The Japanese Stewardess Supervisor by "Teh Tareeq"

Here is another story which my good friend and ex colleague "Teh Tareeq" has taken time to write to me. Sabo san was capable of the things that was written by "Teh Tareeq".

"Hi BT...I know who you referring to...both of them. I had flown with that Capt a couple of times b4 he retired. As for Sabo, she was a real B***h...Oops. Yes all the Jss were terrified of her. Let me related an incident...
I got back from a TYO flt. with 2 Jss...Keiko and Yumi(not their real names). after clearing customs the 2 Jss were walking ahead of me...as we were approaching the lift to go up to Control Centre(this was at terminal 1 then)when we saw Sabo San seating at the waiting area.Immediately the 2 Jss approached her and bowed in due respect. Sabo San did not even look in their direction, ordered Yumi to carry on with her errands.Meantime she berated Keiko and showed her a letter which a Japanese guy wrote to her. Sabo San scolded Keiko and asked her why she did not tell this guy to stop writing to her and calling cabin crew to find of her where about. Keiko at that point was lost for words and could see that her eyes were tearing...imagine being scolded in public...and if you could see how fierce Sabo San was...I think a tiger would have ran just seeing her face then! Keiko managed to explained...she said she had several times told this guy not to write or call her at cabin crew but to no avail. this guy was a passenger on one of her flt and was really interested in her but she was not interested in him...as she had a boyfriend..but this man never gave up...so she told Sabo San she cant do anything if this man wanted to carry on writing and calling..Sabo San then gave Keiko a stern warning and told her by hook or by crook she did not want to receive anymore of this guy letter or call..and still not looking at Keiko, she waved her hand to tell Keiko to go off. I witnessed this by waiting near the lift...
Keiko was in tears by then...I told Keiko to take it easy...dont mind that B***h...I told Keiko,Sabo San was just jealous because she was an old hag now and that no man pay her much attention...
well...thats my story "

Contribution from my ex-colleague.

"Hi BT, I am your ex-colleague and I have the following to share in your blog. Feel free to publish.

Recently a CTS (Check Training Supervisor) was relinquished of his appointment midway during his tenure.
The tenure of an IFS (Inflight Supervisor) selected by the management to hold office of a CTS was for 1½ year. But for CTS Hendrick Kok, he was asked by Cabin Crew Management to return to his usual post of IFS prematurely for conduct unbecoming of a CTS.
Hendrick comes from a wealthy family which owns restaurants in Singapore. Early in his career as a flight steward, he was disliked by many of his batch boys and peers. That’s because he had a tendency to be boastful and talk down on them. But he got along well with his superiors, ie Leadiing crew, Chiefs and Senior Chiefs, because he curried favour them. He is nice to people who ranks above him. As he rose in his ranks, he sought to make a name for himself by being popular with his subordinate crew and his bosses. He would help his bosses to organise functions and garnered the help and support from his subordinates. He used to help his former boss Chew Tai Lu in organising the Cabin Crew Dinner and Dance which was held biennially (once in two years). The bosses were well pleased with him. His arrogant pride swelled. Over the years he has also rubbed shoulders and befriended many important and influential people. A sense of self-importance propels his attitude towards people he considers lesser than himself.
One of the duties of a CTS, being a Ward leader is to emcee a gathering of crew in his ward for a day’s programme. There would usually be around 100 crew of all ranks being rostered to attend the Ward Get-together. The day would be filled with various speakers mostly from Cabin Crew management staff updating the crew of upcoming changes in the Cabin Crew Division. The Ward leader has also to conduct games and take notes of Q&A conducted by the Cabin Crew Manager.
At the beginning of his tenure as CTS, Hendrick together with some other CTSs had to sit in a Ward Get-together to observe and understudy the day’s programme being conducted. While the other CTSs were observing the running of the programme, Hendrick with his arrogance having the wiser of him decided to read the newspaper. One of the CTSs concerned for him, asked him if he was not worried about his coming Ward Get-together. Hendrick arrogantly replied that that was a simple task as he had emceed many similar events before. His newspaper reading was observed by his immediate boss, Barry Hung. But Barry did not confront Hendrick.
The day came, not long after the above event, that Hendrick’s Ward Get-together was held. That morning, after all his ward members had turned up and seated in the auditorium, Hendrick the Ward leader was nowhere to be found. So another CTS stood in to replace Hendrick. Barry Hung and some other management staff called his cell phone and home phone, but they were not answered. After several attempts of phone calls, finally Hendrick answered the phone, being just awoken from sleep. He got dressed and attended the Ward Get-together he was supposed to take charge and emcee.
His excuse to Barry Hung was that he had taken some cough mixture the night before that caused him to oversleep.
During the next few months as CTS, there were some disagreements and misunderstanding between Hendrick and his boss, Barry. Though they did not surface into any major issues, Barry was much annoyed by Hendrick’s attitude. Then a couple of months ago, something Hendrick had been doing all the while when he went on check flight, came to the knowledge of his bosses. The office received a complaint that even before the flight had taken off, Hendrick had already completed a check report on a certain crew, and given to the latter to acknowledge. Only God knows how many check reports he had completed in such a manner, in the course of his career. Of course such reports are always excellent for if not, his conduct or rather misconduct would have come to light earlier. So this is one way he cast influence on his subordinates, bribing them with excellent reports. Of course he was summoned to see his immediate boss, Barry who chided him for his unethical and irresponsible conduct as a CTS. There was no excuse good enough for Barry to accept.
Not long after the above episode was to be the official opening of the SIA Sports Club. Barry was given the task of organising ushers and car park wardens during that day. He had roped in some CTSs to be ushers and car park wardens. Barry had given strict instructions that they were not to leave their posts and they were not allowed entry into the official opening function area; they were not given the special pass into the function area. Among the VIPs who were invited to attend the event was SIA Executive General Bey Soo Kiang, whom Hendrick knew personally. When the General arrived he was greeted by CTS Hendrick with a broad smile. They had a short chat and in the process General Bey discovered that Hendrick was not allowed into the function area. Even though Hendrick was without the special pass to enter the function area, General Bey personally authorised Hendrick admission into the function area.
While mingling amongst the VIPs, Hendrick was spotted by Barry. Barry was furious at Hendrick being so bold as to defy his orders. Barry reported the matter to his bosses. Not many days thence, Hendrick was called into the manager’s office with Barry attending the inquiry. The manager found Hendrick’s conduct unbecoming of a CTS and was asked to relinquish his position of CTS and return to his former post of Inflight Supervisor. As a subordinate, Hendrick must had been a thorn in the flesh for Barry and the decision by management to relinquish Hendrick’s position, must had been a welcome relief for Barry; for immediately following the inquiry, the latter was seen smiling, humming and whistling happy tunes in the office. Barry felt a sense of victory to see justice meted out to Hendrick for the consequences of his pride and arrogance.
As for Hendrick, he will get over the disgrace and fall from grace in no time. Then he will go about being his normal self again, with his arrogant pride moving him to achieve his self-conceited ends."

Thank you so much for the above article.Although,I don't know who you are because you want to remain "Anonymous" but I believe your story is true. I know Hendrick and Barry ( not their real names of course)too.

Guess what? He is now trying to blog about airline stuff. He is a good for nothing copycat and I just hope he does not duplicate the things I've blogged.
Frankly,I am not afraid of his shoddy work and ultimately no one will read his blog.
You all can visit and see for yourselves what a big copycat this bor is.I can provide you the link and when you visit that blog, please tell him in his comment box what poor impression you have of his work. Say it's from me...hahaha.

The Japanese Stewardess Supervisor

She joined the airlines (MSA) way back in the late 1960s,as a young naive and bubbly stewardess from Tokyo,Japan. It was her first job and first time in Singapore. Her spoken English was quite good and she had a way with her seniors. Almost every senior crew like her. Her name was Sabo san (not her real name).
Sabo san was among the first batch of Japanese stewardesses, employed to serve the passengers on the SIN/KUL/HKG/TPE/TYO vv sectors. Her contract with MSA was for five years and it was not renewable.
During the course of her career with the airlines, she was one of the most popular Japanese stewardesses with the passengers and senior crew. She was 22 years old when she first started as a flight stewardess. Sabo san was busty and bursting with energy, always on the go.
The only one who could slow this energetic Japanese girl was Captain Turum Seng (not his real name). They met on one flight to TYO and Capt. Turum,a young commander of the Boeing 707,took Sabo san to bed with ease.
Capt Turum was a handsome young man with broad shoulders and a wife with kids. He was arrogantly confident about himself and many female Caucasian passengers fell for him.
One thing I knew about Captain Turum, he was one of the few cockpit crew who would pay for his drinks. The other captains would order the chief stewards to transfer the aircraft free bar drinks, meant for passengers, to their canisters (bottles) and drank in their hotel rooms.
The young Sabo san was very much in love with Capt Turum for he could go on screwing her the whole night while downing his favorite bottle of Johnnie Walker Black label and puffing away the unfiltered Lucky Strike. He often made her "come" repeatedly until she couldn't walk straight the next day. Her favorite place in the aircraft was the cockpit and she often watched him pilot the dashing B707 from the jump seat.
While Sabo was hoping that Turum would leave his wife and marry her,Turum was at the same time having fun with the Aussie girls in Sydney. He would have half a dozen Aussie girls lining up for him in the crew Sydney hotel when he night stopped each time. Sometimes,he would passed the "leftovers" to his co-pilots and flight engineers or he would set up a Johnnie Walker Black Label orgy session.
Poor, innocent and naive Sabo san was hoping against hope to get married to Turum, whom she all along thought, was a decent faithful boyfriend.
One day,Sabo san found out about Turum's flings with the other girls and she quietly retaliated by going to bed with the other cockpit crew. However, she was so disappointed with the other bed partners that she decided to carry on her sexual relationship with Turum by closing "both eyes" to his sexual activities.....to be continued

Story of the Japanese Stewardess Supervisor.

This Japanese supervisor was a pain to the Japanese girls as well as the local crew and the CCEs...she was screwed,in her younger days by a .....tune in around noon tomorrow to read more about this Japanese ass..SmileyCentral.com

An appeal to the staff who travel as passengers.

More often than not, the cabin crew had a hard time on the flight, trying their level best to serve the fare paying passenegers, being treated like slaves and maids by their own airline colleagues on FOC or discounted tickets.
We like to appeal to these staff and their family members to be considerate to our cabin crew and not to worsen an already bad situation.
In my experience as a cabin crew,I found the cockpit crew family members the worst of all. It was more so if the spouse was a captian.
I came across many times where the family members of captains were demanding and arrogant. Their children were as bad their mothers.
There was a case of a senior captain's wife who was unhappy with the inflight supervisor because he allowed a first class full fare passenger to occupy the seat next to her.She later on retaliated by complaining against the IFS for being rude.
Cases of capts' wives and children behaving as though their husbands/fathers own the airlines were common.
There were instances of these kids littering the first class cabins with peanuts, food, drinks,on board amenities etc and expected the cabin crew to clean the cabin floor for them. Some pressed the call bells for the slightest thing.
There was a case where the children of a staff who travelled in first class kept pressing the call bells in the middle of the night,to the annoyance of other fare paying passengers. As a result of the complaint and the blatant abuse of the free flight, the company passed a ruling stating that children of staff who were entitled to FC travel must be of certain age to qualify for the FC travel.
Another issue which could not be resolved between the cockpit and the cabin crew was
the cleaning of toilets after their use. The cockpit crew,I would dare say about 90% of them, would not even wiped the toilet basin dry after their use inspite of a notice pasted on the basin urging the user to wiped the basin as a coutersy to the next passenger. The argument was,the cabin crew was employed to clean toilets and not the cockpit crew, even after they have dirtied them. What a sad thing it was and a poor reflection on the cockpit crew.
Know what? I personally found MM Lee and his wife to have kept the toilets clean after their use. Mr. and Mrs Lim Chin Beng too had done the same thing on all my flights with them. Mr. J.Y. Pillay, the former SIA chairman, included.
So the question here is: why then can't the cockpit crew clean the toilets after they had used them? It won't take more than a minute to clean them. It's that simple: wipe the basin dry with a paper or linen towel, flush the tiolet and put the toilet cover down.
I sincerely hope things would get better on board and that the current dispute between SIA and its pilots before the Industrial Arbitration Court could be resolved amicably.

Bar Manager In Singapore Murdered.

It's not a surprise anymore to hear of workers in bars, discos and entertainment outlets being horribly beaten to death by rowdy and sometimes intoxicated groups of customers or passerby.
The most recent case is being reported in today's Straits Times where a 33 year old bar manager was brutally beaten to death by a group of men and women in Singapore.
The killers have yet to be apprehended.
We hope the culprits would be arrested as soon as possible and dealt with mercilessly.
In the airlines, things like the above could have happened,if not for the tough laws introduced after September 11.
I recalled an incident where one of my colleagues was threatened by a passenger who said that he was able to get my colleague killed for a few bucks.
Another case was of a steward who was punched by a passenger for not being able to serve him in a manner he had expected.
A few cases, were of passengers spitting and kicking the crew.
I hope there would be tougher laws introduced to protect the often abused staff in the service line.

Sleepy BA pilot refuses to fly

A British Airways flight from Delhi was delayed by 13 hours on Sunday after the pilots and the rest of the cabin crew reportedly refused to fly due to inadequate sleep.

Scheduled to take off from the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi at 2.30 am on Sunday, the British Airways (BA) flight with 285 passengers, was held up and the takeoff finally re-scheduled for 3.15 pm. It took off five minutes later.

Apologising to the passengers for the delay, the BA officials said that such a step was taken keeping their safety in mind.

“It was not just the pilot but the entire cabin crew which was suffering from lack of sleep. This was due to some disturbance at night in the hotel they were putting up in. Had it been only the pilot, we could have still managed to take off because we can handle such a case between the first officer and the captain. But it was the entire cabin crew which was tired,” Radhika, the official spokesperson of BA, Delhi, said.

“Hence British Airways did not take the risk and delayed the flight by 13 hours,” she said, adding that 12 hours is the minimum time needed to recuperate.

Radhika added, “We will take up the matter with the hotel authorities since the disturbances there cost us the delay,” she said. However, while the airlines cited lack of sleep, according to sources there could be other reasons as well.

“This is not the first time that a British Airways flight was delayed. Quite often the pilots are not allowed to fly because of alcohol intake shortly before the flight. According to rules by International Civil Aviation Organisation, pilots should not consume alcohol 12 hours before a flight,” said a source. “The entire crew suffering from want of sleep is unheard of, and they were also staying at a five-star hotel where it is unlikely that disturbances kept them awake,” the source added.

I blogged the truth.

A cabin crew by the nickname of Teh Tareeq( also a regular visitor) wrote this with reference to my previous post "The Bad and Ugly Crew":

"Hi BT its me again....yes that was true. I knew alot of them did cook in the room. I have witnessed it myself but do not joined them...
honestly speaking I have never cooked in the room...the most was to boil water(using hot rod)to make tea or coffee...I always bought sandwiches and salad or brought my ikan bilis sambal from home and ate with bread...I did this when night stop in Zurich/Copenhagen/Frankfurt/Paris especially during winter when the weather was freezing cold and just lazy to go out for dinner..otherwise I enjoy eating out...my favourite is Italian and Japanese food. I ahve no problem with food in Japan as I love Unagi..and can eat unagi everyday for lunch and dinner...by the way you can post my comments and the previous one too...if you dont mind maybe I can pen down some of my experiences and you can post them in your blog...Teh Tareeq "

The Bad and Ugly Crew

I have heard of crew, both cockpit and cabin crew of many airlines resort to cooking their meals in the hotel rooms while at outstation.
The reasons varied from one individual crew to another. Some cooked in the rooms because they were not used to eating the food sold in the countries where they nightstopped while others did it for economic reasons.
Whatever the reasons,it was not encouraged by the hotels. Firstly, the rooms if not cleaned after cooking would attract cockroaches or rats. Secondly,it could be a fire hazard and thirdly, after all the discount the hotels had given to the crew (agreed during the signing of the contracts),they expected the crew to patronise their food outlets.
To the hotels, another kind of cooking that contained spices eg. curries or cooking with ingredients which were strong and "pungent" were also discouraged as the lingering "odour" could offend other guests.
There were cases where crew had been disciplined by their respective airlines for cooking in hotel rooms. Some burned the carpet floor or wooden tables as a result of their carelessness. Other splattered the walls with gravies of curry, stew, tomato and chilly sauce etc.
Another popular "pastime" was the "hijacking" of paid movies and watched them for free on their television sets. They usually stripped off the little magnets on the hotel closet doors and stuck them somewhere on the inside of the television sets. In this way,one could watch all the paid hotel movies for free.
One cheapskate crew was caught for replacing the hotel room light bulbs with his owned fused bulbs which was brought from home.
There were a few cases of crew, after consuming the alcoholic contents of the miniaturised bottles in the mini bars, refilled them with colored water. One even filled the empty bottle with urine .All of them escaped payment when they checked out.
Cases of crew stealing bath towels, pillow covers, coffee cups, teaspoons were common.
However, the most bizarre was the loss of a full length curtain by a hotel on Queensland Gold Coast.
There was another crew who almost got electrocuted because he inserted a penknife into the bed massage coin box to get a free ten minute massage in a Hong Kong hotel.
There were and are many more mischievous and sometimes, malicious and destructive acts committed by the crew which I am not able to recall at this moment.

Something Happened to Co-Pilot John in Istanbul

The following is a story posted in the comment box by my ex-colleague called Xcrew. I took the liberty to post it here for my readers. It was a true story. (Thanks to U, Xcrew and I hope you or anyone else could share your stories here with us).

"A few years ago, a set of SQ crew nightstopped in Istanbul. The crew usually arrived at the hotel after the flight in the early morning. They would have breakfast in the restaurant and then catch their sleep for they had just worked overnight from Dubai. (The crew were accommodated in Hyatt Regency. The hotel was situated about a 5 minutes walk from Taksim Square and the city walking street, where there were many shops and food places. To go to the walking street, the crew had to walk through a small park behind the hotel).
The co-pilot of the flight FO(First Officer) John woke from his sleep in the evening and felt a little hungry. He washed up and decided to walk to the walking street to have his dinner. It was already getting dark when he left the hotel and as he got into the park, he was suddenly attacked and robbed by a few men. John did not know what hit him for became unconscious and the attackers left him in the park. It was only the following morning, when a Hyatt employee on his way to work found him lying unconscious in the park. He was sent to hospital and a Police report was made.
In the Police investigation, it was found that his room was entered into using his room card key on the night of the mugging. They also found his SIA uniform jacket missing from the room. On the day of flight departure, FO John was still in hospital and the cabin crew also came to know of the unfortunate incident FO John had encountered.
Leading Stewardess Lily was one of the members of the flight crew. Two weeks later, Lily did the same flight again, nightstopping in Hyatt Regency. The following day after arriving Istanbul she and Leading Steward Peter decided to take a walk to the walking street. While they were walking in the walking street, Lily noticed a man wearing an airline-like uniform jacket, in a friendly manner beckoning her to come. Suddenly, she remembered FO John's uniform jacket being stolen from his room, on her previous Istanbul flight. Intrigued by the jacket, she walked closer to the man. She was totally astonished for she recognised that jacket to be a Singapore Airlines pilot uniform jacket with SIA logo on it. She put two and two together and guessed that that could be FO John's jacket. She felt all excited at the thought of one in a million chance to have caught FO John's attacker. But she remained cool so as not to arouse suspicion, so she and Peter proceeded walking in the walking street. She was all excited sharing her discovery with Peter as they walked away from the impersonator. She wasted no time and immediately reported her sighting to the Police. She led the Police to the bogus SIA pilot and got him arrested.
The Police in their report confirmed that jacket belonged to FO John. They also found that the men who attacked and robbed John belonged to an illegal syndicate of about 10 men from an African country.
Thanks to Lily with her quick thinking, the culprits were apprehended and prosecuted".

A Sad Day For Beh.

What a sad day it must have been for poor Beh. In her blog she revealed publicly she was a Lesbian and you can see the barrage of unkind and hurting comments her readers hurled at her.
I had advised her not to tell too much about herself but she said she wouldn't feel good if she started lying about herself.
Now, she realised it's a jungle out there and I hope she will learned.
To Beh: I am truly sorry for the abuses hurled at you.

By DIANE HAINES
HERALD NEWS

During her 19 years as a United Airlines flight attendant, Stacey Haynes experienced many emergency landings. Those close calls didn't bother her.
But Sept. 11, 2001, grounded her.
"It took something out of me," says Haynes of the infamous day when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. "I started to view life differently. I appreciate days and moments. Every moment is precious to me,"

Want to ask you all a question.....why are the comments posted here are so anti boh tong(me lah, stupid hehehe)? I noticed there are fewer kind comments. Have I stepped on someone's toe?
Give me some feedback so I can blog to serve you all better. Or should I just moderate the comments and filter out the bad ones and only publish the good ones? But then I believe in free speech and democracy....so I do not want to filter out the lousy comments about me. What do you think?

The Naked Lady In a Taipeh Hotel.

Ladies and gentlemen, you are about to be transported by XXXX Airlines to Taipei to witness a scene whereby a senior steward by the name of Johari was accused of creating havoc and bringing disrepute to the airline.
The case happened some years back at a hotel in TPE (3 letter code for Taipei) where the cabin crew stayed during their night stops.
Johari was an LS (leading steward),married and had children. He was a amicable person, soft spoken and well mannered. Jo (Johari) was well liked by his crew and was not the hanky panky type of guy. He was also known as the cool guy who loved horse racing and smoking. He drank in moderation and was fun to have around.
Adrian was a galley steward (GS) who worked with Jo on this fateful trip. He was a rough looking guy in his early twenties, well built and loud. Back home Adrian used to drive fast cars and was a " gi seow" ( Hokkien for mischievous) type of man and drank a lot. He was a suspected drug taker.
One morning around 6am, the was a big commotion along the corridor, outside
a hotel room. A fair busty naked lady of about 25 years old was banging on the door of a room and screaming in Mandarin about being cheated.
Woken from his sleep by the loud banging of the door outside, Jo peeped through the spy glass on his door and saw a Chinese lady in distress.
Jo opened his door and tried to calm the lady down. He persuaded her to get into his room and gave her a large bath towel to cover her nakedness.
Slowly, the lady calmed down and in her limited English told Jo about what had happened.
She claimed she was some kind of "social escort" and her client was staying opposite Jo's room. Her client had refused to pay her for her services rendered and had thrown her out of his room that morning.
Desperate but wouldn't dare to report to the police, she can only persuade her client to be merciful to her....that was to pay her and let her have her clothing back. But he wouldn't and instead chucked her out of his room.
After a quick investigation,Jo found that her client was Adrian the steward. Jo,then called Adrian on the phone and spoke to him about the matter and summoned him to his room.
After a lenghty discussion among the three of them in Jo's room, the matter was finally settled with Adrian paying the lady for her services and returning her clothes to her.
On their return to Singapore a day later, Jo was shocked to receive a note from the cabin crew manager asking him to see the manager regarding a complaint from the hotel management in TPE.
After a month of investigation, Jo was charged with causing nuisance and bringing disrepute to the company while staying in a hotel in TPE.
At the disciplinary inquiry, the union representatives who defended Jo brought Adrian in as a star witness.
The charge was on Jo and not Adrian and it was made very clear to the disciplinary board by the union rep.that Adrian was only a witness.
To the surprise of the disciplinary board, Adrian confessed he was the guilty party and not Jo. Adrian revealed the truth of the matter and within an hour,Jo was acquitted of being the wrong doer.
The Union rep. insisted the company apologised for wrongly accused Jo and causing so much stress to him and his family.
A few days later, the media got wind of the matter and New Nation (now defunct) published an article "XXX Say Sorry".
It caused a lot of embarrassments to the airline and the chairman, we understand, hauled up the disciplinary committee and gave them a dressing down.
A few years later, Adrian was sacked from his job not because of the incidence but for "other" matters.
As for Jo, he had his promotion held back for a long time for no apparent reasons and had since left the airline.

An interesting email from London.

The following is an email from one of my readers and I had her permission to publish it here. Of course, I deleted the names of the crew she mentioned or else I may get sued.

( sorry, the email sender has asked me to delete her email that was posted here earlier on)

Selling my blog?

Damn it!!! I don't know how that ASS Bors know I am trying to sell my blog.
Indeed, I am negotiating right now and it's a matter of how much the buyer is willing to pay me.
You see I am snowed under with my work and do not have enough time to blog but I am not giving it away just like that or close down my blog. I have many fans, not only from Singapore but all over the world. So I thought it's better that I sell it to a crew or ex crew so he/she can continue blogging about the interesting life of a cabin crew.

It's a damn unfair world!

To think of the salaries the ministers are paid and the huge pay increases to come,I just feel like kicking my ass for getting up as early as 4am on certain mornings to blog for people's entertainment.
I do not even make S$100 a month from a dozen of blogs that I have.Besides,I am jobless and at 61 years of age, live off my children's generosity of $300 a month.
When I asked for a small donation a few months back (and it was voluntary),I caused such a big uproar from my dear readers that almost gave me a heart attack.
Some demanded that I should keep them entertained for free because it was supposed to be my passion.
Take it from me la,man shall not live by passion alone.
The ministers should also "minister" this tiny red dot island by passion and without fat salaries? Hey, wake up lah Singaporeans and PR alike. Nothing in life is free.

The Dutch Goddesses/Stewardesses.

The Dutch stewardesses became a liability to the airline. They were full of complaints regarding the salaries SIA paid them. They were unhappy with the terms of their employment. They were allowed a non renewable 5 year contract, like the local stewardesses. They were based in London and paid housing allowances, station, meals and night stop allowances. Still they were not happy because most of them left their flight attendant jobs to join SIA and had expected a much better salary.
The airline stood firm and refused to pay them a cent more. This was and still is the philosophy of the company, never be blackmailed by its staff.
Sure, the Dutch girls had no choice but to stay on until they got another job with another airline which is willing to pay them more.
For the time being, these girls "screwed" the company by playing it crooked. They drank alcohol while on duty, cut corners on the service, rude to passengers, stole cutleries ,food, drinks, alcohol etc from the aircrafts.
They slept with the senior male cabin in return for an easy life on board the flight. They screwed around with the pilots and passengers. They created havoc and eventually, after less than a year with SIA,the whole lot of them were sacked.
From that bad experience, the company "vowed" never to employ European girls as stewardesses again.

The Dutch Goddesses.

In the early 1970s, SIA ( known as MSA at that time) employed more than a dozen girls from Holland as flight attendants. They were employed because of their language skills. All of them spoke English and one other European language besides their own mother tongue.
These Dutch girls were recruited in preparation for the launches of flights to Europe and London.
On every European flight, there would be at least one Dutch stewardess rostered.
There was great excitement then to see these gorgeous Dutch girls. It was reported in the media both in Malaysia and Singapore. It was a big deal for an Asian airline to have European stewardess in those days.
The girls had some flying experience before joining SIA.They were ex-stewardesses from Alitalia,KLM,Lufthansa etc.
SIA paid them very well back then, many times more than our salary.
Netherland was beaming with pride because the world most renown airlines had employed their goddesses.
PS. In the next posting, you will read more about these Dutch goddesses.

"SIIA,unions' marriage to stay the great way to fight".

It's heartening to note that SIIA has initiated such marriages with the unions (today's newspaper page h3). Just hope the whole idea works, even though I have some doubts.
SIIA is a good company to work for. It's the few top....for full story click here.

Another Steward Fell Victim...

There was another newbie by the initial of RK who fell victim to the pressure asserted by the seniors. He was not good in his job and besides, he occasionally sipped alcoholic drinks while working.
It got so bad and RK had a mental breakdown on one flight. He took a carving knife from the galley drawer and chased the chief steward who had harrassed him. He had to be stopped by the other crew.
RK was relieved of his position and sent for counselling where they arrived at S'pore.
RK was lucky because the company decided to keep him. He was given a ground job and today, 20 plus years after the incident, he is a supervisor.

The going got tough and my ex colleague......

The senior crew in those days, like I said before gave us the newbies, a rough time. The treatment in a way, fortified and toughened us. But there were newbies who can't withstood the pressure and they went bonkers, one even committed suicide.
TQ joined the airline around the same time as me. We sort of got along well as new flight attendants. We did share hotel rooms and talked about lots of thinking concerning work as well as the good, the bad and ugly senior crew.
We shared the bad experiences we had.
TQ,from the start,I felt was not strong mentally. He was scared of many things. One of them was ghost and the other were the senior crew.
He was badly treated because he did not perform his job to the standard required by the seniors. He was also not sociable and didn't mixed around with the crew during the night stops.
In this line, one has to be street smart. For example, you must know how to please the chief and leading stewards as well as the senior girls. As a junior steward, it was expected of us to know the drinks and food our seniors consumed. We had to do our homework and find all these information even before we got to work under them.
Once we were rostered to fly with these seniors, we had to know their profiles. Asking them what they would like to drink would have been unsatisfactory. We should know and prepared their drinks when the aeroplane was on ground eg. coffee with or without milk with so many cubes of sugar. If we didn't do our homework and worst still if we forgot to serve them before anybody,we would have a miserable time on the flight. We would be "zapped" and given bad reports.
TQ might have failed in these areas and as a result the seniors ganged up together and treated him badly.
Subsequently, TQ had a mental breakdown and was sacked.
TQ was in IMH (Known then as Woodbridge Mental Hospital) for a while.
After his discharged, when some of us visited him at his house, he showed us something that was horrifying. He took his goldfish out of the tank and called each one of them by the name of the senior crew, who had treated badly and sliced them to death. He even mentioned Mr. P who was the senior staff in our office. That showed, even when he was insane, he never forgave those people who had harassed him.
Not long after the scary incident,TQ committed suicide.
However,no senior crew really cared whether he lived or died.
The incidence broke my heart and I vowed that one day,if I ever become a senior crew,I would never repeat what those people had done to the juniors.

The going was tough...

The going was tough as a junior steward but it got us going better in life. The newer crew are soft and the slightest harshness will see them throwing in the towel. I heard it's the same story everywhere in Singapore, like in the army,in politics,in family lives,in schools etc.
I still remember the London flight pattern was like this SIN/BKK/BAH/ROM/AMS/LHR vv and one set of cabin crew operated SIN/BKK/BAH night stop and the other set took over from BAH would operate BAH/ROM/AMS/LHR. These were norms.
Today, they would operate SIN/BKK and then night stop. Next day they would continue to BAH and night stop. After that they would worked all the way to LHR via two other stations.
We used to do the SIN/PER/SIN sector, all in one day. Nowadays, the crew would night stop in PER...better life isn't it?
No, I do not begrudge the new generation crew.I hope they would get better deals from the company but if their union is not careful, it might drive the company out of business because besides fuel cost, staff cost is the next costliest component.
