In 2003 when SARS struck and only for a few months the economy and businesses in general were affected, SIA cabin crew management retrenched dozens of crew. My colleagues and I (around 20 of us)were given the early retirement as a way to save cost for the company.
The current pandemic which is many times more serious than SARS and cost trillion of dollars of losses in businesses and five million lives worldwide, SIA cabin crew management did not retrench a single Singaporean nor PR cabin crew. This pandemic is almost two years with us and despite of the cancellation of hundreds of flights and losses amounting to billions, SIA puts on a brave front and has faith that it will recover. Kudos to SIA and its cabin crew management!👍

Covid is a new ball game, worldwide affliction.Deep pocket may cover the bills for some time, till the crunch time.New ventilation system using uvc may solve the rebreathing air plus vaccination and select resumption of travel avoiding delta plus variant countries. It may be a new dawn for airlines, where trading and travel fuels the economy,or bust.Treatment using molnuprir help to cure, maybe available on board, more than extra good service or award winning. In covid time, factors change not close hand handling to show good service point.Jmo.
Ding tong !Yes sir,the purser said, thru his transparent faceplate, and masked.'I would request the Molnupirarir pills, with a water please',said Mr Pax.Certainly said the purser,"the magic pill, taken early, cures Covid".You have a nice rest,by landing time you will be fit as a fiddle. Thus, the next big thing in inflight live saving, menu.Award winners 20** Airline Award.Nominated by paxs .
Uncle BT I daresay JSS saved many SG jobs, such scheme was not avail during SARS. However, trust that there will be a time when we have to tally up the bill for this Covid War and pay for it one way or another. During SARS it was done along with restructuring, and you can count SATS, PSA in the list with SIA too. What happens after this war is anyone's guess; but till then take care Uncle BT!
Thanks Tim for your comment. Well said, as usual coming from you. You stay safe too and will catch one of these days :)
During the SARS epidemic, a minister said u better retrench quick bec it was better to axe a few than to see the whole industry like SIA collapse. These few words by that minister gave the mandate for all industries in Singapore to start consolidating by retrenching/retiring personnel.
Without this minister "advice" the management would be afraid of such a move so soon.
As for Covid 19, the first thing the govt expounded was to keep jobs and at the same time were quick to assist the industries.
There is no debt incurred to pay back bec luckily we had LKY to thank. The billions dispensed were Singapore savings thru the years bec LKY insisted that we must save for a raining day will come along and we will need it.
In a nutshell : SARS no govt support(in fast it was the other way around, the minister advising to cut cost quick).
Clovid-19 great support by the govt.
This is basically what it's all about.
