clarified that he was actually arrested but out on bail. He is going to be on trail soon for a cheating case. I felt relieved as he is no longer a wanted man but one who is out on bail.
I knew Joe rather well since we joined the airline about the same time. He was two months my junior actually.
In 1969, Joe was one of the crew involved in a near airplane mishap. The nose wheels of the B707 on which he was working on could not be lowered during descent. The pilots had dumped the last drop of fuel and decided to land the aircraft on a foamed runway. Fortunately at the very last minute, the nose wheels were ejected by what the skillful captain called "gravity force". Joe had a narrow escape. Joe told me he had a new car delivered that very day he arrived home. Joe had bought the Volvo 144s from his lottery winnings. He told me as he was preparing the aircraft cabin and passengers for the emergency, his thoughts was on his new car. "I thought I was going to die without first driving my brand new Volvo", he told me laughingly.
Joe is an amicable fellow. He has always been a sort of a joker who would make us laugh with his jokes. In the 1970s, Joe was a successful horse punter. He made plenty of money through horse racing and gambling. I remember he once won 64k punting on a horse. Back then,64k could buy you a nice house with a small land area. By now that same house would cost around 2 million. Joe was in his mid 20s and was a bachelor. He enjoyed what he did. Joe had strong connection with horse racing syndicates and that's the reason he was a successful punter. The bookies had lots of respect for Joe. They would avoid taking his tickets.

PS: Above story was told sometime ago and am not sure whether Joe is still around. Not long after I wrote the above story Joe was very sick. I have lost contact with him.

 My ex colleague kena Covid

Looks like many countries are living with Covid

Many countries like Australia (except for WA), Norway, UK and more  are opening up to international tourists. This is fantastic news for a lot of businesses and in particular the airline and tourism industries.

Some of my friends are planning to visit Australia and London in the next couple of days and weeks. UK has removed all restrictions and did away with Covid (PCR) tests, mask wearing etc.

SIA is now aggressively hiring cabin crew for the North European summer schedule. SIA needs around 700 to 800 cabin crew in the current interview. It has also allow former crew to attend the interview.

Readers comparing treatment of dog to cabin crew

Just like some PPS abused the poor tired crew.

Agreed with the above comment.Spitting, slapping, punching, slamming the cc with their PPS cards are common occurrences. We are being treated worst than that poodle because no one protested against the ill treatment.

Ask the stupid man to stand on his toes on one leg and punish him if can't.
To the cabin crew who have been bullied by PPS : just one ear in and one ear out, then come to boh tong's web site and vent your frustration. At the end of the day, you still get your pay, unlike this poor poodle.

Will the current recruitment be successful?

According to Straits Times 2,379 cabin crew left SIA between March 2020 and 2021. Now with more VTL opening up, SIA requires more crew. ST does not know how many crew does SIA requires. However, my guess is between 700 and 800 crew. The question now is how many would want to join SIA? Not many I guess as the conditions are not as favorable as prior to Covid days.

To begin with, I don't think the crew will have "long" nightstops overseas. They may slipped into a station after a long grueling flight and allowed the minimum hours of stay as required by law. Another reason may be due to the restriction of movement during their nightstops. They may not be allowed to leave the hotel rooms due to the on going pandemic. I think it will be good if the airline can clarify the above 2 points.

The above is my personal opinion and I may be wrong (I hope I am wrong).

A reader left this comment..what do you think?

"who in their right mind will join SIA as a cabin crew now? High risk, more demanding and rude passengers, lower overall pay, limited to no progression.

then again if one has no desired skill in the market they can join because cabin crew required least amount of brain work. All the much boasted "soft skills" are useless when it come to career switch, they are good to have but definitely need a strongly based hard skill(s).

join at your own risk."

A tribute to the nice staff

Zainal from control center has sadly passed away. He was a wonderful person to have around. I wonder what has happened to Jimmy Keong another nice and helpful worker in control center. Rumour has it that Jimmy is staying at a nursing home. Ibrahim another good colleague has also passed away a few years ago. Anyone knows where Velo is? He is another cheerful and helpful staff.
