A cc wannabe asked this question....

 Hi BT

Im looking to join as a SQ Steward. I'm wondering if SQ provides holiday allowances on top of the existing allowances,

For example, if CC layover in NYC, which is once in blue moon roster, do we get additional allowance for us to enjoy the stay apart from Crew hotel? Because back in SG, we need money to live and pay bills.

In NYC, we don't want to stay in hotel just to save money. We want to go out and enjoy after handling passengers.

Is this possible?

Hi
Guess u have gotten yr answer from different channels, some with hard landings. Whether it's harsh or subtle, there r still Infos to be absorbed from the comments with the right perspective. Well, learning curve, learn to rationalize before any statement is made. Try to think about what n how u can contribute first before wishing for how u want to be remunerated.
Anyway, if yr question is a genuine query then hope it helps.
If it's just a wish list, good luck.

I agree with the post. Ive SQ friends and they say cost of living is rising in SG, it doesn't help if they cant enjoy their outstation especially those with monetary commitment i.e own family or ageing parents.

Can you discuss with SIASU? It can help to retain crew in the long run if employee benefits sufficient.

I believe this is what he meant:-

If you happened to have a bad day and had to do a NY flight, you can’t even enjoy a good lunch after an 18-hour non-stop flight. There’s also the jet lag to suffer from but the IFM probably sleeping soundly because of his rank/position.

The route (from airport) to the hotel is one where you have to go through Manhatten Tunnel and, on arrival at the hotel, do a group check-in and go to a room which is old by any standard.

Out for dinner and preference is for Chinese food or curry chicken from Egyptian couple stallholder. En route can meet all kind of characters like drunkards, drug addicts. On certain nights, one can even hear gunshots because someone got shot/killed. In any event, mugging are quite common, especially at the Bronx or Time Square.

Time Square is where one can see fantastic neon lights and traffic is so congested that no driver comply with traffic regulations. A motorist can get shot for simply blasting a horn at another motorist. Be careful, even when using pedestrian crossings. Good memories of Empire State Builing or Twin Towers, which was blasted by terrorists (Google for further details)

Sounds challenging.Life is made up of choices.
There r 3 choices at hand.
- resign if u re a crew
- Do not dun join if r not one yet.
- work from home coz nowadays everywhere can be dangerous.
A bonus choice will be...
Start yr own airline.
That will stop yr wellbeing from being terrorized.
ALL the best .

From Boh Tong:

Frankly who am I to discuss with SIASU? I have already retired long ago and most in SIASU don't me or if they do they don't care two hoots about me.

A flight attendant's income is good for just one person.
A couple who are also flight attendants, is also good.
But...

- must not have kids
- must not have old folks to look after or support.

Then, life is a bed of roses.
The rosy life will last till retirement or
with serious illness that prevents flying.

A flight attendant's employment has limits, as long as the contract agreed upon.
Think carefully and plan.

With other types of employment, you will learn many useful & money earning skills.
A flight attendant's job is fun, and you will learn useful skills, however, these skills
will be limited to the company's requirement and not useful in earning money outside of the company.

If you can make friends with retired or ex flying people, speak to them and listen to their stories... after an hour or less, you will discover that 99% have nothing useful that can be used to earn money. Nothing.

Hi BT,

Thanks for replying.

But, youve served the company for more than 35 years both as steward and CCE and made media
appearance both on TV and print media.

Surely, they cant forget about you.

It's a fact,Unions or unionist lack integrity and self serving.Short memories, only of those used and usefull, the members should reflect on their character,in other word fair weather kind of friends or equivalent when it starts raining ,they would not lent one their umbrella, thus you are soaking wet.

People who stay beyond 20 years with any employer have debts to pay.
It is a big wayang to claim that the job is great, the job is fun, the people are nice. etc..
It can be true but most of all its about money.

And usually, the pay is above average of what they could earn based on their qualifications.
In the 70s, 80s.. its just a Higher School Certificate or GCE A levels.

Flying in those days allowed you to leave home... away from housework... away from crying babies and you get to stay 1 or 2 nights in many cities.. and collect allowances.

This is not the case anymore.
Flying is very much mundane and the stays overseas is as minimal as the law allows.

These days, one will have to change employers every 5 years or less... otherwise, you will be redundant.

Yes, in those days, when the B747 were used for long-haul flights, the whole trip would take a week or so. Depart SIN, layover in Dubai, arrive LHR, 2 days stay and depart LHR on 3rd day. Layover at Dubai on return trip also. Even for mid-haul flights, stayover was also longer, for example, New Delhi where even a side trip to Taj Mahal was possible. For short-haul, remembered that there was a one-night layover at Bangkok (last flight there on A318) and return next day afternoon on a B747. Those were the days. These days, flights to LHR are non-stop and, before you can recover from jetlag and fatigue, you are on your way home, also non-stop.

Gone are the good old days where you can have a slower pace. Now before you can recover from your jet lag, its time to come back and you can't go too far out.

Bangkok now is a turnaround?

Anonymous said...

Male and Taipei already turnaround.

Anonymous said...

I still see CC enjoy Kurumba at Male?

Boh Tong - bangkok is turnaround uh? No more layover?

Anonymous said...

MLE,TPE and BKK are all turnaround flights now! Yet there are now 3 to 4x the number of people trying to be cc with SIA as compared to pre-covid days.

Timeline in SQ as cabin crew:

Year 1 - completed probation, flying to exciting cities!
Year 2 - Renew SEP, Performance review, meet new friends, life is good!make plans!!
Year 3 - Commit to loans either car, home or business and renew SEP
Year 4 - Performance review.. renew SEP... life is even better..buy a dog
Year 5 - Here is when things gets spicy...

In Year 5, During performance review.. you hear :

"Your contract is up for renewal. However your performance is 0.002% lower than the average. There was 1 complaint received on one of your flight.Your hair colour appears too light. You are aware of the grooming standards. Do you have anything to say?"

No renewal means loans and monetary commitments are in jeopardy.
Feel the stress yet?

No?

Wait... more to come...

Then why I still see CC take pictures in Kurumba Male?
