A comment worth reading by a reader (part 1)?

Timeline in SQ as cabin crew:

Year 1 - completed probation, flying to exciting cities!
Year 2 - Renew SEP, Performance review, meet new friends, life is good!make plans!!
Year 3 - Commit to loans either car, home or business and renew SEP
Year 4 - Performance review.. renew SEP... life is even better..buy a dog
Year 5 - Here is when things gets spicy...

In Year 5, During performance review.. you hear :

"Your contract is up for renewal. However your performance is 0.002% lower than the average. There was 1 complaint received on one of your flight.Your hair colour appears too light. You are aware of the grooming standards. Do you have anything to say?"

No renewal means loans and monetary commitments are in jeopardy.
Feel the stress yet?

No?

Wait... more to come...

Actually, such a scenario is quite common in several other professions. Nowadays, many are engaged on a contractual basis, such as university lecturers, IT Managers, etc. But, unfortunately, cabin crews might be disadvantaged because their skills and experience would not be so marketable in non-airline sectors. What OP said is true but one cannot blame them for enjoying the perks of life while all seems well. Afterall, nobody can predict the future. A good example are the Pilots. Prior to Covid-19, some were enjoying high life until they found themselves in an awkward situation during the pandemic. Moral of the story is to plan wisely and save for rainy days

Hi Boh Tong

Is the anonymous write up is accurate depiction of CC life?

Is the anonymous write up is accurate depiction of CC life?

Reply: to a certain extent it's true but majority do not have to
lead this type of life like over commitment to buying etc etc.
Also most do not have issue pertaining to work performance
and can get their contract renewed without any problem.
Imo, about 10% of the cc went through what the above anonymous
stated.

All will be perfect until one met Sexcy Ahquaman, then things were derailed.Past sagas include the Case of Eight, etc.Top down approach means juniors concern were not look, but sacrifice on the high altar of annual pax surveys. The nazi appratick inside goose-step over what's right left.Unions ?Wearing rose tinted glasses, busy pursuing self interest furthering self, instead of investigating cases of extreme bullying.Mind you it's a moving goal post,of ego full paxs ,slight complain, taken as gospel truth, weather lying twisting tongues of pax, awaiting their chocolate rewards etc.It is narrow tightrope walkers indeed for cc who were not carefull, not or not good nor quick in response in ripost and response. Then weak or wrong response,in the cause of fatigues, jet lagging, pax to crew ratio always causes extreme short handed turnaround flgt include Mas,HKG means physical limits of crews .Some survive, but live to provide materials now ,in these age of mediacracy,cc got a more than fair chance of exposing Nazis practices, and just like the transferee from sister airline case.Covid is a crossroad where practicality ,service to paxs and reality clash like shootout in Ok Corral, who is the baddie ,Lone Sherrif against vicious gunman, will he return to his true love with Goodness, God on his side ?The readers await.

Thanks BT for the prompt reply

What happens if CC have a valid complaint and SQ choose not to renew contract, what do CC do?

Also, if CC max rank is green and not qualified for chief rank after 25 years of service, what happen to them?

BT's secretary said...

Aiyo ask BT so many questions. He is a busy man and so I will reply instead.
1) Appeal but if failed ask union for help (must be union member first)

2) Green = Lss = 6 contracts x 5 years per contract - 30 years. If not promoted by end of 30 years of service, coy will ask Lss to leave and with a small gratuity.

Better to ask and kaypoh then become a CC without brain and realise its not what it seems and quit and deprived other wannabes who really want. Stupiak.

Every question is a legitimate queries, could change with the time, etc covid allows resign and come back again, duo employee and long leave of absence, never in SQ history.End of covid means new thinking of flexible employment, win win for all. Also new media means all is black and white sooner or later expose weakness or strength.

So, on your 5th year, you decided, enough lah.. and you resign...
This is the compensation for your youth, time and exclusive employment
with the company.

Flight Stewards/Stewardesses
(i) Completion of first 5-year contract - $10,000
(ii) Completion of second 5-year contract - $25,000
(iii) Completion of third 5-year contract - $2,500

Assuming you began employment at 20 years old,
you would be 25 years old.

What have you acquired that you can write, say about you work
as a flight attendant?

Some things:

1. Say sorry
2. Say Good morning, evening, afternoon.
3. Shout.. "Unfasten sealbelt! ... come this way!"
4. Smile ( sincerely)
5. Bun your hair in French, Chinese, Japanese style
6. Paint your nails really well.
7. Know where Gucci, LV, Prada, shops are in each city.

and perhaps much more... ( but not quiet useful to other employers )

Meanwhile, your college friends joined Siemens, Google, Marina Bay Sands Hotels,
Amazon, LTA, NParks, etc..

What would they have acquired that is different from a flight attendant?

Some things:

1. Ledgers & propriety softwares
2. Booking platforms & logistics softwares
3. Cloud computing
4. Social media management
5. Events management
6. Business challenges
7. Networking with like minded people in different industries

Of course, there are people who might not want that type of working
environment or pressure, and will get accustomed to a life of checking in and out
of hotels, and wait for rosters to be published... with apprehension about how many
Indian flights, Manila flights, or turnarounds.. and wonder if they can attend their mothers birthdays...anniversaries.. spend time with their pets that require attention..etc..

Leaving after 5 years, you might have time to relearn or update skills that are required
to earn a living. Leaving after 10years is going to set you back plenty. There will always be the exceptional few. But by and large.. plan your path... during your moments of quietness in your hotel room, contemplate, evaluate, calculate... because the company
is not your friend, but a business. It will decide based on their business needs.

Currently SQ is in debt and will be for some time ( 5 years or more ) Ignore all the reports about how well they are doing and ignore all your flights being full. They will not miss you one second if you should ever leave them.

Flights will still take off, the service will still be completed, and the company will still receive praise.

Hi BT

This is what I call true accuracy than your posts painting rosy scenario of being CC. Kudos to the OP for blunt explanation.
