Blogger Boh Tong is an ex Raffles Institution student

Certain readers told me that I brought shame to my former school for becoming a steward. They said that I should be doing something more important. Do you agree or disagree with their statement? Please indicate in the above polls.

Hahaha, don't pretend ah...
U joined at the frame of time when u don't even remember what was being a GS to LS and then CS to IFS were all about and the next thing you know - ah, wow l am promoted to an instructor.
I am sure u will trade in your status of being an R.I boy to be a Steward, 10 times over.
This job was the creme de la creme of all jobs way back in the 19th seventies. It was even more so with the accelerated promotion thrown in.
So don't pretend ah.... Everybody drools with saliva to get into this job that could offer you the lifestyles of the rich and famous without you being so.
In the early days the rank of an IFS (IFM) or an instructor was like King and God..
For the IFS, at that time frame, all he needs to do was to carry an attache case (popular during those early days of flying) and go on board the plane, not to work but to relax until landing into the next country.
This IFS appointment was even better than the captain cause this person simply doesn't have to work at all if they chose not to.
If they want to work, then they just go down to the E/Y to terrorise the crew, hehe
So u think u brought R.I down by being a steward. I would even go for it if l am a graduate from NUS.
Haha, if only they knew what it was like during your time, everybody also want to be a steward lah.
Flying is a playful holiday job if u know how to go about it. One that enriches your life that no other job can offer. Period.
So don't bother carrying out the survey, cause the person who made the statement ain't know what life is all about. Lol...

BT, I think you should just ignore comments from immature readers.. and not drag our alma mater into a senseless debate where there is no judge..

We all strive to live a life with fulfilment, a life with no regrets, not a life doing earth-shaking important things.

For the naysayers leaving comments here, are your comments meant for current cabin crew, or wannabes? If you dislike the cc job so much, why are u following this blog? Or are u hijacking BT’s blog to vent out frustration in your life? Then may be u should have your own blog.

Peace,

The other RI boy

Hi Boh Tong

Reason being you had this poll because youre insecure and anxious about what people like me says about you for past sleepless nights of yours.

If youre so confident about your CC credentials like the 10 people who voted 'no shame' why you didnt get a post-CC job?

Where is the so called world class training applied post-CC to find job?

Why SQ cut benefits of current CC that drove many to quit less than
2 years?

Those 3/4 times who went for interview will get rude shock when they start their CC life.

Remember, its not only in SG SQ is recruiting. Its also other countries who probably after SG strong currency.

You've a wishful thinking.

I don't think its playful holiday job when you've roughly 1/2 night outstation in those countries and have to spend allowance to enjoy instead of saving in SG.

You be dead tired after serving passengers and tech crew when arrive in hotel only to realise you fell asleep and wake up knowing you've to get ready to go back to SG.

The one who brought shame to RI is a certain politician, who attended RI, who was said to be illiterate.

No need to run BT the blogger down.

Its a given that anyone who have had some authority in a previous job,
will find it difficult to take instructions or being supervised or worse, to
be appraised, in their next job.

Applies to CS rank and above.. the higher you are, it will be unpalatable to
take instructions.

So what type of activities will these people do to earn an income?

Blogging
Taxi or PHV driver
Landlord
Entrepreneur

These examples share 1 thing in common:

No one to report to except to self ( sometime to spouse.. )

This is a contradiction to the 'team' concept of being a crew.

The naysayers and those with adverse comments are:
1. Internet Trolls
2. Condemned ex-screw (could not get promoted, so very sore about it - l can see only same old 2 candidates in BT blog, with their signature comments.
3. Lastly, 1 with a grievance to grind and using BT blog to do it .

Working as cabin crew is tiring with the present structure of short layover.
Somehow though, it is still a fascinating and intriguing kind of job to live the jet-setting lifestyle of being a cabin crew.
Strange..... This is why you are still getting lots of applications to join the airlines.

It is not wishful thinking but it sure is a playful holiday job if u know how to enjoy it.
The work onboard sure is tiring, no doubt, but u will get over it if u are positive about it..
Crew only work from 90hrs - 110hrs (approximately) in a month. So u divide the hours by month and see how many hours in a month you get to relax to recharge.
Be forewarned: all crew will feel real shacked ( extreme tiredness), starting from the journey in the crew bus to the hotel and K.O. in the room, but hey, l can say the sleep will be the most wonderful and satisfying one you can ever enjoy and beyond imagination indeed.
You can only get this type of sleeping experience only by being a crew member.
The tiredness is extreme that u can laugh about it.
The compensation comes from many variables of being a crew, like enjoying nice hotels and great cities of the world, that span across 7 continents.
So you decide ya.

To many, being a crew in an airplane is unique and this
is the attraction. The uniqueness stems from a lack of
transparency from the airline industry in general, and the deliberate
creation of mystery and 'special-ness' .

A young passenger might be intrigued by the orchestrated arming
and disarming of the doors
or the different chimes that can be heard
or the amber, blue, red lights on the ceilings near each galley.

And other things like the words used when the crew are talking to each other.

Flying is not a human trait.
Some may have many mileage and are numbed,
while others fly infrequently and continue to be intrigued.

It is the next best transport beside flying on the spaceship Enterprise
with all the lights blinking, crisp uniforms and hairstyles.

These are some of the reasons people seek a job as a flight attendant.
No one ever thinks or imagine the 4am wake up call or a last minute
call to replace another crew.

Or to plan your annual leave 1 year ahead.
Or balloting for seats on a free ticket to New York.

Posters on this blog help to inform would-be applicants to be realistic
of their expectations.... the real world of being a crew.

Hi Anonymous, thanks for backing up my past assertions which BT and his minions try to denounce me and critics as jelly people.

As you said, its better to let wannabes know everything before they go for interview than they went for it and try and fail their probation period and the vicious cycle to hire new/old blood will continue because of the perceived glamour of being CC and the toxic CC environment.

Anonymous said...

The air pressurisation on the blood system affects the body by feeling totally tired, akin to running 200 metres race.Whether its beneficial or not,in the long run it affects juniors more, eye power and lip service supervisor suffers less.Plus they get their 2nd rest period which coincide with the body sleep cycle comes up better, and being overseas, aloof with the juniors due to pending checks/appraisal,causes the divide. The appraisal itself,on a variable subject, the (paxs)output of service and moving goal post can hardly be fair nor rateable.Biases, ingrained judgements conflicts beforehand makes the cc toxic.Recourse ?Hardly,a long shot to prove your case.Top down system means stay down or get out.Union ?Cant even defend the LS and the 8.Next case will be you and some minor indiscretion, when you are caught off guard, attrition by forgetting the Code of Conduct, choosing resignation before DI.Or a Court cases.Should have paid compensation rather be sack.Win,win.The future after cc seems to be limited, when one is captain of the kitchen, and pots and pans. They will probably ask one to upgrade to unending skillfuture etc.All other jobs seems to have square peg,to fit in round holes of jobs available. The only saving grace, the allowances top up the pay,so that one could prudently save.Benefits like free flight will be watered down with LC airlines,if they make a comeback .BT's blog give a snapshort, whether one can have a bird eyes or a myopic view.Of course Caveat Emptor.
