SIA a good employer?.....continues ...

 continue from https://www.bohtong.org/2021/11/sia-good-employer-well-it-depends-on.html

In certain divisions/departments, the heads used the SARS crisis as an excuse to get rid of under performed staff and those whom they had a grudge. Sure, there were divisional heads who were out to impress their bosses by cutting cost for the company.

Whatever reasons to rid their staff was short-sightedness because when SARS suddenly disappeared there was a shortage of staff. No heads or SVPs were penalized for the short-sightedness except for one. Many of my ex-colleagues pointed the finger at my SVP. He was fired but I personally believed he paid the price not due to the retrenchment of the crew but for insubordination.

And from the SARS episode, the "wonderful idea" of letting SATS find its own wings was conceived (sounds very similar to what is happening to SPH now eh?). Even back in the old days, JYP did rightfully mention SATS's important role as a supporting player for SIA.

Presently, SATS is back in the black (https://www.straitstimes.com/business/companies-markets/sats-swings-to-first-half-half-profit-of-132m-on-higher-cargo-volume-non) in contrast to its former parent which is still battling headwinds. In extraordinary times like this, SATS wouldve been helpful in making the financial numbers of SIA look better. Pop by some of the Cheers/Fairprice today and you can find SATS-marketed products under the "Europastry-Country Foods" label. Besides, SATS is running the SAF Cookhouses and manufacturing Combat Rations; not to mention that they have a few contracts with health and education institutions too.

Now with COVID, one sees the expansion of the Krisshop and Pelago ventures by SIA (and SATS has its similar "Ready To Travel" equivalent too) to generate shopper revenue. For all the talk about SIA to "focus on its core business" in the wake of SARS, SIA is now seeking new businesses just to stay afloat in the present Covid climate. SATS could have helped to do all these and more if it was still part of SIA- its value as a supporting player would really show in extraordinary times like this.

... just a historian reminiscing away...

If its subsidiary of SQ,the many staffs entitled to annual flight leave.Currently Sats have reduced entitlement. With bloated no,it seems not money generating, one of the factors Mana Boleh Airline went bust.Plus free ticket for Klepto P.M etc.

With regards to the annual flight leave, this argument cuts both ways. Personally, I see it from the angle that SATS has for many years been a key wingman for SIA, and their staff have donned the SIA attire when required as well. Besides, the SIA experience at Changi starts with the "SATS girl" at Check-in and Gate, before one finally gets to experience the "Singapore Girl" onboard. Thus, it is reasonable that the flight leave for SATS is their due reward for their contributions towards making SQ a great way to fly with service even other airlines talk about.

With so many LC air around, its cheaper to get confirm seating than rebated staff, till covid comes, all changed.

Fyi,I am ok with the annual flight foc and rebated tickets.LC air gives more location, fares than annual entitlement, subload etc,its their management pov that rule or ruin the so called entitlements. They use Sat as and when needed, like misstress and dumped when not required. So sad to see them stranded overseas on overbooking, and bring outranked by senior staffs ticket. However,Sats on its own now are immune to covid, and laugh their way to retrenchment etc,no need deep pocket to bail out.jmo.

Talking about the old cliche might not be app, great way not to die by stringent anti Covid measures proven and tested .more important.Once imported Covid into Sin,it cost money, life and many other factors to eliminate.Rationalising, strengthening procedures, selected port of call, and of course, test small fleet size safer and smarter option.

When you know only one employer, over 30 years, or even just 10 years, how
can anyone make meaningful comparisons..?

And its not that you can leave one employer, work for a new one and then
another and after 3-5 years return to the original or even previous one and
come to a conclusion.

Silly question
Silly dreaming

At any point in time, the status quo of the manager and their decisions was relevant. The HR dept ultimately select their candidates.Their performance and the iron bowl syndrom depends ultimately on how deep pocket it is,and ultimately taxpayer, its has its limit. When the body hit the floor, the height, speed and cushioning depend on the wishes, prayers and karma of many.Soft landing or not is left to be seen, endemic will be part of our life and omicron works best in aircraft environment.Silly ?Dreaming? Its a fair question, can we handle the truth ?
